Adding A New Tremelo/tailpiece To A Epiphone Firebird?

Recommended Posts

Hi I recently bought an Epiphone firebird, and so far the guitar has been great to me. She stays in tune and plays like a beast but my only problem is that is does not have a tremelo/tailpiece with it standard.

Is there any sort of Bigsby or other tremelo system or tailpiece that I can buy? The only one that I can find are vintage parts on E-bay for alot of money.

Finished product hopefully?

If the TOM bridge is of standard height you can add a Bigsby B5 (IIRC) without much problems. You will have the issues of visible holes but if you can live with that it should really be no problem.

Sure could, although I'd place the trem unit a fair bit closer to the bridge - in my experience having the bridge that far back reduces the break angle of the strings enough that you tend to get ringing from behind the bridge.

Plus, how are you supposed to use the trem while playing when it's that far back?

I haven't used that unit, but it doesn't LOOK like it'd be that great. Clearly it's a vibrato, not a tremolo. If you're looking for a vibrato, you really don't need to look any further than Bigsby. Sweed had it right that it's a B5, and Pierce & anderekel are right that you'd want it MUCH closer to the bridge.

As for the visible holes, you could (and should) plug them. With the unit closer to the bridge, you'd want to place it directly over the holes so they'd be almost completely covered.
