  1. Thanks, I thought it was too good to be true, however maybe interesting patterns could be achieved...
  2. What do ya reckon? could a guitar body be sand blasted smooth prior to finishing. It would save an awful lot of time if it worked. Anyone heard of it?
  3. Thanks that's what my gut feeling was, however I didn't know all that about sublimation! That's set my mind at rest anyway.
  4. I Don't know very much about acoustics, and someone said to me the other day that acoustics actually sound worse the older they get. This sounds rather strange, as the only thing I know can happen to old guitars is things like the neck warping etc. not the tone of the guitar getting worse with age. Does this statement have any truth behind it?
  5. Dream Theater are the best. Simple as that.
  6. Name: Floral SG. Specs: 25.5" scale with 24 frets, neck-thru construction, mahogany for both body and neck, with a rosewood fingerboard. Hard tail, string-thru body bridge. The pickups are vintage, brand new old stock from a little known and now defunct guitar manufacturer. They sound great. Total cost of the guitar was somewhere in the region of £70 ($140), as reclaimed timber was used, along with second hand parts.
  7. Does anyone know what guitar this is, or is it completely custom? Because it looks really nice, and I'd like to find out more about it if possible. The picture is from the stewmac website.
  8. Go on the warmoth website, this tells advantages and disadvantages of single action truss rods.
  9. By sideways do you mean twisting? if so, then yes it would help.
  10. I think oak has a pretty dull tone, from what I've heard. It is also very unstable, and so should be very thoroughly dried before being used.
  11. No, the neck goes over the pickguard too.
  12. There is a tutorial on it on this website. I built it into one of my guitars, and found that is sucks tone a bit, you tend to lose top end.
  13. Okay thanks, yeah I just built an sg type guitar, which is only about 30mm thick, but it was thru-body so it didn't matter.
  14. What a stupid choice of material for a guitar stand... of all the different substances out there, manufacturers have chosen a material which destroys the finish of many guitars!!
  15. I like to build my guitars with thin bodies, and so the body blank for the bass I'm building is only 32mm thick. As it is going to be a bolt on this would mean the neck pocket would only be about 12mm (1/2") thick. Do you think this would be strong enough or should I laminate a 10mm thick piece of wood onto the body blank? Thanks.
  16. The wood is more yellow than the photo shows, so maybe it is, and thanks for the link, jmrenits, that looks to be a very useful website.
  17. I guess it will remain a mystery then...
  18. I'm, pretty sure it's a hardwood though, can a coniforous wood have pores?.
  19. Walnut eh? I didn't think of that. The second one definatly isn't pine, its harder than oak, plus the colouring is brighter than the picture shows.
  20. I'd say about 1/2" again. That will ensure it is strong enough.
  21. The low profile floyd rose has a narrower string spacing, 0.40" compared to 0.42"
  22. I think if your'e going to leave a part of the neck without a truss rod, the heel end would be best, as this is quite a bit stronger than the headstock end, and less liable to warp. But 4 inches is quite alot. www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk sell truss rods which are just under 21", and, as well as ones just under 23", but I don't know if they post to wherever you are.
