slowlearner Posted June 22, 2007 Report Share Posted June 22, 2007 Alright, i'm new... really really new, i'm sixteen and i'm an aspiring luthier... it's all i've ever wanted to do, now that i'm older and coming into some money i'm ready to start building, but i CAN'T find any tutorials or anything on neck through construction, and i want to make sure i'm doing this right, so please, if anyone could give me a hand i would be SOOOOO happy, oh yeah, and could someone explain to me what intonation is and how to adjust/check it? i helped a friend of mine fix a gibson SG about a week ago (he messed the bridge up BAD) and it's off... but i don't know how to fix it... or know once it's fixed, so yeah, any help on either topic would be great, and once i start building this explorer i want so bad, i'll take some pictures and keep you posted Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I also want to build a neck-thru explorer eventually. Melvyn Hiscock's book is the standard on the industry. It has a vast amount of info on neck-thru's too. If you have money you should get it. I did a neckthrough Explorer for my first build, here's the link to pics: http://public.fotki.com/xanthus/ With this specific build, I can help you with whatever questions you have, once you start. But first, I'd definitely do ALL the reading I could do on every conceivable subject, as well as check out the tutorials on the main website (too few neckthrough tutorials, in my opinion ). Intonation is on the main site, too, under how to set up an electric guitar. Lemme know if you have any neckthrough Explorer questions, if you start building. Here's a tip: for a first-time builder, buying a premade neck saves an infinite amount of hassle. slowlearner Posted July 3, 2007 Author Report Share Posted July 3, 2007 thanks so much for the help, i'd have gotten back to you sooner but i've been house-sitting. i looked at the pics of your explorer, that's really cool, i'm thinking with mine i'll go slightly more like a gibson look.. but different enough to be my own =] and as for buying a premade neck, i don't think i'll do that because i acutally just had a job-shadow a few days ago with a guy in my area that makes basses and that's what we did when i was there.. it's hard on the forearms but he explained the difference in a c shape and a u shape neck and how to make either one, besides, this will all be in my free time so i plan on taking care and doing things right so i should be okay. once again, thank you for your help, i'll be sure to keep you posted my e-mail is lespaulkrank@aol.com if you want to send me yours.. it's easier that way, i suck at the whole forum thing lol, later -aaron- I'd recommend Hiscock's book too, though I've never read it myself, I haven't heard any bad reviews. Xanthus Posted July 5, 2007 Report Share Posted July 5, 2007 Well, here's to building a neck on your own! *cheers* I ordered my second fretboard ( ) from stewmac, and as soon as it gets here, I can start building again. I messed the fretboard on my first attempt pretty badly, but I think that I'll get a small paint roller and roll it in Titebond, then run it up and down the neck. It'll get just the right amount of glue on the neck, methinks. I believe I've seen it done at the Gibson factory, there's a YouTube video on it. I have the old fretboard steamed and clamped to the bench right now, if it's salvageable I might throw it on the spare neck blank I have. Next time, I'm just ordering from Doeringer I'll throw the board on and fret it myself, but it'll save a ton of hassle in the long run, methinks.
