Southpa Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 LOL, I'm bound and determined to make this EKO look nice so I decided to strip it down again and start over with a few lessons learned. No problem on the staining front but I applied the clear poly a bit too heavily. Instead of spraying I opted to lay it down with one of those foam applicators. It might work well for a flat top but things tend to slide around and drip on the curved archtops. Anyway, I was sanding these "anomalies" down and accidentally touched into my stainjob in a few spots, ouch! So everything is coming off, right down to bare wood again. Then I'll restain and try an automotive clear laquer instead. Its darn good practice anyway! How many botched finishes have you had and how did you deal with them? Quote
bluespresence Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 How many botched finishes have you had and how did you deal with them? Me? I never mess up! I crackled the guitar in my tutorial 3 times before I got it right.... I stop, have a smoke, contemplate how p.o.'d I am, and if I'm still in good spirits I go back at it and try again. If not I find a distraction for an hour or two then try again. I get less upset the older I get. if I was doing this when I was 20 I would have had a lot of flying guitars! Quote
Drak Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 How many botched finishes have you had ...and how did you deal with them? Pt 1.) You don't seriously expect me to quote a number, do you? I would be soooooooo embarrassed! Dozens. Seriously. Pt. 2) I don't get mad anymore. I tried my best to learn the lesson that caused the failure and not do it again. Man are there a LOT of lessons to learn! Quote
mdw3332 Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 One of the very first projects was a mahogany body. I didn't knew squat and screwed it up, stripped it and did it over about 5 times. Finally got it done with a beautiful lacquer.....and dropped it. I think that it is just part of the process - gotta sacrafice a couple before you get it right. Quote
www Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Had to sand back to wood 3 times my first try at finishing, and 2 on my last one. I am going to start on my third soon and finishing still is the one part that I'm nervous about. But, I am getting better! Quote
