  1. Now that is a tidy instrument! Congratulations on a quality build. Limba is a nifty looking wood and suits the guitar perfectly, reminds me of one of the old Schecters.
  2. Does lacewood come in quite different shades? I noticed the stuff on Warmoth.com is very light but examples i've seen elsewhere are pretty dark... Ho hum. I was thinking an amber, red or orange finish would look pretty nifty on it too. Craft supplies in the UK will sell a 2" thick one piece body for £28.00 ($50USD) thats a pretty good price for such a sexy piece of wood I reckon! Cheers for the advice anyhow! For future reference does anyone know of a supplier in the UK for wood bleach? Can't find any at all!
  3. Pedaltastic! Penguin Love? Thats even better than big muff!
  4. Sure the really low wnd Squiers stink but the older Japanese stuff was fantastic, I've played a Silver Series strat from the 80's and it was easily as good most Fenders, in fact I had a Mexican Tele and it wasn't as well made as the Jagmaster I have now! Give Squiers a break! Apart from the plywood ones, they really do suck.
  5. It's not perfect... but.... I recessed the posts on mine by a couple of mm so that they sit flush with the body and put a slight shim under the neck and the action is pretty much perfect. I did make te neck pocket slightly more shallow than usual though. Angling the neck would be the best option, I just didn't want to make a mess of it after spending a month on the body! Who dares wins!
  6. Craft supplies are really good, I'm only going to get wood from them in the future, they package stuff really well... I do my routing while its still on the block, assuming everything is flat it does make it easier for the neck pocket and things like that as there is no chance of slipping and taking chunks out of the body side. I'll be interested to see how your guitar works out, good luck with it!
  7. I have a beatiful image in my mind of a solid lacewood PRS style body stained a deep green.... mmmm lovely. What I want to know is; does anywone have experience with the stuff? I know it isn't too heavy and is meant to sound a bit like alder.... no bad thing. But how well does it work? I'm hoping it planes and carves well and i'm curious about the kind of finish it will take and wether it will need much grain filling etc as I was hoping for a carved top dyed green and then laquered to a high gloss. Care to share your experiences?
  8. What is the weight like, both the guitars i've made have been from very dense uber heavy wood so i'm after something a bit lighter for "project lizard" wassit like, and of course where did you get it? Looking good by the way!
  9. Yeah, the flames were a bit unlikely really, It would look fantastic but I'd be pretty wound up if I messed it up though, I've got an airbrush that'd make things a lot easier..... Does the tape work well? What was used on the original competition stripe mustangs, tape or paint? I know I can do it with paint but if tape works just as well there is no point bothering. Ho-hum. I should probably just sell it anyways!
  10. £250 doesn't sound unreasonable, what year is it? Have you seen what similar age/spec guitars go for on ebay? It's always a good way to get a pricing estimate!
  11. Yeah, I've noticed a lot of discussion about different masking tapes on here, I did mine ages ago with masking tape (the regular kind) and found that some bits were crispy sharp and others the tape must have lifted slightly... ho hum, anyhow I sold it so thats in the past! Cheers for the advice
  12. Hey! My Jagmaster is getting jelous of its two hand made stablemates and I'm thinking i've got to spruce it up or sell it on.... Spruce wise it's begging for some mean distort 'o' buckers and some cheeky racing stripes, like the mustangs of old! Question is.... Do you tape 'em (and if so what with?) or do you mask and paint them. I have tried painting them before on a cwappy old LP copy and they came out ok but not really sharp.. Anybody have any experience? On a semi related note how easy/hard is it to spray a nifty hotrod flame effect and what is the best way to mask it? Questions question! Cheers!
  13. It is Blocky! You try planing Paduak down! The stuff I've got is REALLY hard! I have some handy hints to share that I hit on while making this pointy beast. 1) Put the jack socket nearer the strap pin, it doesn't get in the way of you leg when playing sat down. 2) Instead of recessing the whole bridge on a stoptail/tune o matic just do the top part of the studs, i've sunk 'em flat to the body and it knocks 2mm off the height, means you need less of an angle or a raised fingerboard. Thanks for all the kind words fellas, i'll take all the negatives on board for any future projects.
