cukaracha
how long should a truss rod be, in general? also, why is the middle of the truss rod channel routed deeper than the ends?
Bainzy
Length depends on how long the neck is. The middle is routed deeper because on a truss rod of the one-way design, the truss rod mechanism works by adding backbow when it's tightened. It does this because when you tighten it, you're stretching it, and just like when you stretch a piece of string, it straightens. If its in a curved channel, straightening the truss rod means that the rod adds backbow to the neck due to the way it pushes against the inside of the channel. cukaracha
how long should the truss rod be for a 25 1/2" neck scale neck with 22 frets?
Xanthus
17-18" is normal. Most places that sell truss rods have them labeled "bass" "guitar" "acoustic" and so on.
DC Ross
How about a long-scale electric, like 27-28" scale?
Xanthus
See above. Your 28" scale guitar is still only going to have a 21 inch fretboard. Bass trusses start at around 24" so unless you want to cut your own, you should still use a regular guitar length rod, and reinforce with carbon fiber. Prostheta
I went for the middle ground as i'm building a 30" scale instrument, so I got a couple of rods made up at LMI halfway between guitar and bass length.
Xanthus
Good idea, Prostheta, what're you building, a shortscale bass?
Prostheta
A longscale eight-string guitar! Given that the lowest registers are in bass regions, I thought i'd design it to have better tone in those positions.
