Shaping Frets After Bindng

I am fretting a guitar after the binding is put on.

Is it better to shape the fret before fretting or file it after I have fretted the guitar?

im confused, you mean trim the edges and the crowns before gluing it to the fretboard?

if thats the case, then no.

attach it first. what if you do it and its alittle off?

I guess you could do it first, but After reading, and watching builds, I've never seen it.

I'll try to be more specific.

I have binidng on the guitar already.

I have the fret tangs cut to allow for the the binding.

The only thing is the correct width of the fret and the shape of the edge of the fret.

Should I hammer the fret into the fingerboard and THEN shape the end or do the shaping first, then hammer it in?

The fret end is going on top of the binding.

Fret then shape, you could use a sharpening stone, file or sand paper and block to shape a side at a time with a few sweeps.

The jobs I have seen always have the binding square and untouched, as if the fret was shaped beforehand.

Just careful work I suppose.

Install, then sand/file is the norm. it "can" be done before install, I know someone who has, but just saying it, paints a bad picture in my mind... I wouldnt to it.

My friend had to because the fretboard was custom airbrushed without frets installed, and coulnt risk damaging the paint.
