  1. I got a bass body off ebay around December. Before I knew any knowledge of guitars I thought I could just stick any neck on it (silly me, but im noob haha). The body is a lotus, LPS/Ibanez GAX sort of shape. Anyways the neck I need is a 32 inch scale, and for 6 months of looking on ebay I've had no luck at all. I've seen fenders like mad and the occasional EB0. I've decided to just start to build my own. I was thinking of using a walnut neck with an ebony fretboard or perhaps a bloodwood fretboard. Reason why I'm using walnut is mainly because I'm on a strict tight budget and thought it would be useful to use the gigantic tree that fell in my yard almost crushing my neighbours house. My questions are; Can any wood work with any wood? Like Walnut work with Bloodwood? I know Walnut can work with Ebony (thanks Dr.Jabsco). How would I go about prepareing the walnut - I'd have to cut a big enough limb off but would I have to shape it to a block and let it sit for a few days? Would I have to shape it from a specific part of the limb, such as cut more towards the centre rather than the outside? Any help is appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Also, if you know of any sites that sell 32 inch scale premade necks that would be good too incase I fail misserably haha. -Jamie
  2. I've been reading *whoever you are, cant remember* but someone said something about the SG was first originally called the Les Paul 2 SG or something until Les Paul took his business elsewhere. Anyways, what I want to know is if taking an SG and a Les Paul with the same specs, would the sound be different between the two? For example take the Epiphone SG Goth and the Epiphone Les Paul Goth, or the Gibson SG Voodoo, and the Epiphone Les Paul Voodoo. Thanks for all the help. -Jamie
  3. Will show a picture of my teisco as soon as I get it up. This is almost the exact same of what I got except the logo on mine is a thick hologram, theres no label, and there's a humbucker in between the single coils (which I find weird) the whammy bar is different as well since my Uncle lost it, however he improvised and added a real killer whammy. To show you how killer it is until I get a picture up - I took it to the 12th fret who are experts when it comes to vintage guitars (popular among north america) and they told me that the guitar is worth 75 bucks but they'd give me an extra 25 for the whammy bar haha. Those eastwoods are probably made overseas, but I wouldn't buy one since it doesn't fit the look I like. I'd take the airline body and paint it a nice satin black and add some deep low sounding pickups to it. Other than that I hope they go bankrupt haha. Are those eastwoods made of wood or fibreglass like the originals? I do like the old vintage guitars but the problem I have is when they start selling on ebay much more than they're worth. Like this 550 for a spectrum 5 reissue? I wouldn't buy it. I'd rather get the LP I'm dieing to have right now haha. -Jamie
  4. Hey all. I am looking for a combo amp with an amazing clean. I wish I could find one just with clean and no reverbs, chorus', distortion, overdrive, and not to mention those amps with 1000 built in effects. I have been looking at the fender hot rod deluxe and a fender Ultimate Chorus DSP (too bad that they have overdrives, reverbs and chorus'). Is there any amp out there that can give me power to gig with which has an amazing clean and only clean in combo format? If not just clean at least an amp with not too many special effects. I'm a pedal fan when it comes to distortions and effects. My price range is under 1000 USD. All suggestions will be helpful and noted in my powerpoint *points to head*. -Jamie
  5. Thanks lovekraft. i havent tried the 5150 and i was just judgeing from the specs, and thanks for the heads up on the marshall275. My budget is below 1000, I don't care for distortions on amps because I have a Digitech metal master which i use 95% of the time, and so far no amp has been able to match it for my taste, seeing as it mods a Boss HM, Digitech Death Metal and a ProCo RAT. I also have a Boss OD-20 which I only use for the occasional messin around doin weird distortions and styles that I don't gig with (blues, acid, classic, etc.). What I am looking for is a combo amp with an amazing clean. I wish I could find one just with clean and no reverbs, chorus', distortion, overdrive, and not to mention those amps with 1000 built in effects. I have been looking at the fender hot rod deluxe and a fender Ultimate Chorus DSP too bad that they have overdrives, reverbs and chorus'. Is there any amp out there that can give me power to gig with and has an amazing clean and only clean? If not only clean at least an amp with not too many special effects lol. The guitar I use is a Yamaha RGX121S but I'm thinking of getting an Epiphone LP Goth or SG (I love the sound) -Jamie
