  1. i don't own one, but i've played one for hours at a local shop. it is one beastly guitar. the fret access with that bolt on design is amazing, and if i'm remembering the right guitar, the tremolo was cool too. split into two pieces, so you could dive 1/2 the strings and not the others.
  2. alright i guess i'll fill it then. thanks for the help.
  3. i'm gonna have a friend paint on an alder guitar body when i get it some time next week. i'll prime it first, and then he'll use acrylic paint, and i'll clear coat over it. should i fill the grain before i prime it?
  4. yah the satch whistle (usually called the satch scream) is just an open string pinch harmonic and the whammy bar. usually on the G or B string. i'm gonna agree with saying it was probably a coil tap.
  5. i don't like that headstock design. it looks like something you'd find on a cheap tele copy.
  6. i realize that building a guitar isn't going to save me money. this isn't something i want to do to save money, it's something that seems fun to me. i'm kinda lucky, in that my dad has done some woodworking. i have almost all the tools i'll need already. one thing that i don't have that i'd like to is a band saw, but for this first one i'm going to try to make do with a coping saw. we've got a router, planer, spokeshave, various files, a table saw, a belt sander and more i don't even know about. i'm figuring on about $100 for the wood. i'm buying a body blank from carvin for $50, and a possibly a neck blank from stewmac ($40?).
  7. i've started buying some of the stuff i'll need for my first build from scratch, and i'm wondering what a reasonable budget for the whole thing would be. how much do you guys usually spend per guitar?
  8. well i agree that bc rich's widow headstock looks cool, but it'd look totally out of place on a "normal" shaped guitar. if he's considering a tele headstock, i'm guessing the rich won't fit with the design.
  9. the shapes are actually copyrighted along with the names. that's why you can't find any strat copies with real strat headstocks. that said, it's fine to have your guitar made with a tele headstock. fender doesn't care about one custom guitar being made with their headstock. they care if a company is mass producing guitars with it.
  10. even another free hosting site would be better. 20m is one of the better ones. and if you have a friend who's better with computer stuff (as in knows how to use HTML) have him design it for you. that's some nice stuff man. i wish i could do that.
  11. hipshot makes some nice hardtails.
  12. what tools are needed for inlaying? i've seen projects online where they used a dremel tool. i don't have a dremel tool, so i'm wondering what the usual tools are.
  13. yah i really can't see tube amps going away. digital amps keep getting better and better, but there's still no substitute for real tube tone.
  14. yah they have some tasty time sig changes, and my god that guy can scream.
  15. yah meshuggah rock. them and vai are my inspiration for trying an 8 string.
  16. how are you planning on building the rest of the guitar with $14?
  17. www.stewmac.com you can get a maple neck blank for like $30.
  18. use the fret calculator. i can't see a reason why it won't work. if you take your fingerboard and measure out from the nut all the frets, won't you get a good idea of how long the neck is going to need to be? hint: the neck and fingerboard will end at the same point.
  19. i suspected that, but you can never be sure. there are some people out there who just don't get things. i rarely go over 19 or 20 on my 24 fretter, but it's nice knowing that you can if you need/want to.
