I've never done a swirl finish on a guitar but I'm curious as to what protects the wood when you dip it in the water and oil paint, you'd think the water does something to the wood, but what prevents any damage being done from the water?

The base coat protects most of the surfaces, while you use wax to fill any bare wood, such as the bridge ferrule holes and the holes drilled between the pickups.
