  1. What size do you want and what wood? Call BlueLynx, formerly Austin Hardwoods on Matthis just off Royal lane between Luna and 35E. The Woodcraft in Addison just got some nice Ash in and priced under market, but will need to to gluedup for thickness as it is only 4/4 but if your going more solid color should not matter. Otherwise contact myself via PM or Jon in Ft Worth, I'm sure one of us can hook you up with some wood to your liking. MIke BTW I'm in Farmers Branch
  2. Not sure on a bass but I like small frets on my guitar. I prefer those that are more for a banjo or mandolin. So I guess it's all what feels good!!!! It seems to have a crisper note to me as well? Just my .02cents MK
  3. LMAO!!!!! )))))))) Hi I'm Mike and Im addicted to wood!!!! All Kinds, but maple really suits me. I would love it if???????????????????? I could do something!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO!!! MAN WEAP YOU ARE SO RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!! Funny how we are? MK BTW FENIX, Welcome, I was not trying to make light of your joining. Again Welcome!!! Hope yur stay is enjoyable. MK
  4. Welcome, If you get to Edmonton, let me know. I'll hook you up with my son and you can say hello for me. LOL ))))))))) MK
  5. Let's see? What I do is what feels good!!!! If it feels good, then it's right for me. My first had more swell, but less than any that I had played, it felt good, then I found less swell by removing more material. then it feels better. Just go by what you feel not by what others think you should do. It's all about what you want, It;s your guitar and fitting it to you is what is most important. just my .02 cents MK
  6. if you want to use a martin style truss rod from stewmac then get a bit for 1/2" plywood not a 1/2" bit. they are 1/32" less that a half inch and exactly the right size for the rod. MK
  7. if you are thinking of splining on a new head at the break over point of an LP don't . REmove the fretboard and scarf joint on a new headstock. as the spline will not take the load of the strings. What I mean is that if the break is at the nut or somewhere close. I hope that makes since?, BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!! Otherwise provide pics so we can see what your problem is and then someone can give you the best possilbe advice, MK
  8. I'm glad that others have had the same experience. Cheers to you all!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope someday that we all can meet!!! MIke
  9. Thanks CMA, I would recommend meeting others , you never know what you'll learn. BTW That Q looked great. Mike
  10. Hi everyone, I just wanted say I finally met a PG member today face to face. What a great day. I met GodBlessTexas aka Joseph I must say we had a very nice day and I hope that Joseph had as good of time as I did. We took in the afternoon and Bs'd, went to Charleys Guitars an institution since the 70s, which GBT had not been too, then came back and Jammed for a while over a beer. I want to say it was a pleasure meeting him and great fun. I would recommend that any of you that are close in proximity, that you try and meet, even if there is an age difference. Our next outing is for some choice BBQ (JON YOU READING THIS) We plan on trying to meet up with Jon in Ft Worth soon( if he's willing). Who Knows what's next??? But I will say, I think we had a great time and I greatly appreciated the company and the conversation. Thanks GBT!!!!! Mike
  11. Well let's see? What finish? What grits have you gone through so far up to 1000. Usually until you get to 2000 or better you won't see any shine, unless you look CLOSE from an angle. If all is level and no scratches maybe start polishing out with a buffer, or by hand using polishing cream, then a wax finish. But this all depends on the type of finish what is next. Please eloborate??? MK
  12. JUst saw this thread, My experience with GC is this. My nephew wanted to buy an inexpensive guitar. You all know the one. The squire that I made my first build from using the neck. Well we went down to GC about 2 years ago, he played one and I played it. Was unbeleivable that it did not have much buzz from the singlecoils??? HAH!!! when he decided to purchase they took it in the back saying they needed to set it up. about 30 mins later we get the guitar. It is now payed for within the first 5 mins as it goes back for setup. When we get home I notice that the screws for the pickguard are loose or some missing???? This was not the case when we had possesion of it before the so called (SETUP), let me tell you when that thing was plugged in after getting home, what a howl and buzzing it produced. I called them and they said. ( hey it's a Squire not an American made with higher quality parts, we use filtered power here, What do you expect?) Well I expect similar perfomance as in the store? Well I can't prove it, but I suspect that in order to sell them. ( The old bait and switch with a twist) they switched the pickguard (during the SETUP)with the original Squire and what we played was a setup that PG uses with good electronics. The solder joints for the jack were somewhat questionable in my opinion. Well that's my take on GC and I haven't and will not ever be back. Mike edited to add: had a senior moment last night when I wrote the above, I meant Hum not buzz LOL:))) Gettin older sucks!!

