Simo
I brought this off ebay a few weeks back and today it finally came It's not a Jackson but the seller said it was an exact custom copy, if this was made by a pro luthier, by another manufacturer or if it was made in someone's shed I don't really care, it's well built I was told it was Black Walnut?, I have no knowledge of wood so if someone could corfirm this for me please? I'll post some better pic's when I've stripped the shitty black paint off
Simo
Here's a better shot of the back...
spirit
Thats some pretty wood!! Damn shame about that black paint on the front though............ Maybe you could strip the paint off??
urbansmurf
does it have a bunch of really small pores on it, like mahogony?
Daniel
That looks damn nice! I think you should sand down the front, but its your choice. Can't wait to see it all finished!
skibum5545
Yep, looks like black walnut. Fairly straight grained, only slightly open pores, quite hard? Since the grain on the back is so nice, try to strip/sand the front with as little damage to the wood as possible. It has great potential to be absolutely amazing. Drak
Yeah baby, you go! Another Walnut shark!
Simo
I've stripped most of the paint off this afternoon, took quite a while. I used some paint stripper and a stanley blade and gave it a very quick sand with an electric sander. I still need to strip the bridge and pickup cacities a lot more. More pic's coming shorty
Simo
Still loads of sanding to do in the bridge cavity and there's some white primer in the grain, but at least the worse bit is done...
skibum5545
WOOOOWWWW... nice.... I love walnut, and that is funky and classy and extreme and understated and... IT BOGGLES MY MIND!! Keep it up!
asm
please tell me your not gonna paint over or stain that awesome wood!? please?
Simo
don't worry I think I'm going with the natural look, what method would you guy's recomend? I haven't got a clue on how to do it, but I'm sure I'll have fun trying
skibum5545
Because of the wild shape on this, I would go with a clear gloss lacquer or poly. If you want to go with oil, that's nice too, but the shape IMHO warrants a good shine to it.
Simo
I kinda liked the idea of oil because it seems like an easier option to do myself, am I right in thinking you can use wax after it's been oiled?
spirit
WOW!! Nice wood!! Dunno about the wax though.....
skibum5545
What I used on the black walnut bass I'm building is that Warwick Surface Finisher, which you can get off MusiciansFriend. The only problem is that it is sensitive to moisture, so if your hands are at all wet, the finish gets kinda cloudy. You have to apply another coat to make it go away. According to the Warwick guys, a light coat of tung oil at the end will solve this, but I have yet to try that. $.
darren wilson
I have a guitar with a tung-oil finished black walnut body and it's awesome. It feels like buttah!
goth_fiend
hey man, you think you could trace that entire body and send it to me? im starting a neckthru V and the cad file i have isnt the right dimensions.
Simo
Sorry but I don't have a scanner I've done loads more sanding today, I'm going to make a new rear control cover out of a sheet of alloy tomorrow to replace the shitty plastic one it came with. I'll post some more pic's in the 'In Progress..' forum very soon
goth_fiend
what type of alloy? on all of my guitars i have used a piece of diamond plate for all the cavity covers.
Simo
I'm just using an off-cut of 3 or 4mm flat alloy, I've used diamond plate before but seeing as the cover is on the back of the guitar the pattern will stick out further than the body itself. I might get it anodised gold to match the rest of the hardware.
Simo
Here's the plate, t still needs polishing properly but it's a nice snug fit
