moztech Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 I'm new at guitar construction and woodworking and am confused at what is meant by Mahogany. My local (South African) Wood supplier has three types African, Brazilian and Sapele all with different properties. I like the tones of Gibson SG's which Mahogany would that be, or any other timber recommendations. thanks Quote
rob Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 I got some utily mahogany, this probaly is not as good to use as brazilian, because it is soo much harder. I believe that gibson uses honduras mahogany in their guitars now but they used to brazilian. Welcome! Quote

Page_Master Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 i got some utile mahogany [aka sipo mahogany] as well. i can get brazilian mahogany except it cost about $120 per 50x125xmeter - crown cut when the utile cost about $30 per meter plus it is 1/4 cut. utile is from africa and it has the same genus as sapele, so it shouldn't sound to bad. tonebucket Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 African, south american will be fine as gibson use these for their stanard production models. Quote
