tomdonna
Are caps a necessity on tone and volume controls?
truerussian558
wrong forum dude, the electronics one will give you more hits. they rarely come into this forum, the electronics forum btw is on the main forum page, and like 3 below the solidbody guitar/bass chat
GregP
I'm a bit useless, but I could have sworn a potentiometer with a properly-valued cap WAS a tone control, and one without is automatically a volume control...??
jefm
Well a volume control is a voltage divider....the tone is a variable resistor... yeah almost the same thing but the voltage divider is like 2 resistors with a tap in the middle....and the other is a resistor you can change the value on the capacitor is the meat of the tone control....the volume doesn't need one though
Biohazard
Capacitors are necessary on tone pots because they keep the treble tones as you decrease the tone pot.
Biohazard
Ok I actually got that the wrong way round. Tone capacitors knock off the trebles when you turn the tone pot down. The higher the value capacitor, the more trebles that are knocked off when the tone pot is turned down.
soapbarstrat
I think the only time a cap is used on the volume is when it's a treble bypass cap (250 pf - .001 mfd )
