  1. Y'all might remember in late last year when I got 100% fed up with myself and the lack of attention to detail I was giving. Planing off the top is a direct result of that unwillingness to accept less than I'm capable of doing. No more settling, no more 'good enough'. Here's the headstock inlay in place, cut flush, binding on and scraped flush. I sealed the face with shellac before doing the binding. Cocobolo is such a PIA....
  2. That's something to be proud of, sir! We're in an elite group. In one of my current builds, I drilled for the tuner holes, then didn't like the placement. It was a mental chore deciding how best to hide that one, but it's turning out all good in the end.
  3. I've documented a lot of mine in my build threads. The trick is being able to fix them invisibly.
  4. maple - walnut maple - cocobolo/cherry coco is fairly dark, and the cherry will get dark over time.... It'll be all good in the end.
  5. That's a fair assessment. Deco uses a lot of chrome black, white, and primary colors. You're just not going to find a lot of that in wood.
  6. gluing on the fretboard... leveling some frets... attaching some stuff to the pickguard... I was originally going to use a 5-way blade switch and TRY to have the pups wired in pairs to TRY and emulate HBs. I left that one alone thinking that Tiescos always had individual sliders or rockers, so I went that direction instead. It keeps in the theme a LOT better.
  7. I finally decided on the fretboard for the real neck. I found come more canary I forgot I had. This one ended up with some really neat green and orange streaking. Too bad fluorescent lighting blows for pics. FWIW: I finished up the other neck. Well, almost finished, I have it all done except for buffing the wood to 4000, oiling it, and dressing the frets. I tried for a flat Jackson back this time. I'm looking forward to playing it... whenever I get around to making a body for it. Whenever I get the hardware. Whenever I finish up with the 3 guitars I'm working on, the 2 I have planned, and the 5 cabinetry commissions I took last week. So it'll be sitting there for a while.
  8. Before I pulled the trigger on the top, I went back to working on the headstock. First up was the inlay. Cocobolo, goncalo alves, yellowheart, and cherry veneer. Then the headstock.... BIG A$$ ARCHTOP HEADSTOCK!!! I thought it fit the art-deco era pretty well. IIRC, I took it from a D'Aquisto or a D'Angellico.
  9. And if that's the case, why not get 8/4 and 4/4 lumber instead of 16/4 and then cut it down?
  10. Again, the original top. The carve looked pretty good. I was trying to get away without 1) doing a neck angle and 2) buying anything else. To that end, I tried to recess a wraparound t/p and smooth out the edges of the recess. I feel it was as well executed, however..... The more I looked at it, the more I hated it. It not only pointed out but prominently displayed that I can't do a neck angle and was trying to get around it. And that's why I had to plane the whole thing off.
  11. It's good to know I've finally inspired one of you.
  12. purple it's realy rare to see purple quilt or yellow not orange/tiger eye... yellow with a black-burst edge transition
  13. No worries. Thanks for the honest input without being condescending about it.
  14. Even with the smileys, it's sometimes it's really hard to tell if y'all are being genuine or sarcastic. Of course, the bad thing with this "jig" is that it's weather dependent. I know that I sure ain't going out there if it's cold.
  15. That fretboard is awesome, but it's just too narrow. 1/16" strips of canarywood & walnut will take care of that!
  16. This is the original top: bookmached hackberry. I'm pretty disappointed that I had to plane the whole thing off. There were some really interesting colors in there, including some blue! You'll see pretty soon why it had to go.
  17. I'm putting a gold Kahler on mine, and they're not cheap, but I got it for a song from a fellow PG-er. The 3 mini-HBs are from RAD. I'm giving serious consideration to putting the emblem from the '67-'69 Pontiac Firebird on it.
  18. 1) The back isn't shown at all in those last pics. 2) No. I used a pattern I found and adapted it for this purpose. I then used it to scroll saw the pattern into a huge f-hole. I guess that wasnt the back huh? lol I couldnt tell if that was what you did or if that was a decal, very nice work! reference: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=43485
  19. What a coincidence. I'm working on a Firebird as well. Mine won't be so close to the original as yours. Those Steinberger tuners are worth the effort, but they're damn expensive. I'd be putting them on mine if I could afford it.
