  1. Hey, I don't think it can import power tabs, however it can import from MIDI files and ASCII tabs (the latter obviously doesnt including any timing information). There is a huge library of Guitar Pro tabs at My Songbook. I'll think you'll find for simple listening to tabs the Guitar Pro demo is fine, as long as you can put up with a nag screen at the beginning. One of hte best things I think guitar pro has over powertab is it has much better management of multiple tracks, which is great for me as i generally like to learn fairly complex(ish) multiple guitar songs for the band and with mates. Its also more handy for writing songs; especially with multiple guitar tracks, cause i can throw in some percussion, bass or guitar really easily to jam to/test out. - Dan
  2. I prefer www.guitar-pro.com - it has way more features, but unfortunately its not free like powertab. - Dan
  3. if you replace the local file path with his remote one you can find his finished images: http://fullservesite.com/john/body_angle.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/body_angle_2.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/guitar_angle.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/guitar_back.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/guitar_back_closeup.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/guitar_front.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/guitar_side.jpg http://fullservesite.com/john/headstock_side.jpg Nice work btw - Dan
  4. That looks amazing! But.. I dont understand why the top peice has been cut with less width than the base peice? Is that purely an aesthetic thing or is that done for a reason? Looks awesome though - Dan ps: steve cripes looks like chuck norris
  5. Sorry to sidetrack, but would class the Jackson DXMG as a low-end Jackson? Cause im looking at one of those at the moment - Dan
  6. Lovely! Thanks Brian, your a champ I'll try it at soon as I have the new body cut out (change of plans) - Dan
  7. Hi, Im interested in doing a material finish on a guitar I have here, but since im fairly new to this, i'm after some really simple step-by-step clarification if you would be so kind So: 1. I strip the body of its existing finish down to bare wood 2. Cut out my stencil template of the body 3. Cut out my peice(s) of material 4. Paint the sides of the body and cavities the desired matching colour (?) 5. Put on the glue, spread it out evenly 6. Apply material, avoiding all bubbles ect. and slitting where necessary to releive pressure 7. Apply grain filler 8. Apply (im a poor boy ) burst matching colour on the edges 9. Apply clear coats ?? Comments and corrections and advice would be appreciated Thanks - Dan
  8. Hmmm I've never built a guitar before, and the closest I have come is the warlock copy I am in the process of refinishing as a learning project. I'm not saying I dont want to build a guitar, but im talking about buying a pretty serious peice of equipment here... i mean, its like at the very low end of proffessional stuff, and I dont think i have the skill or the money to blow to go spending the money on good enough quality parts to build a guitar comparable in quality to the DXMG (for example) when there is a good chance i will root it up And I have looked around at parts before, and from what I can see buying stuff in Australia (like everything) is pretty expensive. And from just doing some sums just now, even if I bought all the parts the cheapest way (from the US), it would still work out more expensive than the deal from music123, and thats not even factoring in the postage costs on everything besides hte body/neck.
