  2. thats what i do, but im sure there are more experienced builders here with better ideas.
  3. yeah i got mine from stew mac. i just noticed that there are two floor thicknesses available. stew mac only sell one but which one i dont know?
  4. looking good, i spy something beginning with s and ending with g in the backround..... do you have an sg body in the background od one of the pics? john.
  5. i agree, i have the hipshot fixed bridge on one of mine. solid brass bridge (a little heavier than a bent steel one), and the saddles are cast with a matt finish so they look like brushed aluminium. and as scott says, they are very comfortable because of the rounded edges. also i used this bridge with no neck angle on a neckthru guitar. i just about got away with it john.
  6. for what its worth, the bass i made is 16mm and the one thats in progress is 17mm hope that helps ya.
  7. i reckon you`ll need to change the proportions of the body to make it look 'right' and then after all that its not really gonna look like the warwick anymore... but i think the concept has real potential and i`d be very interested in seeing it develop.
  8. classic rock all the way baby!!!
  9. i use a 1/4" bit with no shimming, have done it three times now and no problems yet. as far as traditional rods are concerned, i was thinking, could`nt you just do a graduated route and then smooth it using a narrow chisel? just a thought
  10. cool, thanks for the info.
  11. honestly , i think that for 3 years playing your doing pretty well. It has taken me 6 or 7 to truly get comfortable with the guitar. As has been mentioned before, you should probably play acoustic some more. I have found it beneficial in the past, it forces you to let your fingers to the talking and not rely on fancy effects to make it sound cool. just keep it up, some day it`ll all fall into place nicely.
  12. oh by the way im not trying to start an arguement, sorry if it comes across like that. john.
  13. the way i see it, the wood essentially acts as a damper between both ends of the string. therefore certain properties of certain wood give a different frequency response, the closest analogy is to that of a low pass filter. wes, i think that coment about ppl who 'have ears' is a little silly to be honest. i dont doubt there are differences between wood, in fact i know there are. but to 75% of the earths population, that just isnt noticed. and to say that those ppl(i may be one of them) have no ears? seriously. i congratulate you and others who have such a good ear for music but i dont think people who are building their 1st 2nd or 3rd instrument should be too worried about their choice of wood. imo there are far more important factors to be worrying about if you are only learning to build. a poorly constructed instrument made of the finest wood would sound poor compared to a guitar made of the cheapest crap by the finest luthier in the world. basically what im trying to say is that some people read too deep into the tone of wood question and should eb concentrating on other more important factors. p.s i do not claim to be in any way decent at building guitars or wholly knowledgeable on the subject, just my €0.02
  14. can someone explain to me what the tbx system actually does? ive heard of it before but never known what it is. thanks, john.
  15. i dunno, ive always found that the best way to make my practice amp sound like a tube amp is to pull pained expressions and drop to your knees for the solo..... it really works.
  16. thats so funny i nearly peed in my pants.
  17. by who? is it george thorogood by any chance? thanks.
  18. ooh a contoured heel like the 50th anniversary strat... very tasty!
  19. "Carl: Player. Player will change the sound more than-People get too involved in all that stuff about finishes and wood. Change the scale length and you'll really know the difference. If a guy comes in with a piece, a bass like this and it's made out of Mahogany or it's made out of Walnut or Cherry or Swamp Ash or any of those things that they talk about all the time. And somebody comes in with the same bass made out of a totally different wood. I'll bet if people couldn't see it they wouldn't know. But I'll tell you one thing that would change it: the scale length. If one of them had a 36-inch length and one of them had a 34-inch scale you'd hear a difference right away. I'm not saying that woods don't have different properties and different sounds but I don't think-It's pretty hard to tell. That's so close. A piece of Maple is going to sound brighter than a piece of Mahogany probably but which piece of Maple is it and which piece of Mahogany is it? And who's playing it? And what pickups are you using? What kind of amplifier? What kind of strings are on it? If you're going to get that particular about that area then you better get particular about it all. Because it just doesn't happen." something ive always believed.
  20. i voted for mikeb - the B1 'june' i think it is a very classy looking axe, and has two very compelling features, the 31 fret neck and the pitch pine body, unusual but beautiful john.
  21. im impressed, for a first that looks very well made! the heel looks a little blocky tho! i agree with you on the colour, it does like quite nice. john.
  22. thats odd, cos i dont use use my nads for anything, other than sex that is....
