  1. I thought both tools would be useful but for carving tops an angle grinder would work just as good if not better than the power cutter, in my opinion.
  2. I think using the band saw would take longer. My proccess is, 1: Mark at nut and heel where the truss rod starts 2: Draw a line slightly under the marks across the side of th blank (with enough space so the rod doesn't break the back of the neck, I make dual action rods so that's a possibility) 3: Use the disk sander (I have used the Rigid sander you mentioned as well) and start on the sides first to round them in) grinders work good too. 4: Mark the contures at the heel and nut and rough them with an oscilating sander then finalize with a rasp 5: Sand with 120 grit, buff with 220 then I use 0000 steel wool to get a smooth feel to it, that way even if it looks rough it feels smooth, I have had many people compliment on how smooth and fast they play for not being sanded to finer grits. I don't even buff the finish on the neck, I just spray lacquer on then (cabot aerosol cans) then rub between coats with the steel wool.

  4. Scarfs and templates would of interest to me. I usually just do straight headstock and draw what I need on the wood for templates. The eight string build will be interesting. Where can you get 8 string bridges besides hipshit? preferably a floyd?
  5. I would like to get an MIDI pedal, it would make things a lot easier for me. Where did you get that spring cover from by the way?
  6. That's why I quit routing bodies with templates. I now just use a belt sander and only use my router for the neck pocket and pickup/control cavities.
  7. Maybe by that time I will have the paperwork submited to Seymour Duncan and I will be a dealer for them and you can get some decent pups for that guitar I have been meaning to get that paperwork in for a few months but I've been too busy with other things.
  8. I took the wrapping off yesterday to get a look and it looks like it's healing pretty good. However; I got to see the xray when I went in to get the stitches checked and found out not only is the bone broken, which I already knew, but it is shattered. If you know what a gut hook on a knife looks like that's what the end of my bone looks like and then it breaks into what the doctors called "Y" breaks and so they said I now have three extra weeks for the bone to heal. Luckily I can still get back to building in a couple weeks now but I won't be able to play guitar or anything for two months. Why would you want to route out screwdriver holes if there is already a slot to slide the screwdriver in? Or am I thinking of something different?
  9. Awesome ! Thanks for that link. Hope your finger makes a full and fast recovery. No problem. There are several stores on Ebay where you can find good prices on things like that but you just have to look. I was in a rush this morning so I couldn't put a few more links. I searched for "Jem tremolo cover" to get the one in the link. I hope my finger heals fast too. I think I pissed off some customers when I told them about that but hey I can't work on guitars with it how it is so yeah.
  10. http://cgi.ebay.com/IBANEZ-RG-SERIES-TREMOLO-TREM-BACK-COVER-/180608193440?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2a0d1653a0 You can find them on ebay. I put a link to one in this post. Some ebay stores sell them pretty cheap as well. Look at the STRATosphere store I have seen them there before.
  11. Yeah. I cut halfway through the bone so it was pretty close. I was cutting binding strips and the strip kicked back and up, I caught it but it fell into the saw and the blade caught it and pulled my hand down before I could move it. I was so fast I didn't even realize what happened, I just thought I got my hand hit really hard ... until I noticed my hand was covered in blood. It's stitched up and in a splint. It all goes to show that even with guards there is still the chance of accidents. Definately gives you a new look at how dangerous and how fast things can happen with those.
  12. Looks good. I definately like that faux binding effect. The body looks great and those inlays are some good work ... Wish I could build now, I made a trip to the ER today due to a tablesaw incident whick almost left me without a left index finger ...
  13. I have looked at that pedal in the past. I almost bought it but I decided that since I know nothing about MIDI I would like to learn how it works and build my own. Devnull, the would be a nice footswitch to use but sadly I don't have a need for something that big
  14. thanks i will look at that site. tim, i looked at those befoe an they don't have the right string guages, they need to get pretty low and musiciansfriend doesn't sell them. thanks though.
  15. I am looking to get some custom strings for an acoustic I am going to start building. It won't be a standard 6 string though so I need to be able to get custom guaged strings. Anyone know where I can get some?
  16. Looks good. I was looking for this thread the other day to see if you were still working on it.
  17. Haha! There's a good possibility of that happening, though i will be in Minneapolis. Thanks for the compliment. Nice, Minneapolis is still about four hours from me. I am about 60 miles from the Canadian border. It would be a fun trip though to come see this guitar and your idea for it.
  18. I really like this. Maybe you should bring it up to Minnesota so it can get stollen by me . That sucks about your phone though.
  19. No it is just a book on all kinds of vintage guitars from acoustics to electrics. I did read online though in the gibson forum that there were some prototypes originally made by Gibson but they were either destroyed or burned, both of which seem kind of extreme so I don't know how much I agree with that but yeah they did re-issue it eventually (not sure on the year) EDIT: haha I just noticed after I clicked submit the picture you posted has the year on it
  20. sure about that - they certainly designed it at the same time but definitive proof of a 58 moderne is hard to come by - and gibbons aint sharing! I thought I read somewhere that Gibson made a few back when the V and Explorer were introduced but discontinued them because they weren't selling at all or something. The book I read that from also said any original moderne before Gibson re-introduced them is considered the "holy grail" to guitar collectors
  21. Well now I am legal to sell online with a business name so Once I finish building my website (which has been on hold for months) I will have an online store set up on there and on Ebay for selling Seymour Duncan pickups if the paper work is approved. As for my guitar building, I don't think I am good enough yet to market them so I won't be setting up a custom shop name or whatever you want to call it ... in fact I wouldn't have time to anyways now. I am going to college for guitar and violin building and repair so I won't have time to build conventionally anyways, otherwise I am just building for friends and doing repairs.
  22. Well if you are interested in Seymour Duncan pickups I have paperwork pending with them to become a dealer so maybe we can get something figured out down the line. I am not sure if we are heading over there yet. I think we are but I am not sure yet.
  23. I like this one a lot, probably my favorite of yours so far and very clean. Once I get my seven string done I might do one like this you will have to send me the plans if you can. What kind of pickup is in it? I was also trying to figure out how you got this done so early in the morning since it's 7:30 a.m. here ... then I Remembered the eight hour time difference.
  24. Can't wait to see this one done. Where did you get the plans from or did you just draw it out?
  25. Very nice looking guitar so far. I think I may just have to try and build a router jig like yours, what were the prices for that aluminum?
