  1. Here is all you newbs, pros, and amateurs alike guie to DIY pick ups from your friends at Stew Mac. STEW MAC newsletters I hope this helps.
  2. I dont know if I really want to rebuild a 6 inch practice amp.. I suppose I could easily place that into a cavity, but I wonder how I would go about powering it.
  3. I guess if you were able to leech wood from a solid table or even a piano top you could. It doesn't seem like it would be very cost effective to walk down to your local wood shop and get a piece like that. Go find a solid, one piece table or something or look in the paper/craigslist/etc.
  4. I have one of those Gorilla preamps from back when I first started to play. The cone got crushed thanks to the cheap fabric "grille", the particle board face busted out, and the wires to the speaker keep coming unsoldered. Yeah, I could fix it again, but I was wondering if you could turn this little piece into some kind of pre amp. It's small, compact and lightweight? Am I dreaming the impossible dream again or does someone want to buy a cheap project?
  5. I always figured that it was a piece of flat steel stock with a bobbin on both sides shaped like an "I" beam, wrapped 10000 times and a bar magnet of the other side.
  6. Ack! What can I get in that length instead that would make a good fingerboard? The neck is some kind of spotted maple.
  7. If you can't find anyone in the UK, I got someone in the US who will be interested! W00T!
  8. Well, I was dead set on using ebony for my upright project, but after seeing that bubinga closeup I am interested in that stuff too now. Oh, now I have to choose! Which will be better economically?
  9. I know that I'm a nickel short and an hour late here, but this isnt as big of a waste of time as some may think. I was searching around about glue info on the forum and almost started a new thread until I found this one. This actually has a lot of useful knowledge from actual users of these particular products. For once we have a thread on the subject that did not dissolve into a screaming match or pissing contest resulting in hard feelings. If I may suggest that this particular thread get pinned for future reference so that no more threads are needlessly started on the subject of Glue.
  10. Hey do you have any 34.5 inch lengths available in any species? I need a good fingerboard for an upright.
  11. Alright, looking in closer detail someone has already attempted a glue job on the inside, but horribly messed it up. I guess I will have to sand and lay a thinned piece inside glued against that area to reinforce it. The bottom of the neck in the heel region has a similar split. Epoxy/filler/sand time.
  12. Alright, so I came across an upright neck on the 'bay for pennies and I just had to snatch it up. I thought it was odd because the guy said it was a "modern art conversation piece" that he bought from a luthier in Germany. I wait anxiously for my new project neck to show up and it arrives today. I frantically tear open the box and inside is my maple(?) hand carved neck. Then I notice this and then this In my most homer-esque scream I realize indeed this is why it had been considered a conversation piece. "It's still good! It's still good" I guess injecting epoxy in going to have to be in order!
  13. I got one. A guy at work asked if I could look at his four string for him. He kept complaining that the G kept buzzing when he played. So I get his guitar and its practically out of the bag. I play it open, nothing, I play it exclusively, nothing. I was about to pack it up when I touched the string and it fretted slightly. The problem, I wasn't pushing the string all the way down with my pinky. I asked him how he played that string and he said with his pinky of course. He was so new he hadn't developed any strength in his little finger! I lowered the action of his string about a few mm and hand it back, no charge. He goes on like, "superb work, a whole world of difference!" I tell him it was on the house and I just slightly twisted two screws. "No no man, I ALWAYS pay me debts. Here's five bucks!"
  14. Every time someone comes in, it's like an AA meeting. My name is Ryan and...I'm a luthierie addict.
  15. Okay, after reviewing that site, the guy seems to have a very coherent design. He amps his piece using a piezo under saddle pickup. I've bought one of those before, except it cost $40 for a cheap one. I figured I'd have to spend a little more on something like that when I had an idea. After looking for DIY piezo and coming across this when I got the idea of hitting up mouser/radio slack for functional piezo elements. That would knock about another $60 or so bucks off the project by going this method. Would this work out for an upright bass?
  16. GregP, you nailed it! That exactly what I meant! Yeah, his construction is based wholly on the original style bass neck with a thinning solid body. I want a different style body of course. I wonder what his dimensions between the fingerboard and body are...Wait he does have a clickable sketch with full dimensions listed! o_O Wow!
  17. Maybe someone should comment on this, but I found it through a DIY site. CLiCK How good is this?
  18. Maybe you could either sand that sucker down? or I guess maybe lightly carve out a little wood and put in some kind of faux splines? As long as that glue joint holds up and you are just looking to cover up that gash.
  19. auto paint stripper in an aerosol can from walmart. Takes off paint in five minutes. Get a scraper to help, the stuff reduced finish to gum. Best stuff I've ever used.
  20. Well, I want to retain the feel of my upright but compact it down to a portable size. If I join the neck to a body using a set neck approach with a solid body, I retain the feeling of playing that neck and get something I can actually fit in my back seat. Either way, it'll be an experiment nonetheless.
  21. Went to the wood store the other day...wood is expensive!!! argh. I have an upright neck on the line now, I guess I can mount that onto a body as per my original plan.
  22. well to be really specific, no it isnt like a real berimbau. Technically its a bass electric berimbau. I can achieve that tinnier sound I believe if I use a regular guitar string versus a bass A string. You're right it does have some aspects of the whamola because you can change the pitch by pulling back (tightening the string) and pushing (loosening the string). If I use my cry baby on it I can get that "ah" and "oh" sounds that a real one can make. The only problem is that my two year old keeps jacking the stick I use to strike the string. sigh. The whole purpose was to create something different based on the original, and I think I have done that! :D Thanks everyone.
  23. Thanks to IbanezFreak666 I have the sample here. Forgive the lack of playing style, as I have not really developed one for such an experimental instrument.
  24. dont ask... I play the berimbau with a stick and flex it to make the differnent tones. As soon as I can find a host site, I'll post a sound bite.