  9. Hey I'm an Australian resident, and i'm looking at purchasing a guitar from the site music123.com. I'm looking at getting the Jackson DXMG (http://www.music123.com/item/?itemno=71131&match=1) with a Jackson hardshell case for $690USD including international postage (thats about $890AUD). Now i'm aware of the general opinion of ordering guitars of the internet, but i'm afraid the insanely expensive prices over here transcend and negative possibilities of getting a lemon guitar or not having local service. To get the same guitar with the same model hardshell jackson case in Australia the best price I've found is $1350AUD.... thats $450 more..... and even if i get hit with tax when it hits aussie customs its still only $950 Anway, the one thing im very worried about is that, well you see earlier on in the peice I was going to get a DX10D Dinky and put 2 new pickups on it, but it has a volume knob RIGHT up under the bridge pickup, which is just plain bad on a metal guitar as far as im concerned - however, the DXMG doesnt have this (cause its only got 1 tone pot i imagine), but the knob is still rather close considering im used to a gutiar with its control down fairly low. Does anyone else have this problem with their guitar? Any ideas? cause it seems like such a small issue and I really love this guitar. Also, your probably thinking "has this idiot played this guitar before he's thinkig of buying it?" well... no i haven't, but im tring hard to find somewhere near me who stocks one of the things so I can try it, cause i doubt i would be able to bring myself to buy a guitar without trying it out well first. Its also a bit of a bummer because to get the volume knob even that low i needed to go the DXMG model, and by doing that im getting a more expensive guitar that already has 2 EMG-HZ's in it, and although I would probably be satisfied with those pickups, i wouldnt have minded choosing them myself I suppose I could always sell the bridge HZ in mint conidtion and get an EMG-81 or a Seymour Duncan Invader. Still, that is no big deal, I would be content to go with the HZ's and look at my options IF they werent up to scratch, although ive played them before and i thought they were fine.... some peopel say pinch harmonics on them are abosulutely horrible... and i dont like the sound of that. So, any advice that might help me in my sitation would be greatly appreciated, as im in a bit of a bind... although for me finding somewhere to have a good play on a demo of this guitar is at the top of my agenda. Thanks a lot, - Dan PS: Sorry for making you all read so much

I would have also thought a lot of those real metal guitarists deserved a spot higher than Angus Young. Sure I love ACDC, but they weren't exactly metal If I had to choose I would be picking the metallica guys or dimebag darrel or the iron maiden guys as #1, but like somoene pointed out - its a thing based on the opinon of the people at Guitar World, and it wont reflect everyone's views. However... there is some pretty dissapointing inclusions... I would like to read their justifications.

  13. Thanks for the tip Brian, however I think im more interested in a wooden or material finish, so would rather just take the risk and get rid of the existing finish so i can see what the wood underneath is like A solid colour finish is sort of a last resort for me, as I would probably be doing it black if i did that (and even though it would be cool, maybe a tad boring?). If i took it all off and ended up doing a solid colour finish I might kick myself, but i figure i could just run over it with a course sandpaper to give the paint something to hold on to - heh. Roughly how would I go about doing a finish thats a cross between solid colour and wooden? Like a wine red finish that still has some grain showing through? From a bit of reading and trying to figure it out, atm im under the impresssion it would be basically just like the wooden finish, but instead of using a wood coloured wood-dye, i would use a dark red/wine red wood-dye, then i would use a matte nitrocellulose lacquer so that way its not all insanely reflective in the light? Thanks _again_ , - Dan
  14. Thanks a lot for the replies. As per some posts I will strip the paint off over the coming days and when thats done ill post another picture of it so you guys can give me some pointers. So if im using spray cans (most likely), I would have cans of colour, and cans of nitrocellulose clear stuff? and i just do the colour on the wood and then the nitrocellulose? is there a primer or something that needs to be put on before those? Anyway, I will get rid of the paint and report back then Thanks again, - Dan
  15. Hi, Just recently I bought a fairly crappy old Onyx guitar second hand, and I am planning on refinishing it it and _maybe_ replacing the neck as a project. Im in the process of reading the great documents from the Guitar ReRanch, however one thing out of all the sites ive read that hasnt been explained, is exactly what product acheives what with regard to all the terms that get thrown around... Now at the moment im assuming my first step is to strip the body of its current finish with either chemical strippers or with sandpaper - Im 99% sure i can handle that without too many specific instructions; however its the next stage im pretty confused about. Aside from just being boring and painting this thing black - the two options I am keen on is a wooden finish (ala James Hetfields Ken Lawrence Explorer), or a material finish (which i found out about from a tutorial on this website). Now I was planning on making a decision on how i would finish it after i had stripped it of its paint, since im not sure what the wood underneath is going to be like, however, could someone fairly breifly run down on whas required when finishing with a solid colour and for a wooden finish? take wooden for example... At the moment I am assuming I would need some wood dye, like http://store.yahoo.com/reranchstore/andyecol.html, and then after applying that i would need to apply levels of something like http://store.yahoo.com/reranchstore/nitclearcoat.html ? Am I sort of on the mark? So with painting a solid colour is the paint mixed in with the nitrocellulose stuff? Sorry about the long post... but Im just in need of some guidance thats all PS - I'm new, very nice forums/site. Thanks - Dan
