Hi guys. Sorta hijacking this thread. I'm currently building a six-string bass. I'm gonna do the nut myself for the first time. I'm thinking of going with equal gap, but I have no idea as to what string spacing is appropriate. I want the string spacing to be tight, similar to a vintage jazz bass. I can't seem to find the dimensions I need. What equal gap measurements do you advise?

The trussrod in place. The headstock roughly surformed to thickness: The fretboard is now clamped to the neck, waiting for the glue to dry. The pic of that somehow failed, but you'll see the results pretty soon anyway.

Hmm I like the more traditional feel of the original. Nothing wrong with the mockup idea though, I just like traditional shapes more

Hand sawing the fretboard up to size. Thanks. Shouldn't tell you this, but the reason the 12th has three and the higher fretmarkers two, is that I accidentally while forgetting to think, centerpointed two dots on the 15th fret. So I ended up doing a couple more

Sawing the two body halves: The result: The other half is the same, so no use in taking a picture. Tomorrow I'll start routing the inner channels (the ones that will be sandwiched between the halves). Also I might rout the channel for the trussrod and fix myself a template for the headstock.

Hi Guys, It's been quite a while. I'm back (I hope) So there I was, a guitar player that wanted to be able to record some bass playing along to his creations. The goal of this project is the making of a bass that is easy to build, low on costs but high on mojo. Mojo in this case coming from some decent quality parts and build materials. Things that make it cheap and quick to build: Just one pup No frets Body wood: bamboo, I had some leftovers Neck: Maple with some rosewood Tuners: Oldschool nickel Schallers Bridge: Wilkinson with brass saddles Finishing: None, except for some tru-oil on the neck most likely Pickup: Not sure yet, but to start of I have an '80's (i think) active Ibanez set of 1 j-bass and 1 p-bass A mockup of what it might end up like looking: The Materials including the template, but excluding the neck blank (because I forgot to put it in the pic): Because the guitar is just a tad to big to get out of the bamboo I have, I've adjusted the lower (used to be upper) horn as such:

That demo sounds better then I expected! The cab story: interesting. I currently use a 2x12 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's. But doesn't going smaller surpass my goal of making peoples trousers come of with heavy bass? I have a 1x10 but it sounds like empty crap in comparison. In any case, using one of those 2watters on bright setting with full gain and full volume and high treble settings whilst using my TT through another cab with a ballsy bass heavy setting (using a signal splitter) might get something near what I'm looking for.

Which is something I haven't been able to try out (because the 15 watts of the tiny terror are extremely loud)

What I actually mean to ask is does pushing the powertubes make a significant difference? Significant enough to spend money?

Is it going to make a lot of difference in sound when I push the power tubes of my tiny terror to the max and use an attenuator?

Thanks for the replies. Vox nighttrain: nah, I have the Tiny Terror which is in my humble ears a bit better sounding then the nighttrain. Also I think the orange comes closer to the sound I'm looking for. Thanks for the attenuator tip. I will look into that for sure! Another thing is that it has to be slightly affordable and my preference goes out to old vintage stuff. Does anyone have any 'secrets' as in: unknown vintage amp brands that sound killer? An amp I'm looking into is a Hohner Orgaphon, I'm in love with the looks and the clean sound but doubt it will do the sludge/drone sounds. I want to sound something like this: The problem is: This guy uses I believe 5 Sunn amplifiers and two ancient Orange's at the same time. haha. (the dirt kicks in at around 2 minutes) I'm not sure what I'm looking for actually exists

Hey guys, I'm looking for an amp to ad to my collection and was wondering if you have any tips. It has to be a tube amp and needs to work well on lower volume settings. That is where the problems start, because the amp sound I'm looking for comes from amps that are loud enough to blow up a country. I'm looking for a stoner/sludge/drone sound. Most bands that play anything like the sound I'm looking for play Sunn amps, early (matamp built) Orange, Sound City 100, etc. I currently own an Orange Tiny Terror (equipped with JJ tubes for now). I'm happy with it, but I want to play around with multiple amps and switching between amps (clean / dirt).