  6. I suggest going out to a thrift store finding a pair of those pants and cutting and glueing them to fit to the guitar - that would give you a fuzzy look haha. -Jamie
  7. okay that made my day! I own a sears teisco - worth 75 bucks. I've seen some spectrums go for about 125 to 400+ (this was a spectrum 4) - probably because it had precision style guitar pickups and 5 buttons with 5 knobs. Old guitars are in demand thanks to this stupid new genre of bands like the vines, the white stripes, the hives, the walking eyeballs, etc who claim they're bringing back old rock, and they buy old equpiment like teisco, eko (which are back in business btw), airline, valco, saturn, etc to show off that they're so vintage or whatever (lame i know)....i'll just say one thing about this genre - how can you bring back old rock when old rock is still around? Neil Young released an album last year and John Fogerty just released one in september! Btw, AC/DC, Rush, Bob Dylan, and many others are still around, and last time I checked Keith Richards isn't dead yet (probably sleeps upside down adding 10 years to his life which is probably why he cannot be killed by conventional weapons) I saw on ebay a 1962 Airline go for sale (same one Jack White from the white stripes uses, prolly a diff. year) and they're only worth 200 bucks at the most, and it sold for 1000 USD. Also if you check out music123 Eastwood is selling reissues of these guitars. I think it stinks but who knows - if all these vintage guitars go up maybe newer ones will come down -Jamie
  8. maybe the 5150 you tried had some faultyness in it lol or peavey just doesn't know how to make tube amps seriously looking at the specs it looks like a real killer amp - thats why i was thinking it may beat out the fender hot rod deluxe since it's pretty much the same specs except the 5150 has more 12AX7 tubes, and different speakers but then again I won't know for sure until I try. -Jamie
  9. Again though it comes down to feel and sound and if you like it. I mean people in my high school go around saying "oh I got a fender" and talk how amazing their guitar is and some of them just don't sound too good at all to my ears - keeping in mind also that some can't play except a few chords I mean you're never going to find a guitar that everyone likes, some are gonna love gibsons more than epis. and some are gonna love epis. more than gibsons Heres how you solve it... When it comes down to Epiphone and Gibsons - best to skip school for a day, go to a guitar store right when they open at 9 AM and try out every guitar in the store until you find the one you want and which is best. Who cares about the colouring and the finishing - that can easily be fixed -Jamie
  10. yeah the graphtech ghosts can be a real pain if you have any guitar that doesn't have a pickguard where the tones and wireing are. -Jamie
  11. right now i'm currently shopping for a tube amp - so far fender hot rod deluxe is in the lead but that could change once i try a peavey 5150, xxx, xxl or marshall atv275 - which in the end i guess from what you're saying may be cheaper to buy -Jamie
  12. Alright I know that building a guitar from scratch can be more expensive than buying one but what about amp building? Dumb question? prolly haha, but I am thinking of building my own tube amp and I'm just curious if I should step up to the plate to build one or buy one (one i'll buy will be between about 800-1000 canadian which is about 600-800 USD). Thanks for all the help. -Jamie
  13. The bridge you buy from them is a tune-o-matic just with the piezo pickups under the saddles is all - but thats cool if you're not too comfy with that. It can be a pain to wire for guitars wihtout the pickguards covering the pickups and wires (like strats and teles). -Jamie
  14. here this should help. It's an article that gives a hands on review of Gibsons and Epiphones because it's not just a simple way of telling the difference due to all the different models. In the end I find the main reason of cost is because the Gibsons are made in the states with american workers and use rare honduran mahogony (not sure if they are on the endangered list and Epiphones are made overseas using common mahogony. Hope this helps! -Jamie
  15. I read the tutorial on the material body finish using fabric. Is it possible to use paper? If so, is there any paper that would not work with this? -Jamie
