I'm finishing my sons spruce tele with some water based Minwax. Kind of applying it then wiping it off to accent the grain. Many people tell me this should be sealed with some form of clear coat because it will wipe off when the guitar is rubbed against things, sweat on against skin etc. I don't want any shine on it at all. Here's a pic of a test piece...any ideas if this would be true?

Or maybe leave it with no stain and some non-shiny clear coat stuff?

Have you considered a Pure Tung Oil or True Oil finish. Very organic and will provide a mat finish.

ithink something like spruce should get a film finish or you might be angry with all the dents you get from rocking out!

and if your gonna colour it; spruce has deep grain, make a glaze and do some cool effects with 2 colours!

Avoid pure oils; not great finishes for acoustics. Go with a polymerizing oil/oil blend/oil varnish, like TruOil, Miniwax oil finish, Liberon finishing oil, or Danish oil.

Spruce can be a bit of a pain to stain evenly...
