  1. That is interesting. Because almost all the top end luthiers i know of use brown or a darker color of the top coat.
  2. Whether you agree with it or not, it is true. Black can kill the grain instead of make it pop most of the time. If you look at the difference between woods dyed black first, and woods dyed with a darker color first, the ones dyed with a darker matching color are much deeper and more 3d. Black first just gives it contrast and kills the figure.
  3. Acrylic is the same thing as waterbased lacquer. You should be able to use whatever you used for that before.
  4. I was going to ask if that bullseye stuff was dewaxed. How do you thin it? I think i found a way round it. I wet sanded the top part with mineral spirits, then worked in an oil finish with 2k grit sandpaper. It buffed it nicely and worked the oil in. It brough out the the color nicely and gave it a very nice satin sheen.
  5. I just might have to do that. I had yet to run into a wood that i couldnt use regular poly on. Even cocobolo seemed to handle it fine. I have been meaning to try shellac anyway. This might be a real reason to do so.
  6. So, Onward to more finishing problems... Never had a a single problem with my usual open grained poly finishes. But of course... the one commission i take... Apparently the rosewood veneer doenst like poly. It stayed gooey and soft for over a week, and pretty much just rolls off the wood. Yet another refinish needed.
  7. nice work on the dye. I could never get it to come out like that when i experimented with dying black first. No matter what i did, the black would be extremely splotch and wouldnt sand all the way out of the lighter grain like that.
  8. Haha Mike, On its way! JJ, Its a customer guitar... that is not what he wants.
  9. Thanks for the suggestions. But i can guarantee if i tried to do any of those, it would come out worse than the way it is now. I cant pull that kind of stuff off.
  10. Thanks for the replies. I have used their normal strings, and i thought they were good... That was my concern, SS strings on NS frets. I get a lot of wear just from regular strings on my frets, because i dont know how to play and i press so dang hard. Might try some eventually anyway. I think i would like the extra brightness.
  11. What is your reason behind gluing it on after? I really dont see a reason to do that.
  12. that could have been a possibility Mike, but this is a customer guitar... Yeah, gasp. But he is fine with it, even though i am not.
  13. Yup, i knew that would be the first thing that somebody would point out. Normally i get that dead on. I mis measured when put the neck pocket template on. Just another mishap to add to the never ending list.
  14. Sanded it to 320 today. Will hit it with 400 tomorrow and get it sprayed.
  15. Yeah, there is nothing more annoying and infuriating than tools that dont work or that dont work correctly. Aside from the tracking issue, it works well. I only payed 200 for it, from some computer geek guy that didnt know much about it. So i couldt really turn around and buy a new one after selling it. maybe one day i will find a way.
  16. Thanks for the advice RAD. The table is square to the spindle. I have checked that many times. At one point i even messed with it so much that it was out of square ike 3/4", and it didnt make a difference on the belt tracking. What doesnt make even more sense, is that the side that its tracking to is adjusted more than on the left. it should be tracking to the other side.
  17. So much for the spalted explorer. Somehow the last milisecond during buffing the top got screwd up. apparently the top wasnt compatible with mineral spirits.... but the entire rest of the guitar was. Makes absolutely zero sense, and cost me a whole guitar.
  18. Well, The thing is, when I first got it, it was tracking off to the left. THen i messed with it and now it tracks off to the right. So i did something that changed it. But i have since, in the past 4 years, done every single thing that i did before, in reverse order. And it never got fixed.
  19. I like all of it, except for the deep carve along the heel on the bass side. I always hate the way that looks being carve way under the fretboard line.
  20. Yeah, i mean this is literally within less than a minute of run time.
  21. Just thought it would be funny to bump this... still never figured it out. Still have to re set the belt ever 3 passes.
  22. Got the body routed. Waiting on customer for the pot hole configuration. On a side note, I have a MASSIVE desire to do a baritone and one with a floyd. I have so many ideas, and i cant get to them fast enough.
  23. that is one thing about doing laminated necks. You really have to be careful on the widths around the nut, or else the taper might go into the next laminate. Cut it kinda close there!
  24. Has anybody used stainless steel strings? GFS has some for pretty cheap, and i was wondering how they are. I am mostly concerned with them wearing the frets.
