  1. So $400 for this project....I'm definately jealous. Basses like that go for well over 2 grand from most shops, you saved yourself a boatload of money. And, yeah its just cool....like I said, can't/don't have enough to say.
  2. Man. Loostoe, my hand goes out to you. I'm super glad you picked the body design you did, and I'm absolutely blown away by how its turning out. Is this a bass you plan to keep for yourself? If so, damn! The color on that maple is out of this world gorgeous, as is the mahogany. The contrast, and the paduak wings, i just don't have enough to say about it. I hope you plan to enter it in the GOTM contest (though, unfortunately if you do, I'll have to vote for you instead of myself) Bravo, absolutely bravo. This is my favorite of all the work you've posted so far.
  3. This FBass is in the same style as that Gothic above. Except WAY cooler....ash makes for some pretty amazing stuff.... Notice the p/u covers...
  4. Looks like a lot of water to me, which has now upset the moisture content, exapnded the timber, and seeped into the glue join. Bad idea.... not to mention the gaps. Doesn't that worry you litch?
  5. is it confusing building a left guitar? or is it any different? I think given my previous history, i would look at it and think i was working on the wrong side or something?
  6. Ash is a pretty hard/dense wood, as you've probably noticed because your chunk is probably pretty heavy. Haven't personally worked with it, aside from cutting a board out from a log and getting it set up to dry... Ash does have a VERY wide grain, if you wan't a smooth surface for staining, you're gonna have to use some sort of grain filler. One of my basses is made of ash, and the grain is NOT filled, and I think it adds a pretty cool effect, although the finish is now coming off from so much playing....
  7. ah yes, the furthest outline i do like very much. Looks much better with the sorta 'swung' bottom like that. The headstock i think should be fine. Order some mini's from Gotoh or Hipshot, I kinda dig that look.
  8. No, not at all. Poplar is not a choice neck wood. For that guitar I'd recommend a mahogany neck. However if you intend to build a neck it'd help to have a bandsaw, powered hand drill or a drill press, a belt sander, and a router. I supposed it's feasable to make a neck with all hand tools, but the large amount of work it would take isn't worth it. There may be woodworkers coops in your area, or you may be able to take it to a lumber yard and have them rough cut it and route a truss channel for you. Kirk
  9. what makes it look weird is that the lower body curve (the one that comes back up towards the body) doesnt curve back up enough. Because of this it both looks lopsided, and unpleasing. Make it bigger, and I think it will look pretty cool.
  10. haha...ha...whoa. I like the trick with the natural binding, you don't see it too often where it actually has that small lip on the top of the guitar as well.
  11. I think you should build a guitar with it! What sort of look are you going for? Do you have enough for a neck through? You might come off nice if you laminate a 3 or 5 piece neck with the maple and your "faux" mahogany (what is this stuff? can you explain?) and then throw the ash on there as body wings. Some ash has great grain figure, so depending on what you've got there, you might want a natural finish? What are YOUR thoughts? Edit: If the maple is wide enough, you could use that for a top and back of a hollowbody, and the mahogany-esque stuff for a neck. Many jazz guitars have mahogany necks, though it would be smartest to laminate cross-grained pieces for stability.
  12. I have a western big leaf maple tree in my back yard. A big one. I already offered my parents to replace it with a pine tree if they let me cut it down.... they said no.
  13. yeah they have those for like 3 different scale lengths in the PRS factory, and probably in other major factories too. What a great thing to have...
  14. simply amazing work. I think you have posted this somewhere before? I have definately seen this. I like the lyrics on the neck. What are your plans for this guitar?
  15. that's all i've made, i'm a bass player so yes, 4 string basses with a 1 3/4" nut, feel good....
  16. 1. Hadn't drilled it yet! 2. Yes and no. The screw holes are aligned right, but one side of the bridge route is slightly angled. The template started sliding, and I didnt notice right away, the bridge installes square, and you can't see the mistake. The bridge still looks crooked in this pic because it is just resting in the hole, not installed, so it slants with the slanted side
  17. "Instant" But it takes a day...
  18. These pics are just what the guitar looks like after lacquering. Theres been no wetsanding or buffing yet. There will be many more pics once that stage has been completed. I managed to find some great black lacquer. If anyone ever needs to put a finish on the guitar, but cant afford the buffing equip and time, ACE Hardware (i dunno how far the chain reaches) has these cans of "Instant Drying" Gloss Black Lacquer. The pics you see are the dry lacquer...
  19. For those that asked BLS: The last two fret markers somehow ended up slightly lower. They're still quite level and smooth, just not really lined up. You can't notice unless you look close, like in this pic
  20. My new Devilbiss Finishline FLG3, more on it later once I test it out. Thanks, Kirk
  21. i rough cut the profile of the back of the neck with a band saw, and then used a belt sander to get it to thickness. Once that was done, I went back and forth across the drum of the belt sander and various angles until i had a roughly round shape on the back. Then I began going at intermediated angles to get rid of the rough steps, until i had a relatively smooth, but perfectly round back. I then hand sanded starting with 60 grit and finishing with 400. The whole time I checked it towards a light to make sure the curvature and thickness was still consistent. Sorry for the delay in the update. Looks like things are nearing a close!
  22. Looks SWEEET Is the pickup going to be angled like that?
