Meegs666 Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 ive read that red oak has tonal characteristics very similar to rock maple. other than maple and mahogany, what other woods can be used to make a suitable neck that will be strong enough and not lose any of the tonal properties? Quote
hyunsu Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 my choice is sapele.. it is really dense and suitable. my guitar make sapele neck & ebony.. but neck is not removing.. Quote
skibum5545 Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Walnut, wenge, ovangkol, pau ferro, purpleheart, bloodwood, padauk, goncalo alves, rosewood, mahogany, really any stable hardwood! Quote
Guitarfrenzy Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 It's not a question about Oak being strong enough, because it is. The only issues are that it weighs way too much, and isn't considered a tone wood. Those two things keep it from being used in guitar building, although some have built guitars with oak... but you just better be ready to wear a back brace when playing it. lol Quote
Primal Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 I like walnut personally. About the oak, I read somewhere (MIMF I think) that there were acids in the wood that would eat away at metal (i.e. the truss rod). I am not sure about that, though. Quote
spirit Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Brian May made his guitar of oak, didn't he?? Quote
Myka Guitars Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Brian May made his guitar of oak, didn't he?? Yes he did. Well almost. The fingerboard is oak as well as the center core of the body (which is chambered, sort of). Here is a link to an article about his original guitar: The Red Special Quote
john Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 i used iroko on my two completed guitars, seems ok so far. Quote
