  1. It should be strong enough. You might want to inlay something into the base of the peghead (as outlined here), just to make sure it's strong enough...can't hurt anything Devon
  2. Where does nitrocellulose lacquer fall? Devon
  3. Inlay some of these into the base of the neck as described by Frank Devon
  4. Ok...not much personal experience here, but it seems to me like the change in tone would only come from having to remove less wood (I guess you could use a scratchplate with the same routings as a no scratchplate version if you really liked) for the control cavity. It may not even be less wood, just from a different area. My guess is that it's a bit brighter, but again, all it is is an educated guess. Devon
  5. What do you mean mount directly to the body? Do you mean as opposed to a scratchplate? Devon
  6. Can you spray any finish over the wood filler? Would it have to be oil based? Devon
  7. reranch.com carries both too if I'm not mistaken. Devon
  8. What're some good brands of spokeshaves? And the models? Thanks, Devon
  9. Good Deal...I thought it was through to the primer, but when I just went and looked at it, it's not. I guess I dreamed that up. Can you steam out dents with an iron like nitro? Devon
  10. The pawn shops around here are ridiculously priced usually...except the guitars, he doesn't know much about them lol Devon
  11. Thanks, I've heard of Hot stuff from the Guitar Player's Guitar Repair book by Dan Erlewine. I'll try some of that other stuff. Is it possible to color the glue so that it will match the rest of the body? I realize it's clear, but in one spot on my LP (foreign made with poly finish), right near the output jack the previous owner dropped it and it chipped all the way down to the primer. Devon
  12. I have two guitars with poly finishes that are fairly dented. One's a clear acoustic, and one's a black electric. I know I probably can't use the lacquer touch up sticks with lacquer melt, so what can I use to repair them? thanks, Devon
  13. Shimming works, just don't shim too much, or the neck will become unstable Devon
  14. Let me know how that goes...I'm wanting to try to bind my purpleheart guitar with bocote. http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.ph...?showtopic=5529 Devon
  15. I saw that, and I know how he did it, I'm just worried about bending it. I want it on the body, not the neck. The fretboard is already gonna be bocote, so bocote binding would be a little pointless. Again, I guess I can just try steaming it really well beforehand, but I'd still be worried about how it would work. Devon
  16. Is is possible to use Bocote as binding material? If so how thick, and how to use it? steam it then glue? I'd really like to try this if it's possible. Devon
  17. I guess you really didn't want veneer, you wanted thin wood. I know www.rockler.com sells some thin exotics. They don't have ebony, but you might want to check them out. Devon
  18. I don't use the pattern bits, I just use the 1/4" flute bits with the same sized shank. You've gotta be a little more careful down to a certain depth, but after that you can just let the shank ride along the template. Saves a lot of money on bits . Devon
  19. so you can have extra space in the cavity and use the 1/4" bit? Devon
  20. I've been looking for a very very long time. It's really hard to find a good place for veneer. Lemme check my bookmarks. Looks like the one I found most helpful is down now. Lots of different veneer available here. There is some Macassar Ebony, and some Wenge there too. Rosewood available here Hope you find this helpful Devon
  21. It is possible to make them without a router. I'm assuming you at least have a drill or drill press. Carve out the majority of waste wood with your drill, and then clean up the rest of the cavity with a chisel. Hope that helps . Devon
  22. How'd you manage to do that with a chisel? The only thing I can think of is really dull chisels . Devon
