  1. that's what I was thinking. my problem with guitars is that I'm obsessed with making sure visually everything goes together perfect.Case in point, I always hated the way fender does a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. at least put a headcap on the headstock or finish the neck like Gibson does. anyway....
  2. I've found that places that don't post their prices on EMGs have them cheaper because EMG won't let them advertise that low. I think warmoth is the way to go (I like GPD too, though). funny thing about warmoth is that asked about their EMG single coil size and the HZ were more expensive than the actives?!!!! the HZs were like 75 but the actives were 67!! my guess is that you won't find anything cheaper than Warmoth. however, EMGs are under manufacturer warranty if you buy them from GPD.
  3. thank you for all your comments and suggestions. I'm sorry i wasn't very clear. i have a tendency to get ahead of myself and skip things. i was planning on a clear finish. only on more question.... chrome or black hardware? some may suggest gold but gold always gave me the impression that the guy who owned a guitar like that has a lot of money but can't play worth beans. nonetheless i guess that's an option too. I'm looking at RG or Firebird style body, suggestions on that too, please
  4. here's question for all you finishing geniuses. if you use dyes to show the depth of a quilt top than what should be used to show the depth in clear finish. I don't know alot about finishes i'm normally an electronics guy. also, would a paua abalone inlay look good on a maple quilt top body? thanks.
  5. thanks guys. my car stereo needs to go soon so I can try that and I'll check the hobby shop too
  6. I've tried a Super 3 and I liked it because it threw my amp into a dirty o/d but the EMG 85/81 is miles ahead of anything I've ever tried. and the EMG's are low (actually i'd say no) noise.
  7. that's an excellent idea if I go with passive pickups. Maybe I could use two jacks and just drill a wider hole from the recess for the jack to the control cavity for easy switching of jacks along with the guards. i wonder if I could use an XLR for the active jack.
  8. I got this Idea the other day becasue I'm always wanting to change the pickup configuration in my guitars but I hate resoldering and stuff. What if I had a jack with a two or three pin connector (hot, ground, batt. feed) in the body cavity to quick change between prewired pickguards? Kind like the EMG pickups but one step further. And where could I get male/female connectors to fit this sort of application. Thanks for your input.
  9. have the goth and I love the matte finish. I have a agree with wilson, swamp ash is on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to mohagany/maple (but that grain filler does look good. I've actually seen reveiws that say the LP Goth is better than the Voodoo. just a side note, in the XII inlay on the Goth, the X and outside I are MOP but the middle I is abalone.
  10. I like their acrylic stuff but I don't really like the body styles (only the mockingbird style). I wish some other big guitar company would make acrylics.
  11. I was wondering where hendrix was along with Clapton, SRV, and Jeff Beck (not to mention half of all serious guitarist playing Duncans use his signature pickup (JB) and also MR. BB king, Johnny winter. and EVH (how could you hear Eruption and not put him on the list). but out of those listed I went with Vai. I'd say you should have a fav guitarist for every genre like Alternative- Corgan, Cobain, McCready..., Metal- KK, Hammett, Munkey... 70s Rock- Hendrix, Page....80s rock- Slash, Young... Blues- BB king, Winter, SRV...like that
  12. I'd have to say other (altenative = grunge) but I also like Blues, mod. metal, classical, and punk.
  13. The only problem I have from going mild to wild is that I don't like the mild so I'd just leave it wild. Just my opinion. If you mean coil-tapping The EMG 89 humbucker comes with its own pots and jack, but I can't think of any single coil pickups that are tapped. If you mean coil splitting all that you need is a 4 conductor humbucker. I know DiMarzio humbuckers come with coil splitting, phase reversal, and dual sound instructions (but ironically no instructions on how to connect wires to pot and jack.)
  14. Ibanez PF5 acoustic stargazer (cheap acoustic) 2 Candy apple red Squier Strats (one currently undergoing a transformation to a tele wannabe in a strat body) Washburn BT2 epiphone LP Goth
  15. I 'd suggest a Ibanez PF5. I bought it from MF (although I'll agree it's not smart to buy a guitar you have never played) but I love it. It plays great and the action for an acoustic guitar is really good (but I also put electric strings on it for easier bending. I think the coolest thing about this guitar is that it has abalone inlays on the headstock. I also have to agree with the Yamaha. A Yamaha sojourned inmy posession for about two years. I bought the Ibanez after i gave the Yamaha back.
  16. oh and while I'm at it, how do I wire the two pickups so they can be in series and parallel.
  17. Not to mention that selects are made in korea or someplace in asia. So the $150 question is what, if not EMG-HZs. I don't really want a rail pickup. i've never tried SDs and i've only tried diMarzio humbuckers. What about fender lace sensor pickups?
  18. anyone had experience with the EMG-HZ line? I've only used their active pickups. More specifically, anyone used the single coil HZs? I have another project that includes a pair of single coils (maybe a pair of S3s or an S3 and S4) rear routed in a strat, tele style (like the ritchie blackmore strat). again, I'm open to other suggestions too. i'm wiring this one volume/3 way/preamp booster.
  19. p-90s. huh, never tried them. good for grunge? who makes 'em beside Gibson? Seymour duncan? i know EMG has a p-90 housing but that's still basically the humbucking version.
  20. i wouldn't call it physics because I'm not smart enough to get physics. i like to call it electronics.
  21. I'll try to give you a short rundown (anyone feel free to correct me if I err.) a pickup is basically a coil of wire wound around or over a magnet. the magnet set up an magnetic field through which the strings vibrate. The pickup translates the vibrations into electric signals and sends them to the amplifier (usually with a volume and tone and crap between to tweak the signal.) single coil refers to one coil of wire. double coil (usually refered to as a humbucker) is two coil wired in series but with different polarities to eliminate hum (well, in theory.) I don't exactly how they tweak pickup to make them suitable for different styles but I know of two things they often change. The magnet is usually Alnico (aluminium, nickel, cobalt) or ceramic. Ceramic magnets generally give a brighter sound with more pronounced treble used for rock among other things. Alnico magnets give more a warmer sound because it has more bass and midrange and are closely associated with that 'classic sound'.there are also 'rare earth' magnets (commonly made of Samarium) but I dont know much about those. The magnet in the pickup usually comes in two forms: slugs and bar. Slugs are individual polepieces for each string. Bar magnets span across the pickup. the disadvantage of slugs to bar magnets is that when you bend, slugs won't pick up the signal and you get volume drop off or break up. hope that's not too much (and i hope it's all accurate.)
  22. i'm hot-rodding my brother's precision style bass. I've had no experience with bass pickups so I don't know which kind is best. I've considered Seymour Duncan, EMG, bartolini, and Razor but I don't know which one to get. i'm inclined to get and emg pickup because that's the kind that I prefer for guitar. He likes to play heavy stuff (and he's pretty good at faking) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I need input about EQ and booster controls too.
  23. I use it on all my other guitars and i think it works great....even when you use it for stuff your not suppose to
  24. well I thought that the fast part of it would help the neck. anyways it's more like the side of the neck where the neck and the fingerboard meet.
