  1. ok heres the deal im prolly gonna be building atleast 1 guitar this summer and i want to do the finishing myself, the last two guitars ive had a friend paint and clear for me. it costs alot of money as i found out and i would prefer to do it myself from now on. im from upstate ny so in the summer its always hot and humid not the best for finishing of course. i have a large compressor and a couple spray guns right now. i dont have a spray booth and i dont know much about them. what would you guys recommend for clearing like poly or laquer, rattle cans, regular spray from the gun etc etc and help would be greatly appreciated MzI
  2. is there any reason why you cant touch up with more poly even if its a 1 part poly?? MzI
  3. hey part of ri are you in, im in college in ri and ive been lookin for decent lumber yards is there any around here MzI
  4. after puttin blocks of wood in there i recommend 2 part wood putty, works the same as bondo for guitars dries really hard and is paintable and sandable etc etc MzI
  5. ^^^^ the flake comes in a bunch of different colors to so make sure you match the one you want with your paint color so it looks right MzI
  6. look around for ppg paint suppliers that would prolly be your best bet MzI
  7. the only problem with shooting it would be that once the bullet hit the back side of the guitar would be blown out when the bullet expanded creating a rather larger hole and a mess, but if it were a fender it wouldnt matter ne ways MzI
  8. usually guitars with a top on them have 4 pieces if im not mistaken 2 on the back and then 2 bookmatched on the top MzI
  9. are you using actual dye or stain, i dye my maple body and just taped the sides with maskin tape for a natural binding and it came out well no dye on the sides at all it was really easy to do to btw MzI
  10. in autocad you can plot the drawing to a file as a jpg with a scale and then print it out as a picture from photoshop or sumthing else MzI
  11. that crackle finish might look cool with black top and neon orange crackles kinda a racer x style orange MzI
  12. if you got the file from guitarbuild.com there is dimensions on there i think when u open the file in cad go under the layers and turn the layer dimension on and it will show the dimensions also under the same thing usually the dimension layer wil have the printer thing with an x thru it just click it so the dimensions print MzI
  13. you get a null vote from me bcuz Hetfield, Mustaine, the Nuge, Marty Friedman, jason Becker, kirk hammet (even though he sucks hes still better then kurt cobain) (sorry had to), paul gilbert, michael romeo, and a bunch of others that are already mentioned and the ones i cant think of right now arent on there o yea and jack white is the best guitarist ever to walk the face of the planet ( to those in the players corner thread) MzI yes sarcasm i love it
  14. dont glue at first you can always take the neck off and put glue on it afterwards once its all straight and everything is right MzI
  15. ok thanx ill keep searchin the web MzI
  16. anyone kno of any solvents or anything that will remove poly u glue without destroying wood or clear coat MzI
  17. megadeth the last duelin riff in shewolf van halen the first riff to you really got me right after eruption, yes i kno it was written by the kinks but it just sounds so cool right after the end of the solo metallica intro to ride the lightning, intro to seek and destroy megadeth intro to loved to deth thats all i can think of right now MzI
  18. actually in the new lz double dvd he plays a black danelectro for a couple songs and the rest of the time its either the 59 lp which is so damn beautiful and the es 1275 MzI
  19. if ya screw up so what, set it aside for now and then go build another one and then when you get good go back and repair your first one, i screwed my first one up slightly so im gettin it fixed cuz im at school and cant start building my second one but i do have it all planned out MzI
  20. mayb for the bridge height because toms are adjustable put a spacer in the neck pocket to make up for the thickness of the aluminum, as for screwing the aluminum down, i would predrill the aluminum and the the wood and take a regular hand screwdriver and screw em in make sure you dont make the wholes too big cuz you are gonna need sum wood for the screws to catch on to hold the aluminum down, question for ya are you having any finish put onto the guitar like paint or clear or ne thing, if your are using mahogany your are gonna need a hard coat and that can be a pain tryin to screw sumthing into straight without a starter hole, a file will take down the sides and smooth em out for ya MzI
  21. if your goin for that metal look you might want to check out James Hetfield's diamond plate explorers the real ones not the $#!t that esp sells and trys to call diamond plate, if im not mistaken only the front has the metal on it, its held on there by pickguard screws which would be really easy to do just drill sum pilot holes and start screwin it down, if you do go with gluing it down make sure that you completely cover every inch of surface of the metal or whatever so that you dont get any air pockets, also i read sumwhere dont know where that if you completely cover the body in metal it will alter the sound dont kno how or why or what itll sound like but im pretty sure it will, try goin with emg pickups if you dont want the sound altered that much and are goin just for the look MzI
  22. you might want to look into sperzel tuners, i have the lockin ones on 2 of my guitars i love em even tho i dont have a trem i have toms they stay in tune really well, the sets ii get ran about 50 usd or so i think they are worth it MzI
  23. Very sweet, i like that head larger head stock too MzI
  24. carvin has kits, another big place would be warmoth.com they have tons of options and you can get em finished to any extent, only thing i dont like bout em is they only do bolt ons MzI
