  1. you shouldnt have a problem because you are not being exposed to the wood. And im not an ibanez fan and tend not to use them so i cant answer ur question about them. -RAF
  2. man the carvin neck is so freakin sweet. i think on the next project i will be uilding my own also. this neck has inspired me to try and make something just as nice. also we are still having problems with this stupid hurricane that hit us this past week. maybe ill be able to get into the shop next weekend...*fingers-crossed*. im glad you like the design. thanks for the comments. -RAF
  3. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/thewrathofraf/album?.dir=/e20e theres a link to some pictures of my sharkfin v. carvin 7-string neck alder wings 1 duncan invader humbucker TOM bridge with stop tail piece 1 volume pot esp tuners dunlop strap locks paint is gonna be charcoal grey with black outline the progress on this one is gonne be pretty slow seeing as how i have to use a friends shop and getting htere is difficult. plus theres a hurricane comin so it may be some time before i can get in there. ill post more pics as i progress. thanks for checkin it out. -RAF
  4. Man I am digging that black fading to red finish. I am planning on a black fading to a charcoal grey finish. I like it. Very nice work. -RAF
  5. I think a glossary of guitar terms would be way better than an FAQ. When i got started, my biggest problem was remembering terms. I would forget and have to use the search to look up trussrod stuff and never find it cuz i forgot what it was called. And i remember readeing about an AANJ somewhere and thinking "what the heck is that!?" So I think a glossary is a good idea. FAQ? Won't hurt I suppose. -RAF
  6. I used a FLoyd with locking tuners and no locking nut on one of my 7-strings for years and never had a problem. I abuse the whammy like crazy too and never had a problem with the guitar coming out of tune. -RAF
  7. haha ya i c your point on the icon. My concern about that placement was having it affect access to the upper frets, but i guess ill have to wait and c how it works out. Thanks. -RAF
  8. Quick question...where would I put the strap peg on a randy rhoads neck through, I got a place for the bottom one, what about the top one? Thanks. -RAF
  9. I bought some body blanks off ebay for my neck through about a month ago. Any way, one of the blanks has warped. I suppose the guy didnt dry it as well as he said to have. So now I have an alder body blank thats warped. I used the search for a few things and couldnt find an answer to my question. First...can I still use the blank? would it be best to just go to Home Depot and use their planer to straighten it out? Also how can I prevent the wood form warping again later on? Thanks for any advice. -RAF
  10. I have used the one from guitarpartsdepot.com. It works perfect. -RAF
  11. Ya I definitely think a different body design is the way to go. Metallica is (IMO) the greatest band of all time, but i honestly think that looks ridiculous(no offense). I have considered this design but it would be very unplayable and unbalanced. -RAF
  12. hmm...that brings up another question. I am having some one airbrush a finish onto the guitar. some crgraphic that i have in mind and am in the process of drawing. would it be fine if i just did the 2 cans of clear over the graphic? or would i need some thing to protect the graphic before the clear goes on? -RAF
  13. I checked out the search and found a few answers but nothing that really suited exactly what i was lookin for. Basically i have a few questions on finishing my project. 1) Does alder or maple need a grain filler? 2) How many cans of lacquer would you say is enough to finish a guitar? How many coats? i think thats all i had left after searching. Thanks guys. -RAF
  14. Hi. im tryin to build a copy of the alexi laiho guitar. i am modifying it tho to make a 7 string. all the parts and wood is on the way. i was wondering if any one knew the measurements for like the wings or had any templates for this guitar. I was just gonna plan something similar but i would rather have exact. thanks in advance. -RAF
  15. I like GHS Boomers. I use the zakk wylde for down tuning cuz they maintain the tension. I have tried many a string over the last 8 years and have found those to last the longest and sound the best on my guitars. I tried elixirs and did not like them at all. I think this coating stuff isnt worth it. Might as well just spend the 5 bucks and get a new set of strings. -RAF
  16. you will probably have to fill and redrill. -RAF
  17. my cousin has an s570 and a 7 string s both with emgs. he just routed a small cavity for the batteries on the back of both guitars between the trem cavity and the bottom strap lock. that should work with out a problem. just dont route too deep. -RAF
  18. this shouldnt be too bad of a task. serch through the tutorials im sure theres somethin in there. -RAF
  19. i like the carvings. i would like to know how they play and sound tho. the designs are really evil looking. i like them. he does good work. -RAF
  20. i think this would definitely be a field that the us would have to start looking into. seeing as how the supply of the worlds trees is dwindling and we really should leave some for the environment. i am by no means against luthiery i think it is a fantastic thing to do, but technology is in our midst and if this can eliminate a lot of the problems with wood and also help the environment then why not look into it right? -RAF
  21. what would you say is a good range to spend on a guitar. i was planning out a project and the total for the supplies is about 800 dollars. i have heard a lot of people on the forum listing prices for materials for a project at around 300(as stated above). i have heard ranges any where form 250 usd to 1300usd. is there something im not seeing? or could it be where i am looking at purchasing wood(which seems pretty steep), although now i am looking at soundcompound. but thats a bit tougher to find a dealer for. so basic q....whats a good range to spend on a project? or what would you say is an average price? -RAF
  22. i agree. the bc rich acrylics are very distasteful. i did see the guitarist for rob zombie a ffew years back with an acrylic that had a liquid inside. he flipped open a tab on the top of the guitar(i believe it was an explorer, but its been a while so i could be wrong) and he tilted the guitar up to his mouth and started to drink the liquid. very interesting flask if you ask me. and yes that would be a neat project. im not sure that its something that i would venture into tho. -RAF
  23. ya they need some more USA dealers. i definitely have an interest in this soundcompound stuff...me=environmentalist and not wanting to kill trees. -RAF
