djhollowman
Man, I love it....LOVE IT!!!! There's nothing I don't love about this one! I will undoubtedly be making something very very similar soon. Will you be going with the clear pickguard too? Hopefully we will also see gloriously gaudily-coloured pickups and knobs etc????? DJ EDIT: "also made the pickguard" ~ I really should learn to read!
Prostheta
Where are you getting the 2k from, Andy? I could do with something nice and durable as a clear over the black for my Dark Sabre project....
andyt
Off ebay, did a chromeboy copy & used stuff from specialistpaints.com 2k clear in a can just like the Alsa stuff. Dry in an hour cured in a day. Did a search on the bay earlier & found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2K-AEROSOL-SPRAY-CAN...A1%7C240%3A1318 Going to try a few cans, its got the bit you stick in the base to mix the clear & hardner. Not cheap but I spend the same in halfords clear & use twice as many cans - and have to wait a month
djhollowman
Hmm, that's interesting - never seen that stuff afore! I'm lucky - I have a mate who runs a body shop, and he'll clear coat anything for me. He does it whilst spraying a door/bonnet/whatever and reckons that it uses so little for my needs that it's basically just overspray and would have been wasted anyway! Then he gives it a polish with the big slow-running mop-thingy and it looks awesome! I always offer to pay, and sometimes he'll accept a little cash, but other times he doesn't think it's worth charging for. DJ BTW - Andy, can I have this guitar when it's done............please? Notice how I ask nicely..........rather than hint that I'll steal it........???
Prostheta
I'm game for that. Any ideas whether it might add a slight tinge to the underlying colour? I'd hate for my gold on black guitar to have a golden black clearcoat!! Also, great to see that us imperialist islanders are all trying to steal each others guitars still. Not that i'm 100% innocent of that myself.

djhollowman
Andy, is this stuff the paint you used? It's pretty expensive at almost £27 a pint! A three-colour swirl plus the reducer is gonna come to about £100! At least I might have enough for a couple of goes at it!! DJ

DJ yep that the stuff, the 3 previous swirls I'd done with plasticote pots - about 3 quid each, but I had never seen any fluoescent enamels before, plus no pro swirler will ever tell you what paints they use. So when I stumbled on them on ebay, I googled 1shot and came up with the link above. You are right about the amount of paint, but for a 100 quid it should last for the next 300 guitars. reamer
I would think you could use these as well...not sure how the price is in comparison with what you are talking... 1 Shot Enamel Another question Andy...my Fret board seems to be the width of a 7 string??? Did you have to trim down your fret board? I got mine from the same guy that you did. Maybe I didn't pay attention to what I was getting. reamer
Here is a swirl a local guy did for me. I'll be doing the clearcoat with House of Kolor...don't want to hijack your post, figured you would appreciate a nice swirl! It was an old RG550 I had sanded many years ago and left as natural. Since he is local, I am looking to be the guy who does clear coating for him. So he did my guitar so I can see what to anticipate with how the swirls are! Great deal for me! Get a swirled guitar - and hopefully some business! Win Win situation! He also cut the monkey grip and lions claw for me. The pickguard will cover a bit since it is black, but I still think it will go nicely. The extra cavity in the back is for the 9V that powers my EMGS I put in it. This thing screams! The old natural finish didn't do it justice. Now the paint matches the sound - INSANE! But my question - Now that it's painted like a Vai guitar - will I be able to play like him???? andyt
I would think you could use these as well...not sure how the price is in comparison with what you are talking... 1 Shot Enamel thats the same stuff, don't know if they are pint pots for 12 bucks, but it is US paint so bound to be cheaper, when i first saw them on ebay they were about half the uk price, but the shipping cost put it near the uk cost. Another question Andy...my Fret board seems to be the width of a 7 string??? Did you have to trim down your fret board? I got mine from the same guy that you did. Maybe I didn't pay attention to what I was getting. Yep, fretboard a wide enough for a seven, although the inlays are sometimes not centered, so make yourself a center line on the top of the pyramid & trim the rest. Usually has extra top & bottom for a floyd shelf, or 3 extra frets if you want. Looks like a Nate Perle job? I prob would have bought one in the past but the ridges on the claw were always rough & he never cut the back of the grip either. looks good, get building it. reamer
You are correct! It is from Nate! I am lucky that I literally live about 5 minutes from him. I happend to see his stuff on eBay, and then saw what city he was from. I thought hey, I need to get in touch with this guy. And here I am! I saw it before it was swirled, and after he cut the stuff, but didn't look at it close - so I couldn't tell ya. And I have not seen it in person yet since the swirl. I will be getting it Friday. Good to know about the fretboard - thanks for the tip! I had figured I would center based off the inlays for the reason you described. Can't wait to see yours completed! djhollowman
Yeah, I've seen Perle's stuff on eBay as well. He seems to be doing alright with it - the DNA swirl I was watching recently went pretty quick! Reamer - get a clear pickguard, you know it makes sense!!! EMG's in a Jem?? I looooove EMG's, but they just don't sit well with the whole Jem karma - DiMarzio's baby!! Yeah Andy, the monkey grip should have a little flat area on the back. My Chibanez didn't have that either - it does now! That body also looks awesome! Man, I'm so inspired to make a swirlie now!! Tell me though - is the black in that swirl the primer showing through, or is it black paint actually in the swirl? (Actually, same question above goes to both Reamer and Andy!) ae3
Nice work andy, your swirl is very close to the original. And I like the colours in yours Reamer. I have the plans and the G.A.S for a swirled Jem right now, looks like I've found my next project....

DJ Clear just wouldn't look right since it's a front route. I'm not trying to make it a Jem - I already have one. I just really like the looks of the grip and claw. And the swirl too I guess! And the EMG's are just soooo sensative... Like I said, I have a Jem - so this is my own creation with a little of everything I like. I do wish I had it done on a rear route so I could use a clear pickguard. The black one I have will cover up some of the swirl. I have it sitting on it now, and it does still look cool! I might have to paint the EMG's, or have them swirled or something...might be TOO much black inthat area.
ae3
Get regular pup's and buy one of those black press on covers, then swirl the cover thing. But if you have the EMG's already... I'm not sure if the outside black bit is water proof

I'm not sure if the outside black bit is water proof Aesthetically that would work quite well I reckon, but it wouldn't sound like an EMG. Swirling an EMG should be OK as long as you dip it with the back facing upwards and don't fully submerge it. If you dipped it face down, going in deep enough so you almost reach the mounting tabs then whatever bit isn't painted shouldn't be visible past the pscratchplate once it's installed anyway. Not that i'm 100% innocent of that myself. Sprayed it yesterday, dry in an hour or so, (was quite cool yesterday) crystal clear, cured overnight, I love this 2k stuff. The can had good flow, great spray fan - recomended. I'm going to use this all the time in the future, I can stand the month cure time from my previous clear. Only used one can at £13, so the other one is going to go on reswirling my GMC copy. Going to level & polish, then put it together next week. One question, I know nothing about wiring and was going to make some clear cavity covers because I've got a massive 4'x6' sheet left over from making the pickguard. What happens with shielding if I want clear covers & unshielded cavitys to show the swirl?
Prostheta
Simple - you'll have no shielding. If the cavities aren't lined, then having a cavity cover with no shielding won't make much difference.

(can you tell I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about ) if I'm wired up correctly do i need shielding or will it hum like crazy?
djhollowman
Hmm...betcha wish now you'd painted the cavity with shielding paint before swirling?? I find shielded cavities do make quite a difference - in the room where I play most in my house is also where my pc is etc etc so I'm never far away from potential sources of hum!
