  1. I used Bill Lawrence noiseless pickups in two Strats I assembled and they sound great. Absolutely no hum or noise. I am also interested in mini humbuckers. I have a Yamaha semi hollow body with minis in it and they are great. Warmer than a strat and very clear. More output than the Bill Lawrence 280's. I'm also looking for aftermarket mini's that don't cost an arm and a leg. GFS makes mini's but I don't know how they sound. If you end up buying minis I would be interested in your opinion.
  2. i called Warmoth but they said it probably would not work. I tried to cancel the transaction but it was too close to the closing time. I had mailed the seller on E-bay about the neck and didn't recieve a response untill after the auction closed. He said it is a custom neck and it fits perfectly. We'll see. The pickups and neck are got to be worth $200. Anyway it's my son's money and he wanted to buy it no matter what. May be a lesson.
  3. Interesting... goes to show how many differences there are with guitars. It's the single biggest reason I have customers ship their bodies to me when they want a new neck. Other than a Warmoth made Jackson copy body, I've never had one in here with a narrow neck. My comment is based on that experience. Best thing to do guitar101 is to measure the widest point of your neck pocket. You could also contact Warmoth and ask too. -Doug Good idea I will. As long as the neck pocket is tight and the right length it I guess it should work ahould work. This guitar has a sustaniac. He tried one in a store and it's pretty amazing.
  4. Does anyone know if a Strat neck fits a Jackson Dinky?? My son is looking to buy a modified Jackson but he can't see it before purchase. Concerned about the fit in the neck pocket. and intonation. The replacement neck is a 24 fret Warmoth ...
  5. Look up water slide decal paper on the internet. You can scan your picture and then print on the decal paper using an inkjet. Then transfer the printed plastic film to where you want the graphic. May be awkward on a large picture but possible.
  6. The gauge of wire isn't causing the hum it's most likely the ground that is the problem. Double check that the tremolo is grounded and all the pots and the pickguard foil.
  7. That is really nice. I love the natural wood look and the lighter colours. Good job...
  8. I ran across an article on guitar speakers a while back when I was researching amplifiers. My son's Behringer amp died and he needed a replacement. Anyway I came across this and thought it makes interesting reading. http://www.watfordvalves.com/cgi-bin/docum...streport_40.pdf
  9. I've also used Turtle Wax rubbing compounds on Minwax Poly and also on auto clear coat. I haven't had any problems.
  10. Probably baloney. Here is a link to the Bill Lawrence website where he explains some facets of pickup design. http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickupology/Contents.htm
  11. i meant mono cable. sorry about that. I suggested wiring direct to the cable from the amp in case the jack on the guitar is wired incorrectly. If the problem is still there then at least you have eliminated the jack. It may be helpfull if you list the problem and where you touch the jack to cause the problem to go away and what you have changed or done to this point so everything is in one post. It's hard to get a handle on what is going on when the thread is large. Probably best done in piont form. I'm getting curious..
  12. Then try eliminating the jack. A stereo plug will have the sleeve in two parts.
  13. Yeah I went to the EMG site and I saw that. OK eliminate the plug. Unsolder the jack from the amp to the guitar and connect the shield to the black wires that goes to the battery and to the circuit common. Connect the center wire from the amp to the signal wire (hot wire ) from the EMG circuit. Plug the cable into your amp and turn it on. What happens?? By the way are you using a stereo plug to plug into your guitar because it won't work..
  14. The picture you have does it show three terminals that can be soldered to or is it my imagination?
  15. When I finished wiring my son's guitar I had massive hum and a weak signal. I had inadavertatly wired the output jack backwards. The terminal that carries the signal in to the amp was grounded and the ground was going into the amp. Check it out.
  16. He is.The logo "Shan Yin" means Compassionate Cause in Tibetan. Last year he took vows in the Tibetan philosophy at a monastery in Vancouver. Prior to that we had Tibetan monks stay at our house for a week. My son was interested in Buddhism and I agreed to have them stay with us. They were on a tour of North America and needed a place to stay in our town. I'm not a Buddhist but it's a great philosophy So when we went to visit my daughter in Vancouver he took the vows at a monastary there. I was surprised that the monks agreed to it but they did. He was 16 at the time. I still have to set the intonation properly and install a tremolo cover. The Wilkinson tremolo has the strings staggered through the block and the cover I have doesn't line up with the holes. The tuners are locking Grovers. I love them. They have very fine control when tuning. I noticed that the string holes are very close to the peg head about the same distance away as locking Sperzels so he may be able to get away without string trees. The G string may have to have the slot filed slightly but everything else seems OK. Thanks for the kind comments.
  17. Here is a link that explains it. http://www.tpub.com/neets/book1/chapter1/1q.htm
  18. ( the same as the 20k resistor alone ) that should read 10k resistor.
  19. I finished up a Strat I assembled for my son. I bought the neck and body and finished the neck with minwax poly. The body I sanded and prepped and took to a body shop to paint. There isn't any place for me to spray in the winter. I tried outside by warming the body and paint up but it didn't work out. I used a custom mixed auto metallic from Napa. The next guitar I build I will do from scratch. I have a semi hollow body that I like. I might try copying it but making the neck and body. Here are some pics of the Strat. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e82/bugla/IMG_0902.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e82/bugla/IMG_0906.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e82/bugla/IMG_0909.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e82/bugla/IMG_0938.jpg
  20. You can go four resistors in series 2.5k ohms each at 1/2 watt to get what you want or as the post below said four in parallel at 40k ohms at 1/2 watt each. In series the current through each resistor is the same as the 20k resistor alone but the voltage drop across each one is 1/4 of the source voltage. . The power dissipated across each resistor is P (power)=E (voltage) x I (current). Each resistor shares part of the total power used in the circuit. In the parallel circuit the Voltage across each resistor is the same but the current through each resistor is 1/4 of the total. It's all good..
  21. Try this http://www.fetishguitars.com/ and this: http://www.fetishguitars.com/html/wandre/o...davoli_dan.html
  22. I got this from this link. http://reviews.ebay.com/Buying-a-Yamaha-Ac...000000000965950 Each Yamaha guitar has a serial number stamped on the back of the neck, inside the body of the guitar. It is viewable looking through the sound hole, where the neck meets the top of the guitar. The numbers are typically eight digits. The serial number on my FG-260 twelve-string is 30710583. Yamaha serial numbers repeat themselves every ten years. The first digit in the number is the year; therefore, mine could be from '53, '63', '73, '83, '93', or 2003. That really narrows it down, no? Going back to the historical chart in the product brochure, I can determine that the FG-260 was produced from 1972-1973. Mine then was produced in 1973. The next four numbers, "0710," are the date of manufacture: July 10th. The last three are the "item" number. Yamaha is pretty closed-lipped about this one; were there 583 FG-260's produced on that date or in that year? Is it number 583? Out of 583? Or, out of 10 bazzillion? To date, I haven't gotten an answer, nor have I found non-Yamaha sources to narrow it down.
  23. Man what is your problem? No one has to answer you at all.
