  1. I've always liked sharp contours but, gees, i always ended up cutting myself to contrast the light top i'm going to have black hardware. I've already ordered a black wilkinson for it among other things
  2. your both right, it's a little thin because It was my first experience with a band saw I contoured the edge because the top was a little too small but it brought the edge of the quilt out nicely.
  3. This is my first building project, so please, all you guys who have done this 600 times, try not to laugh. it's four piece top (none bookmatched but all from the same plank, it's cost me $1.50) and the seams show. I gotta fill this crack in the top at least I got the monkey grip right (but it's a pain to sand)
  4. thanks for the links. I never think at the time to look through old links.
  5. I have a theoretical question. Say I had a Quilted maple top and i wanted to dye it or some other type of translucent or clear finish. how would I apply it (the dye)? by hand rubbed what do they mean (rubbed in with a rag or actually applied with by hand. What smoothness should I have the wood sanded to? do I have to finish over it with a hard finish? how do I dye it to show depth in the quilt? seems like a lot of questions . I have a body with a quilt maple top and i thought i wanted to finish it natural but all my experimental finishing on scrap hasn't brought the grain out like I wanted it to. I still want to finish it clear but I haven't got it right yet and I'm getting impatient. also, how do I fill in the cracks without it showing too much. any answers wouild be much appreciated
  6. yeah right... spend $100 on monster cables and have no money for a good guitar. i think it really doesn't make a big difference. drak's right just play your guitar. gees, Can I do a review on picks and pick holders?
  7. I can't really chose becasue I have or have had a Fender, epiphone, Washburn, Yamaha, Ibanez. Currently I have a Epi LP Goth, two Strats, a Washburn BT (man love those and i don't who why) and Ibanez acoustic. i love them all but I've taken everyone apart with the exception of the acoustic and altered them in some way. Maiden go for that SG or G400 whatever it called. I considered buying that before I bought the LP. ivory is just not my color though
  8. I'm from Maine (where?). Which is NOT part of New York! where the cows outnumber the people. Really though, it's a great place (if you ignore all the libs)
  9. you mean a sustainer in the front? well, this is the tricky part. I could do that but they (sustainiac) said they would want a mini humbucker to install with it. I don't know if they'll do EMG pickups (even thought they are all dual coil) I guess I could ask.
  10. i'm building a Jem style guitar (I'll start as soon as I get some shop time) but I've been wondering about a pickup configuration. I'm going to use EMG pickups but I can't decide on a configuation. I'm thinking of putting a sustainer in too. i like too be weird so a couple of pup configs I've come with are HHS (s angled like the stephen carpenter ESPs), HXS, and SXS (bridge angled). I've also thought about a HxH with an 89 in the front and a 81 in the bridge. anyone had experience the 89? Then there's the HHH but that gets expensive with all the other stuff. all thought and suggestions are welcome because at this point, I'm going crazy
  11. I've hadexperience with samshin. Mine were stock on a Washburn BT-2 I bought a while ago. I don't know if they the same as yours but they were pretty good for OEM product in that price range. I still have them but they sit with all my other stock pup that I replaced I don't know what model it is. I say if you don't want to go out and get expensive pickups go for it.
  12. I also recommend EMG's. I have a guitar sitting around right now waiting for a white EMG-S (stupid special orders!).It has one only EMG-SA in it. I like strat tones but use the hybrid approach (two pups arranged tele style). The pro series is a good way to go (but does anyone think that ivory on white pearloid look stupid?) I have the EXG in my guitar but didn't notice too much of a difference. maybe it's just me. just took some texas specials out of my strat and I think they were ok. If never tried laces but I thought about them before going with the EMGs. I still think EMG's are the best. but that's my opinion. It's your guitar you do what you want.
  13. i was wondering if anyone knows (and someone has to know) what is the scale length on the Ibanez Jem777 neck is? I have template for the body and i want to make sure I have the right size neck.
  14. so there's a VS and an AVT series. oh, i get it Valvestate and Advanced Valvestate Technology
  15. i thought was basically the pot form of the preamp booster. I did like the whole push pull deal. i just wanted a switch.
  16. hmmmm that's unusual but that's alright
  17. the valvestate series was introduced in the early 1990s as a alnternative to solid state amps and expensive tube amps. This unique amp are a hybrid, having a single 12AX7 tube in the preamp with power stage being solid state. this allows most of the tonal response of a tube amp while not having to replace power amp tubes and not getting the 'cold' sound of a solid state amp. I have a marshall AVT100 but I've never heard of the 80 watt version. it's been popular as a cheaper marshall for those who can't afford the more expensive ones and it's more popular than their MG solid state series because the Mg's are problematic and unreliable. hope that helpsa little
  18. B.c. rich makes a couple guitars that have a headstock with just the logo on it (no tuners or tuner holes) and the strings feed through the nut to the trem. I'm not a fan of headless guitars but i consider this a viable alternative.
  19. yeah, thanks. both sustainers on the market i've seen are magnetic but i don't think i'm smart enough to contribute so don't mind me
  20. or just get new one (after all, one one really likes to see a guitar with empty pickup holes) Delonge has the simple approach i like: 1 pickup one volume. May I suggest getting an EMG preamp booster to go with the duncan or gibson to give you an onboard boost when needed. In a couple weeks they'll be easier to find but they cost somewhere between $25 and $30. i consider it the better alternative to a tone control. It works with passive pickups. anyway... it's your guitar.
  21. I'm too lazy to read all twelve pages of this thread so I don't know if this has come up. is it possible (in the fernandes model sustainer system) to change the just pickups or are they special pickups made just for the sustainer system?
  22. Thanks. I found one that was exactly what I was envisioning. It was a TL60. but now i'm doubtful of the abalone inlay on the body. maybe the neck (once I find out the grade of quilt for the body top all ask Warmoth about necks). I was thinking a quilt maple neck with a Macassar ebony or stiped ebony fingerboard (but the abalone would kill on the ebony fingerboard) if you don't know what i'm talking about, look on the Warmoth showcase. They have a pair of all mac. ebony bass necks with abalone dots (makes me wish i played bass more). but anyway i'm rambling... thanks to all for suggestions and ideas. i've all but decided on a Jem style (or 777, RG whatever you want to call it) and i have a few questions (better to ask here than post new threads every which way). monkey grip or no..... pickup config (anything cept SSS) and what is the standard jem scale neck. i want make sure that there is equall amount of distance from nut to 12th fret and 12th fret to bridge.
  23. you can get band decals on the internet if that's an option. there's bunch of sites, you just have to weed through the car decal ones (even some of those have them too). of course, this all depends on whether the bands you like are popular.
  24. I don't know about clear tinted but I do know that WD can make a clear acrylic pickguard for you but they gouge you pretty bad for it. you also will probably have to send them a tracing.
