  1. Did you seriously take off the paint with a butter knife? That's crazy. Its pretty good for a first try. Keep us posted.
  2. In theory it could work but it seems to me that you would have to route out a lot of fingerboard wood. You would probably run the risk of going through the fingerbord but it seems like a really awsome idea. If you've got an extra fingerboard i would give it a go. Just go really slowely and check you depth a lot.
  3. You can find acoustic guitar kits all over the internet but Im pretty sure you can't find an Ovation kit. Ovation guitars have a "roundback," and I haven't seen a single kit with a roundback. You would probably have to make one from scratch. And if you do decide to build one keep us posted.
  4. I would go with the burst because, no offense, but that body is kinda crappy looking like that. Lots of imperfections. But awsome job for a first go.
  5. This is looking great man. Keep up the good work.
  6. I would burn it, stain it, and then clear coat.
  7. Those are awsome. Great work. Are you selling these on ebay? If so how much are you gonna let em go for? I might just have to grab one. I've had telecaster fever lately.
  8. I really want to put zebra pickups in a guitar i just refinished for a friend but im on a tight budget. I just found these and they're amazingly cheap. Are these gonna sound really crappy if I buy them? If they sound decent then these are way to good to pass up. http://www.guitarshopsupply.net/product_in...products_id=196
  9. Will I be able to route out and entire cavity with a plunge router or will I have to drill out some of the material first? I don't know anything about routers.
  10. I know the dremel can be used to route out cavity's for inlay work but could it also be used to route pickup and control cavity's? I don't think it would work. If not does anyone know of a cheap router that would allow me to route pickup and control cavity's for under $100? Before this I have always had a freind of mine route cavity's for me but I want to do everything on my own now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  11. I have a digitech GNX4 and im just now getting around to uploading the included software. The problem is im using windows 98 right now and the software won't work with that. For those of you guys that know is windows XP or 2000 better. Digitech told me that they will both work but they highly reccomend Windows XP with service pack one. This was a couple months ago when I asked them and now Windows XP comes with service pack two. Will this still work? I have access to all three programs and I've emailed digitech but they usually take a while to respnd and I figured I could get a quicker answer here.
  12. The RP14D is decent. The only bad thing i've heard about it is that the footswitches wear out faster than most other pedals. I have a GNX4 so im kind of biased because that is the best pedal anybody can get. The GNX4 is amazing. Most of Digitech's multi effect stuff is pretty good. I used to have the RP80 and its really good for only 80 bucks. Same thing with the RP80 though is that you probably shouldn't stomp on the pedals real, real hard.
  13. My neighbor just gave me some awsome looking old speakers for a home sound system. I already have a sound system so I was wondering if there was a way that I could make it so that I could hook my GNX4 up to the speakers so I could use them as an amp. The speakers don't have an input jack that would accept a guitar cable. They just have connections for speaker wire. Would it work if I bought a CD player that was compatable with the speakers and plugged the GNX4 into the headphone jack? This isn't really all that important to me but the speakers look really cool and I thought it would be awsome to use them as a guitar amp. The cabinets are made of wood and they have like a wicker mesh covering on the front. They remind me of amps from the 50's and 60's.
  14. Thanks a lot. I'm pretty sure that's what it is but I still wanted an outside opinion. Im gonna see if I can talk to the shop about putting some different tubes in and letting me play it again and if they don't maybe i'll just buy one off of musiciansfriend.
  15. Im in the market for a tube amp right now and the local music store has a really nice Fender Deville 410. It sounds great until I hit a bass note really hard. Whenever I hit a note like that the amp makes a cracking sound that kind of disrupts the sound of the note. It doesn't do this when treble notes are played. I wasn't able to ask the owner about it because he was busy with another customer and I had an appointment I had to get to. And I was playing my guitar through it so I know that that isn't the problem. Do any of you guys have any idea what this problem could be caused by? Any help would be appreciated.
  16. I really appreciate all of your advice. And im not saying my work is gorgeous but I can handle most of the jobs people would want done. And if they brought me a job I'm not sure about I would tell them to take it to the local shop. and most of the guitars were gonna get to work on are not great guitars, their crappy guitars that people want made playable. And just because I don't know what to charge doesn't mean I can't start doing this. I have quite a good idea about what local shops charge and what most things cost but I was interested in what you guys charge because most of the work I've seen on this forum is much nicer than that of the local guitar shop. And lastly I respect all of your comments but just because I'm cautious about what to charge doesn't mean I'm not ready to start charging.
  17. I wasn't sure if this was the right place to put this or not so someone can feel free to move it. A friend and I are starting a very small local business. We're going to offer guitar repairs and refinishing. A couple things were not going to do right now are burst finishes and major work on hollow body guitars. We have a lot of friends that need work done on their solid body guitar and basses but they aren't willing to pay the high prices that the local guitar shop is asking for. My friend and I are pursuing this to fuel our passion for restoring and building guitars. My question is this, how much should we charge hourly for work done on solidbody guitars? How much money have you guys charged for work? I want to keep ou prices low while still making a profit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  18. Also did you have to angle your neck at all since your not using the stop bar tailpeice like in the diagrams. What you built is essentially what im building except im probably only going to install one humbucker. So that brings me to another question what kind of pickup would you guys reccomend for the bridge position if you want an all around sound but only one pickup? At first I was building this guitar for myself but I have a friend who's very interested and he wants only one pickup but he doesn't know what kind.
  19. Setch, can u give me the mesurments of your LP at the widest point, the skinniest point, and the thickness not including the carved top since i will be builing a flattop version? If you could do this for me i would be very appreciative. I would get the mesurments off of that website but my computers not letting me manipulte it right now.
  20. Can anyone give me the dememsions of the Gibson double cut way les paul or a place where i can find the demension? Im making it a flat top bolt on if that helps anyone.
  21. Is it possible to remove the discoloration from a guitar that appears to have had a sticker on it without refinishing it entirerly? And just to clear things up, this is not sticker residue, this is actual discoloration of the paint. The paint is white if that makes a difference. This is for a friend that bought the guitar used and the original owner couln't remember if he had ever put a sticker on it or not.
  22. thanks for the help. I had thought about the routing problem and i was almost positive that the stanard fender frettless is front routed which wouldn't look to good unless you're going for that "I took my pickguard off because im making a statement" look. As of right now I'll probably just end up buying some cheapo bass from a garage sale or pawn shop and taking the frets off and filling the slots with wood veneer or epoxy. If I take the frets off though will i have to replace the nut because it seems to me that the action would be pretty high without the frets on?
  23. Im really interested in getting a frettless jazz bass. At first I was going to build it myself but after running through the cost it's way to expensive for me to afford. So now im considering purchasing a Fender standard frettless jazz bass and refinishing it. My question is this if I take off the pickguard on the bass will it still look right? Im going for the Jaco Pastorius signature model type look. So if I take it off will it be weird looking or will it look alright once I refinish it.
