EVH has trademarked his distinctive striped design. If your going to paint your guitar and not sell it, I think it's ok. However, if you paint guitars like his and sell them, you are violating trademark/copyright laws, and you can be sued.

If you try and sell the guitar and EVH's lawyers find out, you'll get a pretty intimidating letter from them telling you to stop.

The letter we got also offered a licensing deal whereas we could still keep painting them provided we paid EHV a $25,000.00 Royalty on each one we painted :D

Actually he's trademarked any paint design with red white & black random stripes. not just the few designs you see on his guitars. The Black & Yellow Striped and Black & White Striped Guitars are copyrighted as well

You could get around it if you had a paint that would turn black/white if left in sunlight or something. Just a thought, I dunno if some such paint exists.
