  1. Well here goes nothing. This is my 5-string fretless i built. This is my first ever project. Its neck is 9 laminate consisting of Maple, Purpleheart, Walnut, African Paduak, and 2 maple veneers. The body is laminated of Bubinga, Poplar, and Walnut veneers. The fingerboard is a lined fretless made from Bloodwood. It is coated in urethane and has green fiberoptic side markers. They light up by a single led in the control cavity and are ran with a resistor to come on when a cord is plugged in. The truss is a lmi 2way, and cavity covers are made from matching wood. The nut is also Bubinga. The finish is catalyst Urethane. Electronics are EMG Active Jazz PUPs, and Emg pots. Hardware is Gotoh. The bass plays great and i still get a wonder feeling every time i pick it up knowing i built it. MoRe PiCs!!!
  2. i read a article written by a guy who built a guitar out of pine(dont remember the name had a big Z on the headstock) he said it sounded great, he didnt have any sound clips so its going to be interesting to actually hear one. the quality thus far looks superb!
  3. i started my new job this week at another water utilitie. Ive spent the last 3 days staying busy trying to pass myself off as a good employee, Well today i had a chance to look around the shop on my lunch break and man am I stoked, new shop tools outside of the norm consist of, 2 radial arm saws, 3 drill press' 1 hydro press, 1 bandsaw, airtools a plenty, Metal lathe, Milling machine. God only knows why we have these tools for Water Utility but guess where most of my lunch breaks are gonna be from now on!
  4. the walnut had me fooled until the pic with the gloss, i was thinking why cover that sweet looking limba with that(besides the point its a hollowbody)? but its very pretty and nice figure, the neck joint is sweet too its gonna be a stunning piece!
  5. i could see where a volute might add a tiny bit of sustain because it adds a little more mass under the area where the nut is,ive used them cause i like them, but i think they are mostly for looks and strength check out the volutes Ken Smith puts on his basses AWESOME! KENsmithVolute KEnSMiTh2
  6. Yeah thats the way it came from the factory, it sits flat on the body like a strat trem. so what I gather the only difference between it and a floating one would be the trem block and the recessed routing?
  7. Hey guys, i got an old Kramer im gonna dismember to build a new project. (cause im cheap like that and all the hardware is in good shape!! ) What im wondering is when i build the new neckthrough body can i route the floyd so that its a floating type unit and still use this trem? why i ask is because on the Kramer it wasnt routed that way and just sat on the surface and im really not sure if there is a difference in the trems. heres a pic thanks here is another pic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/scottyd/GUitar001.jpg ok ive tried about a dozen times to get those pics in seperate posts and it keeps putting them together!
  8. yeah i think ive read something like that on the main site in the tutorials.
  9. Ive used synthetic enamel automotive paint, it has good gloss and sprays easy, most the ones ive used were mixed with a hardener and a reducer. It also wetsands and buffs good. The cons ive found are it doesnt hold up well under sunlight and you have to keep on it with wax or polish to keep it from oxidizing. That aside i dont know how it would react with nitro would prob be best to use a primer sealer between the 2.
  10. i dont think the guitar is trashed, it just needs a lot of work you will have to fill in the low spots to get them back level just so its worthy of a solid color, and dont let some of these guys get to you, even if it is PRS its YOUR prs so do with it what you will. But i would consider taking it to a pro for the repair.
  11. is it just me or does that neck have hardly any taper? which would be great for my big fingers!
  12. Judging by that second pic you sanded it with some sort of power disk sander, you can see some obvious low spots where the disk dug in around the drop (unless the primer is still wet in those areas,) if not however and they are low spots they will have to be leveled before it will look good with any kind of glossy finish on it. But you may still can pull off a darker sunburst just light enough for some grain to show. Good luck
  13. all good advice oooor you could go this route!! WhatYouNeedToDo
  14. I really dont think its needed the hole looks about the same as my ibanez sr 406 ill measure it once i find my friggin calipers
  15. WOW!! i can almost and i mean just almost see spending $700, but $2000 I hope if your selling your projects you at least break even! (kidding) I just find it amusing because I started building my own stuff to save money! You got any pics of this $2000 guitar? i bet its stunning......
  16. yeah like he said it changes color through oxidation so once its sealed it shouldnt change much. The last 2 basses i built i used purple heart neck laminates and i cleared them with urethane, i have not noticed any color change. ive also seen a couple of old Tobias basses that the color was still purple too, But in contrast i had some uncleared scrap laying around and it turned an ugly brown. as far as strength goes, for a neck you cant beat it!
  17. i personally think that you should make sure your squier isnt plywood before you go through the trouble, my first electric guitar was a squier and it was. as for the neck you would have to have an overhang for the extra frets and it might interfere with the neck pup.
  18. thats pretty cool! its about the same size as my guitarists marshall head
