  1. does it have all the springs on the back of the term?
  2. i know this is old and youve already decided on pickups but on my les paul i have a dimarizo paf pro and it sounds awesome in the neck and its passive so i guees its some thing to think about. ps in my bridge i have a super dst.
  3. other than the finished neck it sounds good. if this were my project id finish the neck in linseed oil and keep it lubed up with old E lemon oil or some thing close to it. id also add a single coil and a tone knobs just for the single coil just for the difference in sounds.
  4. i was at an antque (i cant even spell it) store today and i saw a sky blue (not the orginal finish looks like house paint) lotus les paul style guitar. it was 100 and it looked to be in very good shape over all. it has 98% of its orignal parts (minus one of the saddles for the tune o matic, the cover that goes around the switch and the top cap on the switch, you know the little plastic peice.) well what in wondering is if this guitar is worth the 100 as an experimental guitar for both customization and finishing? and also what the best wat to find a date on it? is there anyway i can pin down a year for this thing? it looks earily 70's maybe late 60's. thanks for understanding
  5. i have a very nice blonde les paul copy. it has a clear finish over a maple top and a very maple neck and finger board. it has black block inlays on the finger board, gold hardware, cream coloed almost coffie coloerd pickup rings, black dimarzio pickups, and a very nice vintage white and black dinding around the body. now i need new knobs, a new switch and a new pickguard for it. what im having trouble with is deciding what color i should get? should i get gold metal knobs or what? thanks in advance
  6. off topic but still gonna say it. with this tailpiece i dont need a tune o matic right? this bridge is awsome. im wondering if i could convert my normal ibanez single term to this. and how that would be done.
  7. im not sure of the title but i saw a book at barnes and noble that was called "guitar making" it was a very good book covering alot of tings.
  8. off topic but still gonna say it. i have a set of extra light eilixirs on my washburn acoustic and i love them. they are smooth and sleek with a nice bright tone. as for the electrics im not real sure about those, the last set i had looked like an iguana tail after like 3 weeks. erine ball slinkys are ok. and who ever this guy is needs a major kick in the pants. as for you termolo just remember to shim up under the normal tuned string tenson (standard or what ever) and bring each string up to the right tune before starting a new one. (which is why i hate termolos) and dont lock the nut until after youve tuned it a couple of times (usually 5 for me). good luck i hope you like those strings.
  9. a$170 dollar guitar being crap i dont believe it a single bit. ive played on guitars selling for $1700 dollars that didnt feel this good but i will agree the pickups are garbage. ive looked at the neck and the pro looked at the neck. it has a very light foward bow in it. i held down the g string between the 1st and 12th fret and there is about a millimeter of space. which is fine. he told me that raising the saddles would help some but didnt go on about it. i did chage the strings like i said. (i had either ghs low tunes xl gauge or erine ball super slinkys on it). now my next question is if i put a new nut on it with a shallow string gouge cut it it will i be able to take the action lower in the higher frets?
  10. i have a $170 dollar ibanez start thats around 6 years old. i really love the feel of this guitar. it has a wide neck (1 3/4) and a wide string base over the pick ups. the stock pickups are giveing me trouble but hey it was cheap. well its time for an up date. i took it out the other day and noticed my action is way high. so i took it to my local shop (i could have done it my self but i wanted to pro touch) to have them check out the truss rod. it was fine but i was getting way too much buzz on the middle frets. i had them adjust the saddles on the one way termolo. well my action was in orbit now. so i put on a very heave gauge string (13-52 ) and that killed the buzz, i redid the saddles my self and got the action to ok but still too high. if i go any lower it wont sound on any fret about 15. so what should i do to get my action perfect? do i put a shim or two under the neck and bolt it back on? this guitar has the single action termolo (i forget what its called) with the string through the base of the term on the back. is there any thing nbon termolo i can convert it too that will allow me to gewt the action back to where it should be? would this axe accept a stop bar and tune o matic? is that even the right way to go? ps its a ibanez gio strat with a few slight finish mods to it. please help me obi wan kenobi your my only hope! lol j/k about old ben
  11. when i was in high school i worked part time after school in a cabnet shop. they wouldnt let me do the big things (use the saws and the like dam insurance) but i learned a lot from watching and helping when i could. as for a second job and using most of my free time for woodworking? it sounds alot better than watching tv or playing games. i dont really ever want to have kids so im pretty safe on that front. im still looking into it so it might be a course to go but maybe not yet.
