  1. OK, here's my pencil sketch, which I did on a slab of 2" cherry: This was a slice off the butt end of a log with a big sweep (curve) at the base. Looking down, you can see how cupped it is: I've had some ideas rattling around my head for a while, and this seems like a good opportunity to try some of them out. No promises, though, as it may not survive the the implementation of those ideas.
  2. What if I want to draw mine in crayon? And I goofed- the body width is 12"
  3. Trying to scale up a pic, I'm coming up with about 10 1/4" width across the body? is that right?
  4. Actually, it was Westhemann's remark, I merely resembled it. I'm definitely having fun thinking about it, but don't know if I'll have the time to actually do anything. It really is an awful design, well deserving of such a tribute.
  5. Wow, I had no idea they drilled the side markers do deep
  6. Wow, these are really cool! I hadn't seen this thread yet. Super job! I actually did a kitchen countertop with this same stuff a couple years ago. Had enough left to do a few pickguards, here's one:
  7. Hi, both 1 5/8 and 1 11/16 are very common nut widths. You won't really know if you like it or not until you try it. That 1/16" of an inch will make no difference whatsoever in regards to the pickups. Can you post some pics of the dulcimers?
  8. Yes, I did that on mine, copying the intonation of a guitar with the same scale length.
  9. Close enough for rock-n-roll, as can be backed up by countless recordings of old Gibsons with stop bar wraparound bridges. I like it! I made This one out of a chunk of #5 iron rebar.
  10. Maybe you glued them up out of phase.
  11. In order for someone to state that the lumber they sell is one of the NHLA grades, it has to have been graded by a certified grader, who has taken their course. I'm sure it can be enforced pretty heavily. Big bucks are at stake. If you look at the figures there, you can see that each grade should produce a certain percentage of clear stock, and the minimum sizes of the clear portions. Furniture companies, etc. buy truckloads of lumber based on those numbers. I'm sure they have something similar in the UK/Euro since the timber industry as a whole is much more heavily regulated over there.
  12. There are official grading rules for hardwoods, but the "grading" we see for figure in maple and such is above and beyond them, and is purely at the seller's discretion. These are the grading rules for hardwoods in the USA: NHLA grading rules
  13. Super Nice!! This is definitely my favorite of all the ones I have seen you post. Glad to see it in GOTM!
  14. Fuzz- Thanks! That's a friend of mine, Michael Vance playing the guitar. He plays sessions in Nashville, and I let him try out my guitars in the studio from time to time. Jason- That's pretty! I'm guessing it's quartersawn, because it shows the same flake as QS maple. Never seen Ziricote that close before. Heres a glued up blank of yellow poplar with staining from sapsucker holes-
  15. Cool.. Really liking all the funky limba. Here's some of my stash- Weathered Tupelo ( american black gum, nyssa sylvatica ) cool spiral grain and algae Backside of really wide (18") white oak barn board- 14" wide American Chestnut, nice saw marks and bird poo- And emerging from the dark side, here's a nice bookmatch of quartersawn Red Mulberry ( Morus Rubra )
  16. That's quite possible. I was plugging into a small powered mixer that has phantom power but I don't know if it was on or off at the time. Probably on, though the way it sounds. I took a look inside and couldn't find any obvious problems, so I'm just gonna take it in to the shop when I can.
  17. I've got a SWR workingmans 10 bass amp with a balanced xlr line out. A while back, I plugged into this while everything was on, and got a loud pop. I'm pretty sure I even saw a small blue flash from the back. Anyhow, the output from this jack is now weak and distorted. What happened? How do I fix it? Another problem is that the amp has a constant hiss, regardless of the volume setting. I'm pretty sure this started at the same time, but it's possible I could just be noticing it more now that I have to mic the amp to record. Other than that, the amp works fine. Any Ideas? Thanks, George
  18. It's 1/4" wide and 3/8 deep, but you'd do best to wait till you have it anyway, less guesswork. One thing about these is that they are a tad deeper right where the bottom rod goes thru the collar, which holds it away from the top rod by about .020". I use a 1/4" chisel like a scraper there and shave the bottom of the channel it till the rod fits right.
  19. The ones Grizzly sells are super nice, and only 3/8" deep. Ebay seller "bezdez" also has really nice ones, even cheaper.
  20. That's the way the original V's were done by Gibson ( maybe still are? )
  21. just bumping this so it will show up as having recent posts
  22. The green is absolutely hideous- I love it!! That guitar will look truly scary on stage. I also like the roundness of the avenger, but I hope to see one in the future with a rounded heel and set neck. Lovely blue on the Nova Love the shape of the nortstar- I tend to use curves like that myself. I wasn't too keen on the previous multiscale, but that's only because I can't stand white guitars or gold hardware. This one is fantastic, super job on the grain! I goofed and hit "view results" instead of "need another peek" so I didn't actually vote, but I was really undecided anyway, between the Deco and the Reso. Excellent work on the resonator, but I think I would have liked to see a different wood for the top- not sure what, though. The Deco looked odd at first, but really grew on me, very funky, I probably would have settled on it in the end. Wez- I guess there's just no pleasing you. That's OK, I actually find your comments interesting- gets me thinking in different ways. It's interesting to see how some of this stuff plays out to people overseas. I guess the themes I play with tend to be fairly steeped in americana. Thanks all for the input, and even though I probably won't enter the uber-rustic stuff in GOTM, I will certainly post them in other sections, and if there seems to be a mandate, I'll reconsider. I've got a bunch of new ideas I want to try out, using some of the rustic motif, but going in a different direction. Is that sufficiently vague?