  14. Got a Yamaha Pacifica 112 on my sixteenth birthday, great guitar it was to, I've been playing now for seven years and owned probably 12 guitars and basses and you know what? I'm rubbish! I haven't got any better in years! Now I spend more time tweaking and making guitars than playing them! Dumbass me.
  15. Amen to that! Leave all paint for longer than you think you need to before buffing, i'm really guilty of braking that rule! Get all the dust off your guitar with wirewool before painting/staining etc.. Plan it all on paper, all of it! Don't burn all the knuckles on your left hand with a soldering iron like I just did.
  16. Well my confidence has been boosted by all this positive energy so I've entered it into GOTM, I dream of a framed pic of my guitar on the home page of projectguitar.com sad but true. I do wish I'd spent a bit more cash on a better piece of wood for the top, but this is the first time I've tried a lot of different construction methods and I didn't want to ruin the good stuff. I'm already planning a fretless Mosrite inspired Bass, might be time to stick my neck (sic) on the line and build the whole thing. My house is filling with guitars, shame i'm such a rubbish player!
  17. I'm with you on most of the points, I guess I just hadn't thought too much about pickup positions! I'd love to do something better with the neck plate, I was thinking at the very least I could recess it a bit, or use inserts, it doesn't look to hot! Maybe just some washer or something? Who knows! With the finish, i could still get the front more gloss with some extra buffing effort, the back is oil and wax and will never be REALLY shiny, I just like that kind of finish just for ease of repair etc.. I'm incredibly impatient so I think I'll slowly improvew on both the guitars i've made, I have a black ice unit ready to go into one of them. hurr hurr. Cheers for the comments its all very constructive.
  18. This is my blues axe... Finished it on the 16th. Needs a few tweaks but it is road ready. One piece Paduak body, maple top. 2 x Gotoh P90's wrapover bridge. Maple neck, rosewood board and some big o'l sound chambers. I started guitar making in February with no woodworking experience and this is result of my second build, I'm pretty pleased. Thanks to Setch for giving me a helping hand getting the images up and running!
  19. I'm glowing with pride now, double cutaway kings Setch and Myka said my guitar looks nice. Well I think I shall enter it then! Cheers guys!
  20. thanks guys, I've only been able to have a quick go plugged in as I only finished it yesterday afternoon. It's pretty trebletastic, but not overly and I think the chambering helps knock that off a bit. I have to say i'm pretty pleased with this for a second attempt and with so little experience.... Got to have a break from building for a while cos the house is still covered in orange dust and sandpaper and I think the missus is getting a little annoyed! It was originally designed to be a 24 3/4" scale which is why the "f" (or S) hole is higher than usual but when the neck arrived it was totally different to the picture!
  21. Right, Fixed it (I think) Hopefully you can all see it now.. Rock on'! Have another go
  22. Anybody else not able to see what i'm going on about?
  23. I can redo it but when I go there I see two albums, one is the tele thing the other is the new one... Hmmmmm.
  24. Hi guys, You might remember that I made my first guitar a few months ago, a sorta back to front firebird thing made from ash.... well here is the sequel, i've not stopped building since the first one. It's inspired by both the Gibson and Yamaha SG's spec wise it goes a little like this... One piece (very heavy) chambered paduak body, bokkmatched (crappy) flame top, a pair of Gotoh P90's with just the standard wiring config, maple and rosewood neck and a (very) flamed maple backplate! It's not one for the metal fans out there, very bluesy sound... Happy with: The look and sound, plays well too. Would change: If I had the skills/tools i'd make my own set neck, as it is it's a bolt on paddle neck that I modded. At some point a pair of Duncans should go in it, and finally i'd spend some time getting the finish that bit shinier. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about it, and if it's positive I might even enter it for GOTM.... maybe EDIT: Cheers all for the help with the images! I am a doofus
  25. Hi, I've got all my bits from merry olde englande, and I recommend the following spots! Touchstone tonewoods, wd music supplies and my personal favorite (very friendly and cheap!) highly strung. They all have easy to find websites and they are all very friendly. Craft supplies are brilliant as well if you need more wood. Happy shopping!