  12. im messing around here but...... take a ruler and a digital camera to your local shop and take the pics you need. it might work.
  13. it makes the sound of the tap. the bridge pick up isnt making the same sound, and i live in an apartment building so i cant play at very high volums. i dont think the pickguard is loose but ill check it. question what is potting? and what do i do for it?
  14. i just got my strat back from the music store today and was playing hells bells to test it out. i put my pick selector on just the neck pick up and played it sounded ok. i tapped on the wood just above the neck pickup and it sounded through the amp. in fact if i tap anywhere on the body its self while just the neck pick up is on i get the same thing. my strat is a $170 ibanez gio strat with the orginal powersound humbuckers in it. it is my favorite feel wise but not sound wise. ive had it for about 6 years. is there anyway to figure out why its doing this? any way to stop it? if i put new pickups in it would that go away or is it set in there? thanks for any help.
  15. so my post was confusing. like i said i dont like them because i think they are a pain in the ass. i like to change my tunings on the fly so it kinda gets in the way to me. i did take the time to set the one i had up exactly right and it was great caused it stayed in tune for like 3 weeks no problem. but i always ran into the same problem of needing to shim up, un-do the nut, reset the bridge screws, tune. relock the nut undo the shims and retune with the brdige pins. it never seemed worth it to me. i play a lot of stuff from classic rock to classic metal and blues and jazz, but ive never really had a extream need to use one. i use my standard termolo on my ibanez some times but mostly i like to stick with stop bars and tune o matics. slain its good that at least some people enjoy using them. if you use it its alot better than having it and not using it. 2-3 gigs a week? where can i get an mp3 or wma of you and your band? hook us all up.
  16. im kinda new around here but id like to add my 2 cents. i Hate floyd rose with a locking nut. i HATe them. they are a pain in the ass for something thats not going to be used much. now if you like them id say go with the good one. cause a cheap one is just going to detune and strip. a really nice one form a good company and if it sucks you can send it back. just my two cents.
  17. im actually looking into lutherire schools now thinking it could be a good way to go in life.
  18. how much would a peice of tight flamed maple aprox 2 foot x 3 foot x 5 inches and a matching peice about 4 foot x 6 inches by 8 inches run? with shipping? i guess i better bust out the phone book cause i need to build a new v body.
  19. i have an old crown calssical i got for my 13th birthday. it has always been a nice guitar and its starting to fall apart. the need needs the be reset and the about 1/3 of the top and back are comming up. it also has a chip outfir part of the top (deep chip all the way through to the cavity). no i know my dad dint pay much for it (less than 60 i think it was used) and i took it to a repair shope and he said all the repairs would be around $100. is it possible to just do it my self? when i trying to fix the top should i just take the whole top off and remove all the old glue? how do i get the rest of the glue off around the neck and top/sides/back so i wont damage the wood any more? thanks ill have more questios about this guitar its very valubale sentimantal wise.
  20. im kinda new to this but right now right now its. finish this lp copy fix or redo this V i bought for 50 bucks at a pawn shop. (maybe ill remake it into neck thru body and mount the pickups right to the neck) try and find more info on this really old no name bass and maybe fix it. (im looking for some one who does good wood work in the sf bay area) refinish and reneck this 60 something coral hornet (it has 3 lip stick pickups that are a pain to find i started about 5 years ago on it) put new pickups in my $170 ibanez start ( i love this thing it looks like **** but plays like butter) fix my crown classical acoustic and refinsih it. and more a mostlikly to come.
  21. heres a pic of the problem. i need to refinish anyway.
  22. no pic yet ill be a regular here for a while so itll come. its not a gibson ill say that now. it cam with an ibanez neck and this nasty green finish on it (spray paint i think) and i thinkits the wrong neck any way cause its a 19 fret neck. soon ill post pic.
  23. i have a flying V i bought at a pawn shop. i was looking over it and found that it has two pickup slots and the neck one was covered in bondo. i removed the bondo only to find that the little strip of wood inbetween the neck pickup and the neck joint was cracked and it soon fell out. now i have all the peices to it. can i use some wood glue to fix it or should i just start looking for wood to craft a new body?(the shape is very akward anyway.) thanks
  24. no pick ups when i got it but when i heard about it i was going to stick some gibson 57's (maybe havnt decided yet) in it.
  25. im wondering if i got ripped off? i cant find anythnig but a 12 acoustic reviw on ivar johnson. ps i paid $60 for it
