  1. ernie ball makes some bases with metalic sunbursts
  2. on rec.music.makers.guitar.builders or whatever its called Melvyn Hyscock(sp) and Seymore Duncan were always entertaining and informative!
  3. Weren't some of the original Fenders made from pine? I remember reading that somewhere, maybe uncle mel's book?(which should be the faq's for this type of discusion) For the most part the woods we use now are bassed on tradition, so try something new. Fender mostly choose woods, from what i hear, for price and convience. Iv'e seen all sorts of stuff in my pawn guitar shop journeys, Oak Ibanez's etc...
  4. ever watch an electric motor spark, especially one thats not tuned and broken in. I race electric rc cars and we spend a considerable amount of time and money over this issue.
  5. wouldnt the fumes from some paints and a hair dryer end up causing more of a burnt finish on you your shop and possible other insurance/legal complications? :o Sparks from electric motors and anything combustible is bad , add the heat of the hair dryer and i see a possible complication?
  6. alright years of pawn shop scrounging has finally started to pay off.... scored a Digitech Wh-1(whammy) last night for $100. Its sooo cool, and valued crazy on ebay. Ill have to play with a reissue to see if its worth picking up a reissue and selling. other than that it was my yamaha drop 6 baratone(currently taking a pit stop for a rewire/repaint) anyways whats your best pawn shop/yard sale score.
  7. Im not talking about faking inlays w/ vinyl. Im talking about masking your route with one peice and using the vinyl you removed to put in the routes like some of the jems do.
  8. I have a buddy who owns a vinyl cutting machine and am thinking of starting a joint venture with him. Basically we would cut vinyl graphics for guitars. They could be used a few ways. 1. Dont have the money for refinish, add vinyl flames of tribal logos etc... (could be offered generically and specificaly for guitars like the rg) 2. Paint masks for complex designs, much the way Rc car painters use them. 2.5 Leave them in place before you clear coat? 3. Im not sure but it seems like you could use them to help with inlays. A peice of vinyl with the vine on it laid on the board to mark all your cuts instead of masking it. Using the cut out parts to lay in what youv'e cut and possibly to template your acrylic. People could also request custom one off's or exclusive masks for a set up fee. Would you buy them, and what would you pay? I think im going to work on some samples to trade him for a guitar hes been wanting. Maybe its my excuse to buy the PRS 5 pack from Brian. Let me know what you think, nothings for sale yet. If it happens there will definitley be intro rates and project guitar specials. John
  9. heres whats got to go: Line 6 Flextone II w/ latest Chip Line 6 POD w/ Latest Chip Line 6 Floorboard. Would really only like to sell the floor board if it goes w/ the pod or the amp. Make reasonable offers. Im in Las Vegas, NV 89117 zip so use that to estimate shipping, or an excuse to come to Vegas.
  10. If you have an opportunity check out Melvyn Hyscocks Build Your Own Electric Guitar book, he has a bit of detail on his method, and some wacky british humor to boot. He was quite the help in the guitar building news group i used to read.
  11. one of my fav guitars is my parker nitefly because the graphite fret board rocks... just my opinion. if you have a chance play a parker to get an idea for the fretboard feel.
  12. gotta love spraying silver. no matter what type of paint it is it seems the hardest to spray. probably due to the metalic composure
  13. Its a cool wood ive wanted to try for awhile. Finally the project came up. A Yamaha RGX420 Drop 6. Its there copy of an RG only 26.25". Anyways I havent stripped the old finish yet but was wondering if anyone here has any experience or suggestions. Ill try to take pics to post along the way.
  14. Check it out: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=03.../base_id/103690 I figured they were at least worth trying. Mine should get here today. It may be a bit untill ive got them installed. The guitar I bought them for is a pawn shop Yamaha Drop 6(26.25 scale). It has a nasty flat black checked ewe finish. I just got some lacewood veneer for it. So they wont go in untill it is stripped and refinished.
  15. The guitar Im looking at using em in i just ordered the new high output lace sensors for. Its a cool deal at musicians friend btw. 2 lace sensors for $29 bucks.
  16. anybody tried these things. Stew Mac sells them for about $30.00. And I saw this one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5&category=2384 Are they just caps? if so anyone know the value. I can see where a cap could be used for clipping, sort of. thanks John
  17. The pactra paints come in spray cans. The Parma paints do not. I really like the Parmas though because they are watter based.
  18. Go to your local hobby shop. they have paints us rc nuts use for lexan. my fav is the fascolor.(waterbased airbrush paints). its made by parma. the pactra paints are cool too.
  19. can you also get the bass kits?
  20. dig the inlays. its cool to see a new version of an old theme
  21. i dont know if its exactly the same but i recently did a saga tele kit in this http://www.duplicolor.com/products/mirage.html its pretty cool, i rushed it a bit but its still pretty cool. only cost 20 bucks for the primer the color change layer and thier clear coat in 1 kit. Micheals crafts sells a similar kit and if you watch your sunday paper they always have 40-50% off coupons. im intrested to see how it works without their base coat. i saw a greenish les paul in the Hollywood GC this weekend that looked like it was done that way. john
