  1. Myka, how well would your technique work on mahogany? I'm assuming pore fill prior to stain? Maybe stain the base/center color, pore fill, then burst? Thanks, man.
  2. That is some beautiful wood, man. Great work, too. Man, I hope my first turns out that well.
  3. Thanks, Kevan. I'd already considered that, but didn't want to bother them till I'd exhausted all other options.
  4. Cool, there's an OBI near here. As I may have to go the 'brush on' route, I'm wondering if they'll have the Retarder, as well.
  5. Hey fellas, I'm trying to find a source for nitrocellulose lacquer over here in Germany. Looked at Rockinger's site & couldn't find anything. Checked out Clou's website & looks like they have what I need, but where would I buy it at? I speak pretty good German, but have no clue what you'd call a shop that sells wood finishing supplies. If any of you German members could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks.
  6. Nice dude. Thanks for the pics of your fret bender. I was trying to figger out how to do it, w/o springing for the StewMac tool & couldn't think of anything & you just go & post the perfect (to me) solution.
  7. Played in a band, briefly, about 2 yrs. ago. Buncha old-ish guys (I'll be 35 next week & I was the 2nd youngest in the band) playin' modern heavy rock for grins- Disturbed, Stereomud, SOD, Nickelback, Godsmack, etc., just for grins & the excuse to rock out on the weekends. Hated that that fell apart. Mucho fun.
  8. Hey Streamline, from what I've heard, the DC series are supposed to have the dirt/crunch/scream of a Mk IV w/a decent clean channel. I've got a Single Recto m'self- you can't go wrong w/a Mesa. CA offset from GMT oughtta be 7 hrs.
  9. A bud's '84 LP Custom's ebony board was so 'worn in' & slick, it was an effort to play slowly on that guitar. I've played & owned tons of guitars & that '84 was the slickest, fastest guitar I ever layed hands on. Shoulda bought it off him when he got rid of it.
  10. I prefer ebony for the most part, especially on all-mahogany guitars. I feel it gives 'em a bit more 'edge' or attack. I also prefer the looks & the feel of ebony. To me, ebony feels slicker & faster than rosewood. That being said, I really dig RW, too; just prefer ebony.
  11. A friend of mine built an all-korina LP Custom that was insane. He also did a maple top, limba neck & body LP Std that was super sweet.
  12. Nice dude. I've got some black limba inbound & that's the first time I've actually seen color on limba. How'd you do it? Dye the wood or spray tinted lacquer?
  13. Hey Ragman, lookin' nice dude. I'm down in Stuttgart. I'm fixing to start on a V project myself. How are you doing to 'finish' it? Just curious, 'cos I have no idea where to go for finishing supplies over here.
  14. Cool, thanks. Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding out how to figure the compensation?
  15. Okay, so what's the scoop on scale lengths? For years, I've been thinking Gibson used 24 3/4", then today I find out it's actually 24 9/16, with the bridge set at 24 3/4. So, what's the rationale behind this & does every/anyone else do the same?
  16. Did a couple searches on alder & poplar, but didn't really answer my question. Think I'll go ahead & just drop the $ on mahogany. You sayin the Gnome has drawings of Mockingbirds? Have to check it out, despite the pain caused by looking at his site
  17. Hey all. New guy here. 'Bout ready to take the plunge & 'roll my own'. Wanting to either build a Flying V or a Mockingbird. Probably the Mockingbird, 'cos I've always wanted one. So here's the questions' Neckthru vs. set neck? Pros, cons of both? Anyone have a source for Mockingbird plans/templates? Anybody got a 'Bird they'd be willing to trace, measure, etc. for reasonable compensation? Woods? I was recommended to start out w/poplar or alder, but I'm a die hard mahogany or korina guy. Tonal properties of poplar or alder vs. mahogany? Was thinking of mahogany body & neck w/ebony board. Whatchoo guys think? Thanks a bunch.
