  1. Dave as well! That looks way classy! @the corvus, couldn't vote for it as it would be supporting the enemy (Looks great though, love the finish) (edit): I think it's quite different in shape to the original though, in a good way. Cheers
  2. I think I'll go with the original plan of using maple vineer as an inlay, as wood always has a less cheesy more classy/natural feel. One question regarding this though. What should I use to fill up the layer above the maple? I heard epoxy resins turn yellow quite quick. I'm not sure this would be a problem though as I'm staining the maple dark red. Thanks in advance...
  3. I must say i totally agree with you on that! except there are a few problems with that idea... The wood simply has to many worm holes, which made me simply screw the templates to the body as I was gonna paint it black anyway. This created more holes. Basically to many things I need to use filler on, hard to make unnoticable. To bad indeed, as I love the looks of the wood!
  4. Darn I just realized that as well! that's pure coincidence, to bad I'm painting the guitar black. I could still make a change of plan as there is only one wormhole in that area. Perhaps I could do the back of the neck and the middle clear as with a neck through.
  5. The neck is slowly getting there. The shaping went a whole lot faster then I expected and turned out to be one of the easier things on this build. Of course this doesn't guarantee this being a good neck, but I hope so! It 'll be a bit fatter then the factory necks I have but I want to play it safe for the first neck. Once the neck is glued in place I'm going to make the neck joint more ergonomic and seemingly more one piece with the body. Excuse the pore picture taking: (the fretboard is not glued yet, I just layed it on for shows. The rear pickup will have a black cover as wel, this is just a trick of mine to keep the neck and bridge pickup seperated)
  6. This project is a great learning experience for me. Basically a lot of things are going wrong, but I won't bother you with them. Most important thing learned: create neck pocket first. I'll manage, but will be a lot quicker next time 'round.
  7. Thanks for all the tips guys! Still haven't made a choice, but that will come. Cheers
  8. I got some work done! I did the bevels, en am now shaping the neck. The belly curve is also done, but forgot to take a pic. I know this must be a ridiculous question, but here goes: a single action U channel trussrod, which side faces up? Basically this determines whether the neck curves round or hollow. Basically my intuition tells me the strings are going to pull the neck hollow so the rod should be inserted in a manner that enables the neck to go straight and when tightened more, round.
  9. I have a fretboard laying around of that stuff. Unluckily it's not as red as the name suggests. Thanks for the suggestion though. Cheers
  10. Hey, I'm thinking of doing something new on my coming build. Basically the idea is to do an inlay in my ebony fretboard, looking like runners of blood probably bunching up at frets as the 5th and 7th. It might sound strange with such an outspoken idea, but I want this to be subtle and not stopsign red or anything. An idea a friend of mine came up with is to inlay highly figured maple veneer, and staining it darkred. This because highly figured maple can look like a fluid. I like this idea, but I have some doubts as for example: Is there veneer figured enough to have the liquid effect in the long but skinny area of a blood runner. Another is what to use to fill up the space above the vineer, I heard epoxy based stuff goes yellow real quick. Another idea I just came up with is using scrap tortoise pickguard material, but this might be a bit to brownish for blood. All ideas and comments are welcome! Cheers
  11. Yeah, I geuss that's what I should have done though I'm not sure that's fully possible with my design as it's a set neck, and the pocket extends into the pu cavity. I created a centerline before starting any routing and such, but darn it's difficult to make exact meausurements. Everytime I think I measured correct and I draw lines they're of by a bit. The cavities are fully in line with each other, so that's at least a good thing.
  12. I've been a bit stupid in my planning, I realized this as soon as I did the pickup cavities. I should have done the neck pocket first as this will be deeper then the pickup cavities. The reason I should have done this is that the neck pocket will also be deeper then the routerbit. The bearing won't be supported on the deeper run in the cavity area, so now I'll have to fill up or find a longer bit.. Bit complicated to explain something actually quite simple, but I guess most of you will get it. Howsomdever, I'll get there one way or another. Cheers
  13. Yeah at that, I'm curious. Does it balance? True John's looks great but so does yours Narc. The only thing I'm not sure about is the finish, but overall impression is cool. Body is up till now very tight, so no problems on that. On the neck, I don't have all the tools, but I'm gonna get the profile sawed by someone, so I can get at it with spokeshaves and surforms (also a first). The fretting I'm also going to leave to a pro, but he offered me to watch and learn which is a great thing (and for a reasonable price, he doesn't charge extra for the teaching). And now I'll quit spamming your topic! Cheers
  14. Jeez that's quick! And nice results too! I'm making slow progress on my body, but still have an entire neck (my first) to carve. Guess mine will be on the edge of the deadline or over. Great to see the other contestants finish though! Gives more motivation to get to work.
  15. I'm now filling up the wormholes! Hope this doesn't lower the acoustic features of this guitar . Lucky I don't want a clear finish on this.
  16. No for real, I came up with the idea before anyone even mentioned it.. check first post. Not that it really matters it's just logical anyway.
  17. Slight progress! I did the rear rout for the tuners: The router bit once, visible at the yellow spot on the detail. In real life it looks quite clean, but somehow the blurryness of the pic doesn't do it justice.
  18. Those look like something I'd lick instead of play licks on!! Are those the gibson Iommi signature pups? I always loved the looks of those, but heard some negative stuff as well.
  19. Lot's of progress (for me at least) Body sawed, routed along the template and sanded to final shape! The bevelling is still to be done and work on the neck is still to be commenced.
  20. Hahaha poor Avenger. And ae3 you do have a point! (edit) I do have a headstock but it won't have enough room, as it's gonna have a hole in it so I can hang it on the coat rack.
  21. Haha, that's another thing that is not part of the plan anymore! (the bloody corvus logo). Now I plan on doing something more subtle and more cool on the fretboard, but I want it to be a surprise But your idea is cool indeed! Maybe we should.
  22. Progress, Well kind of... I got wood today! Plans have changed multiple times already, the original plan was: Mahogany neck through with mahogany wings. This changed to mahogany with glued in Indian rosewood neck. Since the rosewood blanks at LMII arrive at september it won't make the deadline, so now the guitar will be: Body - Black Korina Neck - Glued in Maple Fingerboard - Still ebony I chose Korina over Mahogany, as I could get it dirt cheap as opposed to mahogany. The slab of wood cost me 25 euro as it has a split on the side (which I can work around without trouble).
  23. I reckon this problem is similar with indian rosewood? I ordered a neckblank of the stuff yesterday.
  24. Wow cool! Another contender. I'm curious to how the pin stripes will turn out, sounds like a great finish. Cheers
