  1. I have a Pod XT Live with the VDI input so power isn't a problem for me personally but I'll probably still have a battery compartment on mine anyway. I'm going to stick with using the AA batteries rather than a single 9-volt, but I'm instead of using the Line 6 battery box I'll make my own, which be a lot smaller, the Line 6 one is much bigger than necessary IMO.
  2. Scitscat Music has a variax 300 for sale $280. I just bought one from guitar centers for $300. I've got a transplant in the works. I really should move to the USA I just paid £250 ($500) for my 300 over here
  3. I'm actually about to start building one, unlike most of the 'transplants' I've seen I'll be using the electric's from the 300 model, so it will be front routed with a scratchplate. The electric's are the same on all the models of course but the 300's are mounted inside a metal casing, although apparently it is possible to free the 300 electric's from the casing without to much hassle.
  4. Yeah, I have to admit carrying it up 2 flights of stairs at a gig a few weeks ago wasn't my idea of fun it's surprisingly large too, much bigger than it appears on the website, it's not much smaller than a 4x12" cab. I didn't try the Vox, to be honest the Pod was a bit of an impulse buy, I was only looking for a simple overdrive pedal for my Marshall TSL 601 combo but I stumbled across a great deal on the Pod so I went for it. I've never been a fan of multi fx pedals but as my band seems to be heading in a more 'progressive' direction (think Porcupine Tree, etc) I thought the extra options it would give me might come in useful, especially as I was planning on buying a Variax as well (just got one last week). But no matter what I tried the Pod just wouldn't sound good with my TSL, so after reading up on the Atomic's I decided to take the plunge, I sold my 4 week old TSL and ordered the Atomic and I have no regrets at all... I'm probably started to sound like I'm on commission but it really is THAT good.
  5. Woah...long time no update... I'd abandoned this project over the winter while I was busy with other things, and then I kind of got side-tracked with building my 6 string bass There's not really a lot to update on, apart from fretting the neck I haven't done a great deal since the last time I posted. I did have a bit of a disaster while drilling the ferrule holes on the top of the guitar, my cheap piece of s*** drill press (now replaced) was to blame and the result was 2 holes that were slightly out of line, although it probably wouldn't be very noticeable, being a perfectionist I wasn't too happy but I've made up a small plate out of Ebony that will sit on top of the body and house the ferrules, after the initial panic it actually turned out quite well. No, I've not tried the booster but I can say for definite now that I won't be using one, I now have a Pod XT Live pedal so I've got no real use for any sort of onboard gizmo's. In fact I doubt I'll end up using EMG's pickups in this guitar, I brought an Ibanez SZ with an 81/85 set a few months ago, although I do really like the EMG's I prefer to have different pickups in all my guitars, just to give me a bit more variety.
  6. I use a Pod XT Live plugged in to one of these.... http://www.atomicamps.com/products-212-50.html In the 10 years or so I've been playing in bands I've never found an amp that I was 100% happy with until I brought this a couple of months ago, it sounds incredible with the XT Live
  7. Thanks Yes, the neck pocket goes all the way to the pickup cavity. There's no heal section to the body so the pocket needed to go quite deep into the body. I was hoping the bass would be a little further along by now, but I've had a severe bout of Sinusitis over the last few weeks, so sawdust is the last thing I want to be around at the moment
  8. 2 Granadillo fretboard blanks, £15 for both (inc postage), Paypal preferred. 1) 20 1/4" long, 4" wide, 7mm thick 2) 19 3/4" long, 4" wide, 7mm thick Close up... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simnett/fre1.jpg
  9. I've decided to sell my TSL, it's only 3 weeks old! but I've just brought a POD XT Live and I've decided to buy an Atomic amp to use with it instead of the Marshall, sadly I can't afford to hold on to both set up's, so I'm selling the Marshall on. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...DME:L:LCA:UK:11 Any questions just shoot me a PM
  10. Thanks I suppose it's not that common but I've seen a fair few bass builders that use the same method. No just the fretboard, the body and neck laminates were from SoundAt11.
  11. Just a quick update... the neck pocket was routed today and I've made a good start on shaping the neck
  12. Just turned 24 a couple of months back.
  13. Thanks, the rear laminate came out really well... http://usera.imagecave.com/Simnett/PIC_0076.JPG I'll take some up to date pictures of the rear when I've done some shaping.
  14. It's been a month since I've been able to do any work on this bass, finally I've had chance to do some work on the neck this weekend! The picture speaks for itself really... the fretboard was slotted, the nut slot and truss rod access hole have been routed, then the board was glued on and trimmed to shape.
  15. I wish that was the case Alder, like Basswood can be hard to find over here... in my experience anyway.
  16. I have a SIP 14" bandsaw, I've brought other SIP tools before including the 6" jointer, which I wouldn't recommend... however the bandsaw isn't bad. Some of the plastic fittings are a bit flimsy and cheap but that's relative to the price, like you say there's no other 14" saws in that price range. It performs well for the small price tag and has served me well for general cutting and ripping over the last 2 years. I've used it for bookmatching tops recently and it worked fine. One thing I would suggest if you brought it, is to replace the factory fitted blade with a better quality one. I actually brought mine from that seller on ebay (West Skelston Services), very good service, I'd definitely recommend them.

  18. Yep looks like a Paul Stanley Washburn to me... http://www.kissasylum.com/photos/lisa/Paul...hburn_large.jpg +1 on ditching that neck, it's firewood in my opinion
  19. I disagree. GOTM has no rules on what type of guitar/bass is entered, original design or not... anything goes (hell we've even had Uke's entered before! ) it's then voted by everyone, not by a team of well respected judges who go over every little detail to select a winner... therefore in my eyes at least this little comp will be different. I can honestly see both sides of the arguments in this thread, and I'm sure whatever the final decision is not everybody will be 100% happy, that's life. But hopefully we can reach a compromise that suits most people and maximises the amount of entries, that's the most important thing in my opinion. EDIT: Just to clarify... when I said 'your own' design I meant an original design not an 'any shape goes' contest, sorry if that wasn't clear in my first post (I blame the Guinness )
  20. We could always make the rules of the competition that you have to make YOUR OWN design, from a judging point of view that would be more interesting to score, plus it would make it significantly different from GOTM. To me that's more of a challenge than building an LP, Tele, Prs, copy.
