Telecaster Project- Guitar Scale Help!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I hope everyone is doing well during this crazy time.
Need some help:
I bought a neck for a telecaster project.
The guitar scale length should be 25.5"- and in fact, from the nut of the guitar to the 12th fret, we have 12.75".
HOWEVER, from that 12th fret to bridge (where the string lies on the saddle), I consistently measure 13.75". Somehow there is an extra inch somewhere!
I tried measuring in a million different ways. From NUT to BRIDGE i get 26.5". This is a 6th string guitar neck.
I have the EXACT same telecaster body with a fender tele neck and I measure 25.5" without any issues.
I KNOW that my bridge is in the right position.
When i looked at the NEW neck and compared it to my old tele, i noticed that it looked longer (both necks are sitting snug in their respective pockets). It seems as if the explanation is that the nut is a full inch higher than on my tele neck. The bases are at the exact same level when noticing this.
Going crazy here- does this happen? Am I crazy? Will this affect playing?
Please advise and thank you!!!

This image tells where the issue lies: The problematic neck has 24 frets and the body has been routed for 21 like the other one.

Cutting the heel shorter would is no option since there would not be enough meat for the neck bolts. As the neck is tapered the shortened heel would also be loose on the sides.

There's not much you can do other than get a shorter neck or build another body as I understood you've made it yourself. Filling two pickup holes doesn't seem like a viable option.

Route the pocket deeper?

Did you look at the photos? That would occupy 2/3 of the neck pickup cavity and leave wide gaps on the sides of the neck.

Oh no, I confess I passed right over the links. Well, if there is a pick guard, you could take a little off the end of the neck, a little off the end of the overhang, push the neck pup back a little, move the bridge up a little. You may be able to take up the slack with some careful measuring and balancing. Maybe.

To clarify, as the links don't open just by clicking, either the neck pocket has to be made one inch deeper or the bridge has to be taken one inch closer. In the former case the bridge pickup would be lost and some serious filling would be required to ensure a good contact to transfer the vibrations between the neck and the body.

Moving the bridge would be an option as the middle pickup can be sacrificed and the cavity hidden under a scratchplate.

If the body were of some utterly expensive and stunning piece of wood, routing a cavity the width of the bridge plate all through the pickup and neck cavities and filling it with a contrasting block, then rerouting the cavities after moving the bridge would be a viable option to make it a feature.
