    wow. Finishing is one area that I'm sorely lacking experience in. That link taught me a lot, so while I wasn't the intended reader, I do thank you for posting it.

    don't thank me, you're the one building the great looking 5 string. I have a few of them on the table right now. I'm not even a 5 string guy, but once I jumped in, i just jumped right on in. luckily for me its a hobby so no one is waiting on them.

    Just venturing a guess here, but the neck pocket says "lic. by Fender" so I'm thinking a HSS setup or "Fat strat" PG will work out fine. www.greasygroove.com makes every kind of PG you could think of... give em a shot. http://www.greasygroove.com/StratPGStyles.php

    Here's what I've learned about TR's so far... no matter who makes them - I always test them before installing them. Lock em down and torque in both directions. Once they prove to me they work, then I install em. Now- to just never shape one so thin again !

    Thanks for that link.... I know of Allied but have never ordered from them. All my necks have been built with a SM hotrod- I still have one or two left too. I've never gone through to the truss rod rout before, but I also *usually* make pencil marks to follow when shaping - this time I skipped that part. Won't be doing that again. On a side note : the "save" was glued up last night... we'll see how it works out today.

    Glad you see it too. ... and don't read too much into it- your design is your own, and looks very professional. Would love to see a real live version soon.

    The high B and E strings have octave strings along with them . Its tuned like a Fender 6, one octave below a guitar. Having the two ringy strings has some neat sounds. Its really easy to play the intro to 'wherever I may roam' by Metallica, for example. 8 strings, lots of octave stuff going on. Octobass.

    Ehh... To each his own I guess. I see no problem painting over limba of any kind. I'm not a huge fan of black limba per say. My approach was to use the most mottled, streaky, variegated wood I had in stock. On this particular body blank, I do like the look of the end grain. It works well with the motif. I plan on using a black grain fill also. i thought of this as well when looking at it : the grain looks killer on the blank, but how much of that will be left once the shaping/sanding is done ? Just a curiosity I guess. Great theme for a build tho. Iceman indeed.

    I've been working on a save in my head, and I think I may have it.... it makes me wonder though... how many times do I 'save' a neck gone bad ?!? Its a nice neck- bloodwood, elm and cocobolo, but man ! Its really testing me. I think I have it tho... I'm doing up a back strap of maple to cover the burnthru , then I'll reshape the neck. if it fails, I'll make a fire and post the vid.

    I just dented a top by laying it down on the table and not realizing there was a small chunk of bloodwood on the table top under the body. After flipping it over and finding a small piece of BW semi-indented into the swamp ash, I thought I was S.O.L. ..... I'll try the steam method and see if I can reverse it any.

    LOL :-D awesome clip forget AGC and bi-lateral drivers, all we need are two hydrocoptic marzel veins and a drawn reciprocation dingle arm ! you musn't forget the lunar waneshaft.........

    I can't beleive I didn't mention the headstock. I do like the inverse angle at the end, but the 'slot' makes it kind of tuning-forkish. I don't think strength is a huge issue, but finishing might not be too fun inside that little groove. Also, since you're still designing - might want to angle the sides of the HS a little bit more to get straighter string pull. Then again, you might like em just how they are.

    End pin jacks cost money. Holes are free. I'm thinking that area wasn't designed for supporting an output jack / cord and the pressure that they may put out over the years..... I'da still tried to mount it somewhere sturdier on the guitar than there......
