  1. Uhhh....well if you are in or around Evansville, Indiana I can tell you where to go.
  2. I don't think drilling the hole perfectly perpendicular is even all that important, honestly. I use the little plastic rods, and I figure even if the hole isn't perfectly straight, by the time I've trimmed it off and brought the plastic down flush to the fingerboard you'd never be able to tell if it was 10° off. Just an observation. Not trying to say that being sloppy is okay or anything.
  3. Thanks for the input guys. The mini-gun sounded like the best idea, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Finex FX1000 for $89 bucks. These are supposed to work with 4-7 CFM which shouldn't be a problem. Now I'm getting excited about doing some spraying!
  4. I'm seeing the Finex 1000 on Ebay for under 100, and they look nice. Does anybody here use LVLP?
  5. I will most likely only be spraying nitro lacquer. It's not a gas powered compressor. It's a Craftsman that I've had for about 10 years. Now that you mention it, the motor is pretty huge compared to the tank. I'm not sure if it's a peak rating, it just says 4 hp on the side and gives a CFM rating. I hadn't had anyone suggest a mini gun yet. I guess they're plenty big for spraying a guitar?
  6. These numbers are quite unusual. I tried converting them into metric and the numbers behind the decimal point got even weirder. what made you go for these particular lengths? They're just fractions. 5/8 and 3/8. But I look at numbers like this all day, so I guess it doesn't look weird to me.
  7. I mark the locations with a pencil, hit them carefully with a center punch, and then I use a hand drill. Remarkably low tech, I suppose.
  8. I've got a friends equipment to use, but I've decided I need to get my own system together. I have a 4 HP 15 gallon compressor that delivers 8.9 CFM. It might limit me somewhat, but I can live with that if I can get by with it. I'm interested in a gravity feed HVLP, would anybody try to talk me into a different style with my compressor? I've looked at several already, anywhere from 50 bucks to around 150, which is about the most I'd want to spend. But I'm unsure of how to tell what's any better about the more expensive guns. I'm probably only going to be doing a few guitars a year....not a lot of spraying. Can anybody suggest a good brand? What about the Husky or Kobalt which are available at Home Depot or Lowes? Anybody tried one of those? They seem to look and feel nice....not that that means anything.
  9. Looks like it's going to be a pretty cool guitar. The only thing I'd like to see is binding on the body, I'm not too keen on seeing the veneer thickness there on the sides. Well, I'd also like to see pickups, haha. I don't know anything about that VG-99 setup, but I'd hate to have a guitar that I couldn't just plug into an amp if I wanted to.
  10. Great looking bass. And I personally prefer the glossy finish going by the pictures.
  11. Actually I do have a compressor, and my buddy has a few spray guns and accessories - so I'll be spraying it. I'm either going to be setting up a small area in my garage - or I might have access to a couple of better spots...we'll see how that pans out soon. The guy has agreed that he'd like lacquer on this guitar so it looks like it's a go.
  12. Nice looking wood. Good luck with the first build.
  13. The one I'm concentrating on first is the neck thru, the one with the flame maple cap. That one is getting a PRS style vibrato bridge, Seymour Duncan pickups (not sure yet the models), and Sperzel locking tuners. We had discussed doing an oil finish, but I might try to talk him into going ahead and doing lacquer. The top will be stained black, and I just want it to be glossy.
  14. I drew it first on a big piece of paper, then I cut it out and traced in on a piece of MDF, and then I cut it out and sanded it smooth. That's about it.
