  1. Try putting the fret wire against the fret slot and see if the barbs make it wide enough. Otherwise, I hear a drop of glue in the slots helps seat them.
  2. B3 is the only string through body option on the page, so I guess that one's your choice.
  3. I have experienced several failed attempts at learning to play guitar, each resulting in a few year layoff in frustration. I can't play lead. I can't shred. But then one day a buddy of mine came over and just started chugging away at some cool rhythms and it was like the heavens opened up on me. Since then I've made more progress in three months than I had previosly made in years. I've fooled around with chords, scales, attempts at shredding and stuff, but it all ended in frustration. Now, for some reason the guitar makes sense to me. Rhythm guitar. Look at Malcolm Young, he rules and the guy never takes a lead break. Tunes and progressions are just spilling out of me now from just one short bit of inspiration. I'm glad I didn't give up again. Just a bit of inspiration for anyone frustrated with their progress. I kept a guitar in hand for ten years, more or less and never got much better until now. Do it because you love it and don't worry about the rest, it'll come.
  4. This is just what I've been looking for!! Now if i can just make it work...
  5. I am offially hooked on building guitars and am planning my second build, a neck through flying V. I am, however, broke. I plan to use Cherry for the neck. i hace a ton of Cedar in thick pieces from my deck. Can I use it on the wings?
  6. I like the hand work, I trust it more than my machine work. I'm going to give this method a try.
  7. It's both ugly and cool to me. I give the guy kudoes for doing his own thing, either way.
  8. I like it for the most part, but maybe it needs a bit more tweaking. To me, the rear bout is too small in comparison to the flare of the horns, or maybe the treble side horn needs a bit of work. The size and shape don't quite fit the rest. All in all, I like the concept.
  9. You're not kidding it's toxic!!! When I routed the body shape, I didn't wear my respirator and got sick for three days. I had a flare up of Asthma, nausea and general malaise. Anyone working with Purpleheart should be extra cautious. I was pretty sick for a few days from it. And I mean sick. It's om my website.
  10. The laminates are glued and rough sanded. Now I have to trim the headstock thinner, install the truss rod and attach the fretboard. I also plan to laminate the headstock with the Purpleheart. Also, there are very small edge gaps in a few spots between the laminates. (bad job sanding at the edges. I'll find a planer next time.) Suggestions on how to fill them and haveit look decent? I was thinking a glue/sawdust mixture.
  11. I have a ton of Cherry, and long enough to make a neck-thru. Anyone have any expreience with Cherry for a neck?
  12. My guitar top is going to be like this one. Here's the wood. My problem is that the Purpleheart has white stuff stuck in the grain from sanding and I don't know how to clean it so it looks good. Should I use a scraper maybe, or does someone have a good suggestion. Just for tour information, the Purpleheart is SUPER hard, man.
  13. I hear Titebond is good. I just glued my second body together with it, so I'll let you know. My first was Gorilla glue and it did great, but then again it just needs to hold two pieces of wood together. Nice work on the carve, man.
  14. Wrap the neck/fingerboard in a damp towel, steam it with an iron and use a paint spatula to remove the fingerboard. Read it here.
  15. This is turning out awesome. Very nice and clean work.
  16. As I said, if you can clamp it flat, you can glue it flat. Try clamping it to a flat surface. That should give you a good idea how much force you need to use on the clamps. I glued it and clamped the crap out of it, TIGHT. I take it out tonight to check...
  17. Fantastic guitar. I'm especially impressed that it's so understated and classy and you're only sixteen. Very, very impressive. You should be proud of yourself. Also, how thick is that body around the edge. I really like thinner guiitars and I'd like to read your specs.
