Hi all. I have been through the supplier's page and have scoured ebay, and i don't have any local hardwood stores around here, so i'm asking you all what you would recommend doing to find laminates for a neck through. I am planning on a 5 piece maple/x/maple/x/maple neck, and would like something like padauk or purpleheart or a dark wood to provide contrast. I have found some places, but i don't really feel like spending 20 bucks plus shipping for two 1/4 inch thick padauk laminates. Is there any place you know of that i can buy from online that has wood of the correct sizes for a decent price? Thanks in advance. Neal

i'm interested....if the dimensions match a strat or a les paul i'll consider it, especially if it matches the paul copy i have here. I'll let ya know. Neal

uhhhh.....amber led's.....not my thang. I think that the blue's will be ok, and they will only go on as a showoff, so it won't be all that bad. Also, i would love to do a 5 piece neck, but unless i want to destroy about 1" of walnut, i doubt it's happening. Thanks for the input. Neal

any other opinions? suggestions on something you think looks better? For a little more info, the top is going to be flat, not carved, and the cutaways should provide some sharp contrast to that. It looks like the neck will be maple/walnut/maple, maybe i'll get even more creative with it. The frets markers will be blue LED's(thanks for the help daveG) and the finish will probably be tru-oil, unless i fell like going drastic and dying the body red. I just hope i don't embarass myself, and hopefull it will be done by the end of next summer, so that gives me two summers and some time while i'm in school to finish it. I'd like to start building the templates soon, and hopefully i can make this work with my limited array of tools. Thanks all for all the help you have given me. Neal

'tis a good idea skibum.....but i already have the lacewood and don't feel like springing the cash for a quilted top or veneer(i don't like curly, only quilted) Plus, then i'd have to cover up the prtty neckthrough, or make the project much more complicated. JMO. Neal

Hi all. This is a sketch of the body style for my first guitar, going to be started this summer. It was very much inspired by toddler68's in progress guitar. It will be a neckthru with a lacewood body, maple/something/maple laminate neck, rosewood fretboard (22 frets), EMG 81 pickups, and a tune-o-matic bridge with stoptail. no offense to anybody on this board, but i think that this is the BEST guitar i have ever seen in my life. I hope you dont mind that my blueprints for my guitar project copy your flat horn idea. Then, when i had drawn out my headstock, i noticed it's practically the same as yours. DOH!!!! I will us this thread as reference so much it's not even going to be funny. I think this should be entered in GOTM when finished. I love the shape, and the craftsmanship is excellent. Toddler, do you mind if i ask you some questions when i start my build? Hi Matt. I am currently planning a neck-through guitar. Do you have any hardwoods that could be used to make a neck long enough for this purpose? I am thinking something like a maple neck with some laminate(purpleheart maybe) Let me know if you have anything i might be able to use. Thanks. Neal

oh, and i doubt the oils in paintball would be too compatibale with any clear coats. I think your best bet, if you're set on a paintball finish, would be to try it wil paint, it would be easier and better looking i'd bet. Neal

Are you planning on clearing over it? If not, i wouldn't count on a great finish. Paintballs are fish oil, and they are made to wash off clothing, so i doubt the finish would do anything but wipe off on you. If you are going to clear it, you would need to remove all the pieces of the shell/skin of the paintball first. IMO, it's not going to work, but a simulated paintball finish would look good if done well with quality paints. Also, the paint splatter probably will not look that good, it definitetly won't be picture-perfect. JMHO, Neal

wow....hyunsu....you've come a long way. Your guitars have always been impressive, but i'm awed by your work ethic. It shows not only in your guitar building, but your words as well. You have grown tremendously in your english, and your guitars look better every time you make a new one. Keep it up, and i'm sure you'll be doing this at whatever level you'd like, professional or hobbyist. Great job. Neal

this may not be appropriate, but i'd like to say it, ban me or delete the post if you must, but that neck is not fit for sale. While i am not trying to discourage slayer from building, i think selling the neck is unreasonable. The wood is not proper quality, and it is obviously not fit for sale. 50 dollars for a neck like this seems to be absurd to me, especially if it's going to be nearly impossible to come up witha decent product, regardless of the work put in. I have seen many quality builders who will not sell their work until it is perfect, and i think it is spitting in their face to have a newbie come along and sell poor quality work. Members like Maiden69, DaveG, and Metal Matt, among many others, have had a good amount of experience and have produced superb instruments, but do not sell them until their work is near perfect. Now while this is not a personal attack, i think that slayer should not sell this neck, as it is not of the quality to be put up for sale. I think it's great that you're trying to build a guitar, and i encourage that, but i don't feel that it is ready to be sold. Maybe this is because i am feeling terrible about a transaction i made where the buyer was not satisfied with the product and did not feel that it was accurately described. I am currently trying to work out a way to satisfy the customer, and i think that in order to make a transaction, the goods have to deserve the price put on them. If they don't, a customer is left unsatisfied, and i don't believe that anybody would be satisfied with that neck for 50 dollars. JMHO, mods feel free to delete or edit any part of this that you do not find appropriate. Neal

wow, i forgot about this thread.... I ended up buying an Alvarez AJ60SC. This is an acoustic-electric with a piezo pickup. It has maple sides and back with a spruce top. It is a jumbo-size acoustic with a single cutaway. It is GORGEOUS. I have gotten many compliments on having such a nice guitar, though i paid only $240 for it. It lists for well more than that. It plays very well and has a wonderful sound. I would reccomend this guitar to everyone and their brother. For 240, i don't think i could have found another guitar that has more of what i was looking for, BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!! I bought this guitar and i don't plan on buying another acoustic until this one breaks. The preamp is wonderful, it's a fabulous player, and has looks to kill. I think that it is the best guitar i have seen in the price range. JMHO. Neal

i'd love to see some pics of the strat parts, especially the bodies and necks, and some of the parts like bridges/tuners/pickups/pickguards, i could care less about stuff like string trees, knobs, and control covers, but i'd like to see the main parts. thanks, and those EMG's I bought from ya a while back are just waiting for a nice home, maybe an HH Wilkinson equipped Strat with Sperzels Thanks.
