sbskates Posted November 27, 2014 Report Posted November 27, 2014 Bought some curly maple 3/4 inch for a top that had to be carved on edges. Never had this happen but the curl is still in the center but it weakens out then appears in the carve edge again. will some sanding on the top get back down into the figure? Anyone ever had this happen? Quote
ScottR Posted November 27, 2014 Report Posted November 27, 2014 I have certainly seen that before, but it is not something that happened after you bought and worked the wood, it was already like that. It is common enough to find figured maple that has strong figure then weak figure then strong again, hence the A to AAAAA grading system. I think it is common for the figure to be strongest near the perimeter of the logs and weaker near the heart. What figure you do have will look stronger the more you sand it smooth and strongest after the application of a clear.....oil bringing it out the best. SR Quote
sbskates Posted November 27, 2014 Author Report Posted November 27, 2014 Thanks for the input. Yes I will do the old dye black and sand back then do my red dye to really draw it out. Quote
