ShreddyKrueger
Does anyone know if it's true that it's illegal to replicate the Eddie Van Halen style paint?
stevenh
EVH has trademarked his distinctive striped design. If your going to paint your guitar and not sell it, I think it's ok. However, if you paint guitars like his and sell them, you are violating trademark/copyright laws, and you can be sued.
Scott Rosenberger
If you try and sell the guitar and EVH's lawyers find out, you'll get a pretty intimidating letter from them telling you to stop. The letter we got also offered a licensing deal whereas we could still keep painting them provided we paid EHV a $25,000.00 Royalty on each one we painted
Scott Rosenberger
EVH has trademarked his distinctive striped design. Actually he's trademarked any paint design with red white & black random stripes. not just the few designs you see on his guitars. The Black & Yellow Striped and Black & White Striped Guitars are copyrighted as well

G_urr_A
You could get around it if you had a paint that would turn black/white if left in sunlight or something. Just a thought, I dunno if some such paint exists.
