Every week. Every week it's like this.

Y'all know I'm a trucker now, gone M-F. The weekends are the only time I have to make sawdust and relax in the garage.

Every week I'm out now it's in the mid 50s through the week, but it won't break 32 on the weekend. That's too cold for this old man to putter around out there.

    Every damn week. 😠

I grew up on the KC side, but yeah I know just what you're talking about.

    Had to move south....

Showed the last few posts to my wife. Here's what she said: Well that sure beats the burl table of her mother. And: That man has to be retired, there's no way a working man has so much time to spend.

It was nice of you to share this with your wife.

I only wish I was retired. I guess I am retired on weekends, because I do get most of them to do with as I wish. The last 8 or 9 months worth of them I've wished to spend on this little project. I wonder if I've hit the halfway mark yet.....

With me the problem is the more to do with the fact that it’s really messy to work with. Unless everything is really well sealed then it just bleeds out everywhere. Heavy too. I actually really like the look of it, but there are better options I think.

Exactly. I was being cryptic. It loves being orange and wants everything else to be orange as well. the furniture, carpets pets, and adjoining wood.:)

you know me... always trying to throw a wrench into your designs lol!  clear epoxy edge?  epoxy holes so you could see the branches through the top?  Well perhaps someday if I do one that will be what I'll do.  Your stuff is always inspiring!

The current plan is to have a clear epoxy or resin edge, if I can figure out how to day that and follow all the cool little contours. The edges under all the little points look like they were formed by some thick viscous molten semi liquid that was poured onto a a flat surface and cooled into the shape it flowed into. There are no voids in the top that pass all the way through to allow you to see the branches, What voids there are going to be filled with turquoise chips, or something similar and the with resin. At least that is the current plan.

Jesus that is a serious bit of wood. What's the betting in about a 100 years, someone turns your table top into a guitar.

Could happen. I used to have an old desk my uncle built in high school wood shop about 70 years ago that had a 2" thick slab of Cuban mahogany as part of its structure. It was sort of an ugly desk and I let it go during a move of house hold, before I ever conceived of building a guitar. That slab was enough for at least 4 guitar bodies....:(

Luckily, I still have an old coffee table from the same shop class with enough 2" 70 year old Cuban mahogany for two bodies.:)

    Could happen.

wow, with the "live edge" on that top... really looks like a tree... but sort of an artistic tree.  noice.

Thanks Mike. I love the live edge.....but I don't think I can leave it like it is. All those sharp little protrusions look cool and will snag skin and clothes anytime someone passes to close. I have a feeling knocking them off and sanding them flush will result in bird's eye looking figure. Luckily I have lots of drops and scrap from the two previous burl top guitars I built, so I can do some experimenting before committing.

  7. I finally got a Tormek and spent a fair amount of carving time sharpening gouges. Hopefully this will help them last longer. I replaced two more this week from sharpening them down to something less than ideal in length.

And I did take the time to pull the top out and take some mock up shots to remind you guys what the plan is and for me to compare to my mental plans and see if it is actually going the direction I intended.

wow, the delicate branches... vcool.  are you doing some sort of glass top for this?  really emerging.  nice work.

    Thanks.

No glass. this is getting a maple burl slab on top. The last couple of pics in my first post shows it. I realize that was the better part of a year ago....I'll do a mock up with it in the next photo dump to refresh memories and see if it is still going to look like what's in my head.

’m not sure I’d consider it common. It’s a section of one of those gymnastic things that they walk on. Someone cut it up into three sections and put it out for the trash. Probably was several hundred dollars new. So, that middle section has a big height adjustable foot that can really put the squeeze on things 😁

Not common, but even better than I thought! I thought it was a 4x4 and a flange, using bar clamps and the table for the squeeze.

Again, having to figure out what you folks are talking about, I've learned something new! There's only one thing that puzzles me about Mary Kaye: Why was she called "the first lady of rock and roll"? By all the images and videos I could find including the website carrying her Trio's name she most definitely was a lady but the music was far from R&R! Very good music and performed well but more in the style of, say, Frank Sinatra than, say, Chuck Berry.

My first thought was a color from this cosmetic line.........

But you may be on to something.
