  1. Well, its the neck that is spanish cedar. Weird, huh? http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElect...Melody%20Maker/ I really love that Melody Maker headstock though. I might have to make one for myself. Cedar, while being soft, is faily stiff and should resist bending/warping (like spruce, right?).
  2. There's another photo pushing me towards the robo sander. Man, that had to hurt like a punch to the gut!
  3. I noticed that Gibson was using Spanish Cedar on their Melody Makers. How much is it per bf? Where can I find some?
  4. Drak, My friend Steve Rowen at Pigtail Music designed the original tone pros intonatable wrap around and he's improved upon the design and sells his own. It's lower profile than the Tonepros and its made out of aluminum. He also said something about some saddles he's working on to give it the same break angle as a 50's Jr? Anyway, check him out, his stuff is real good (many people swear by it on the Les Paul forum). I have one on a LP Jr. type guitar. Of course, I gets mine for free (I do his website), but anyway. You can also get his wrap around at Stew-Mac and I think Allparts? Tom Anderson's using the bridge on his new Atom series and Spector is using them on their new guitar lnie.
  5. Yeah, instead of gay, you should have used the term "flaming"! LOL Do we really need the ultra political correctness? I'm sure he didn't mean to offend those of you of the homosexual persuasion. It's not like he sewed a pink triangle to your clothes or anything. Sheesh.
  6. Put chambers in it to lighten up the tone and the weight. GuitarGuy, your opinion is probably correct if you play high gain music with a Floyd Rose equipped guitar and EMG pickups. However, when I play two vintage type strats and all their parts are the same except for the wood types, how do you explain the tonal differences?
  7. That is pretty cool stuff, thanks for the help Frank! Although, I think I'm looking at spending about $80 (at least). That's all right, if it turns out, it'll be worth it. I'm going with a brown dyed back and sides with natural binding and a amber top. Which of those colors would fit in best?
  8. Thanks for the ideas guys. This guitar is a Gibson bluesbird copy. Poplar back, 1/4" maple top. I screwed up (majorly) routing pickups, so I've patched the routes and am glueing a very thin birdseye veneer on. There are f-holes, and I've figured out how to locate them under the veneer (use a very small pin as a probe), but If I could find some way to use a very thin plastic layer as a substrate, it would give me a purfling look around the edge of the guitar side and around the f-holes. I think it would be very cool. Here is a link to something similar from Warmoth: Warmoth Pinstripe Accent What I'd like to do is have a slightly thicker piece made out of shell. Hmm. just had a thought, what about copper sheeting for this layer? Or Aluminum? Might not look too bad, but I'd still prefer shell.
  9. I'm gluing on a birdseye maple veneer to hide some mistakes on a guitar I'm making and I thought it would be cool to have a line of Mother of Pearl or Paua Shell under the veneer. How would I go about doing this?
  10. I've heard about guys building a wooden box with a lightbulb and a little fan in it. Its a drying box and helps paint cure. You'd want to wait until the paint was dry to the touch and then finish it up in the box.
  11. *** are you talking about crafty? Napoleon Dynamite is a great movie! What's your idea of a great movie? Terminator? Beaches? Ha ha ha... Cool project by the way. I think it is a great way to get your stuff together. You should even finish it like a real guitar. I would also suggest using Mandolin frets. I think you can get everything we've been talking about at stew-mac.com.
  12. Also, if you try to replace the pickups, don't expect the wiring diagram to work. You need to come to a general understanding on how guitar pickups are wired. You shouldn't have to have anything color coded, you should be able to wire it all up even if all the wires were the same color. Have you been to guitarnuts?
  13. I would contact sperzel if I were you. I bet they sell replacement thumbscrews. The thumbscrew is the only piece on the tuner that could really get lost.
  14. Wow, this was hard. I picked Godin's guitar, becuase if these guitars were hanging on a store's wall, his would be the first one I picked up. However, I'd probably want to take them all home. Good work guys!
  15. Drill the dowel holes into your neck and have the dowels connecting neck and body. That would be pretty cool. I've also thought about sinking the screws and putting caps over them.
  16. Both guitars look awesome. I really like both of them. Looking forward to seeing them finished.
  17. Hmm... I've been wanting to do a LP Jr. type of guitar out of Korina with a claro walnut top. This would be cool as a one piece guitar (obviously top and fretboard would be additional pieces). One design issue that will be difficult is getting the neck angle right.
  18. What moisture level? Would that get me below the 12% mark? (thanks for the advice by the way, I've been wanting to experiment with stuff like this)
  19. Where did you get that hammer? I've been trying to find a fretting hammer locally, but haven't had much luck at menard's or home depot. Great job on this guitar by the way. It's coming out very nice.
  20. I've heard great things about the Fender Nocaster pickups. Fender makes some pretty good aftermarket pickups.
  21. What would the temperature have to be in a home-made kiln?
  22. I've purchased from this guy before, and other than only taking money orders or cash, he was pretty good to deal with. He shipped fast and things were well packed. I would honor the deal, if I were you.
  23. You could also rig up a wood or plastic piece to hold a regular single coil but that would cover the rest of the route.
  24. Just say no to crack, please. Just kidding. It can't be any worse than lucite.