  16. Sorry about my previous post - if you're using a tune-o-matic bridge they range for about 160. You replace the whole bridge, whereas if it's a strat, prs, tele, etc. you replace the saddles...the website also has a guitar search - just type your guitar in and it'll tell you what saddles you need, if it doesn't help then you can email them. -Jamie
  17. The pickup was a bass humbucker or jazz that was thick enough to mess my brain up to look like a humbucker lol...the picture was a distant shot on a funny angle so that's why. The cover was black, so you couldnt see any rails or coils. -Jamie
  18. You use special saddles designed by Graphtech. For tune-o-matic bridges they are 100-120 bucks and the preamp is about 80. The saddles are different because they have the piezo under them which have wires that connect to somewhere (cant remember exactly.) I suggest going to graphtech's website, it's very straight forward and you can even watch a video on installing them. Just go up above where I gave the link or google for them. It sounds like you want to put these on a solidbody guitar, which by then you should use the graphtech. I'm up for a project using the ghosts. I'm going to be using a strat or knockoff strat and one way other than using Ghosts to get the acoustic tone would be you'd have to take the tremolo system out of your guitar (the metal piece under the bridge - the weight), stick the piezo under the bridge, and then fill the gap - it's cheaper however remember that each guitar saddle is adjusted differently, so some might not be as clear as others whereas on acoustics all saddles are pretty much together. Or you could take the strat bridge off, stick an acoustic bridge on and then put the piezo - there's many options but since you're using a tune-o-matic, i think you have to go with graphtech on this one Is this any help? Sorry if I'm all over the map lol -Jamie
  19. Can anyone send or post some links on amp building? I am a noob so a good beginners site would help Thanks. -Jamie
  20. Hey there. I was browsing on ebay about a week ago and some guy was selling a double guitar his friend made. One was a standard 6 string and another was a standard 6 string with a bass pickup. I have never seen anything around the lines of a standard 6 string with a bass pickup. Would you get a clear tone out of this, or would it be faded or muffy? The guy stated it just gives a deeper tone but I dunno since this is the first time I've seen this. Thanks for the help! -Jamie
  21. Depends on what you're doing. If you're doing an acoustic project I've been suggested by StewMac to use the L.R Baggs - just search for them on stewmac If you're wanting to add a piezo on a solid body I suggest using Graphtech's Ghost Pickups. Graphtech They are special saddles with the piezo under each saddle, that fit on the bridge of your guitar (or around those lines lol). You can get them fitted to almost any bridge. Great if you wanna switch from thrashing rock riffs to a nice acoustic sound. Also includes a video on how to install them (fairly easy stuff!) -Jamie
  22. I tried the Line 6 spider II and I wasn't very pleased. The knobs are so sensitive that the sound waves could turn them lol. There's 2 metal settings and one metal on the Ultra setting. I didn't find them to be that great - I prefer a good clean amp (like a fender deluxe) with a Digitech metal master cranking the morph all the way up, or use a RAT2. The clean on the line 6 was kind of garbage I thought as well. Then again I hear once and a while that some amps have to be cranked past a certain point to get the best out of it and I had this amp at maybe 1 since there was about 20 other people in the guitar store playing and the owners have to keep the peace lol. I also tried recently a Marshall MG50 and wow was that ever garbage as well . My 30 watt Nova amp from Sears could keep up with it clean wise. I am currently amp shopping and there's three amps I still wanna check out - Peavey XXL combo, XXX combo, 5150 combo, and a Marshall AVT275. So far a Fender Deluxe is winning in the race of "come home with me" . Can anyone provide some insight on those peavey and marshall amps if you recommend them? My style is bands like My Dying Bride and Anathema - slow metal riffs with occasionaly thick dark clean. I've been told just to get a fender and use a good distortion pedal. -Jamie
  23. My Dad bought one of those Estaban guitars or whatever. He only plays it like once a month so he wanted the cheapest he could find lol. I tried it and the first thing you should do is change the strings - it's like playing with dried up bass strings. Overall this guitar is terrible. I suggest if you want a decent accoustic get a Yamaha. They have always had good accoustics. -Jamie
