Here is a link that i found helpful. it shows how to mount it easily in a bench top for use upside down.

I've got a proper (albeit extraordinarily cheapo) router table now, but before I got that I used this:

It did the job very well, and was simpler than the first example above. It was just a sheet of chipboard, with a cutout for a plywood insert which I screwed to the router. It sat on 2 lengths of 2x4 which raised it above the surface of the workmate it was clamped to.