  14. while I am a person that trys to help those that are trying to help us with better and reducsed prices, I have no knowledge on GFs pickups but I do have 4 sets of tuners and It wouldve been nice to have the specs on these listed on the web site. As now I am looking for a .390 to .385 taper reamer within a 1/2" so that I can Mount these tuners, thats with starting at 3/8" mounting hole which is to tight. and 7/16" is waayyyyyy to loose. if you go fractional you will need a 25/64 bit which is impossible to get as a bradpoint. A 10mm is still to large and 9mm is too small. so a 9.7 or 9.8 mm will work (try and find one of those). Otherwise I have been very pleased with GFs parts and am pleased with the tuners as well just makes for more work. Now I'm having to seek out a tool and die company to make the reamer . This will offset the cost of the savings so I might as well have bought the the more expensive brand. and been able to use a bit that was available to buy or one I had. I'm not trying to diss GF but, if standards are not the norm with the product please identify it so the consumer knows this. I sent an email to the GF.com and no response( at least send something back saying ,'drill a 3/8" hole and beat it in with a hammer you dummy' . Now I either have to PLUG HOLES!!!!!! (WHich I have done)On a neck to make it right. Oh well guess I'm just too damn picky about somethings.LOL:)) MIke
  15. I agree that what you explain sounds somewhat risky. Do you have a router? I would assume so if you are a woodworker? I would make a neck template and shim it up at the rear/towards the bridge to make the 4.5 degree angle and then route it out. I'll try and find pic of what I'm descibing but may take a day. Mike
  16. I think that Jerry Garcia had one made in layers. I dont have the site handy, but I know it was one of his favorites.LOL:)) mk
  17. I'm with you MCH, If they want it the way I make it, so be it. If not someone else will.buy it. Most people don't have a clue when it comes to cabinets so they think, I want this and I want that? That's fine to a point, but there are rules to abide by as for functionalty and what works from a construction stand point, as well as asthetic design. So I'm with ya on that. Man I love working with WOOD!!! Mike
  18. Thanks Maiden, I wish I could show the rest cause it's really cool. but it does nothing for guitar building, LOL:)) MK
  19. JM I have the grizz 14" ultimate with riser and is a very good saw for the $ I will be upgrading soon to a 17" or larger for resawing and using the 14 " for smaller work. My upgrade will most likely be anotner Grizzly as well. Unless I can find a great deal on somethng considered Much higher end like a Laguna. Just my .02cents MK
  20. BTW: I was asked privately about the Grizzly Radius Jig, and yes my prototype was based somewhat on this for Fretboard radius using a router table instead of an expensive belt sander Grizzly offers a belt sander attachment that does the same thing as my prototype but only fits one particular belt it sells for $400+. Therefore the idea for the fretboard radius is not new as is using a pendulum either, just a different type of machine doing the work, thus the reason for sharing this with you. Now the mods and changes I have made (which I have not shown) are totally outside what could be done with the sanding jig, or a pure pendulim setup so my quest for patent. Just an FYI if anyone is wondering. Mike
  21. I'm afraid that the epoxy may cause you a problem, not sure though? Shellac bonds to wood but does not like some types of finish (some polys dont work well with shellac, not sure about epoxy based). I have never tried to use shellac over epoxy so??? I would try this on a scrap piece first before you try it on the real thing as you might not like the reaction. Just a thought and my .02cents and I use a lot of Shellac LOL:)))IT IS My favorite finish but requires some care. Mike
  22. Wow Mike. Let us know how the patent process goes. I've heard that they can be expensive. YMMV. I also appreciate the copyright notice. Lord knows how I feel about copyright infringement. Good luck with it! Thanks, I do know it is a long expensive process. Looks like 7k or more(most likely more) and most likely a year or better. and that means nothing gained only that I get the patent ( if all goes well) and still no return on the dollars, so we will see what happens???? Oh well the process begins!!! MK
  23. I get ya Mattia and it wasn't meant to be a bashing. I understand their need for rules, but I also felt that Mike was trying to do something nice for some friends and got insulted for it. Obviously, it was against their rules, no biggie, but I bet it could have been handled much better than it was, especially considering the favor Mike was doing for them. I bet Einstein wasn't that thoughtful I had checked out that site before I ever came here and it has a ton of great buiders and as you mentioned an immense amount of information, all of that considered it still doesn't mean you can't pm and talk with someone about how to make a compromise before they become insulted, by erasing everything. Everything with his sharing went smooth here and everyone was grateful and I will bet that many of the people MIMF will come here to find the thread because it is highly valuable information for a builder. If it was a worthless post or something pointless no big deal, but he was genuinely trying to do something nice and that bothered me. I am glad the whole thing is resolved and meant no disrespect to that community, but as I said many of their own members will likely be bothered that they missed out on such good info and will be strolling by PG . Thanks for the support JM,Mucho appreciated, I think this is now a dead issue and we need to move forward. I have asked Setch if he might contact Deb and see if we can find a way to share this with MIMF as well. Thanks again, sincerely Mike
