  1. Thanks! I've been pondering the building of my own sustainer for a while now, ever since i started reading this thread extensively. To be honest the only thing that's mocking me at this point is the Fetzer-ruby, as I have, despite having built several working effects pedal, had alot of trouble with building 386-based amps. I've attempted both a Ruby and a Little Gem, both have been failures, and I'm not entirely sure why. I suppose they could have been flukes, or whatever, but I don't think that all 5 of my 386 chips are bad . . . Perhaps it's my perfing skills. . . i may order a premade PCB if i get desperate. Anyway, on the subject of the EMGs - are you saying that with the lack of loading the active pups experience, I wouldn't ned the pre/power amp circuit at all? I will end up putting one in anyway (as I will complete the sustainer project before i have the cash to blow on an EMG, and need to run the sustainer off my current passive pups), but I think it would be interesting to experiment a little. Thanks!
  2. I have a question about the sustainers - would there be any issues with trying to use active pickups? I would like to test the sustainer on my wiring guinea pig, but i would also, in the near future, be able to go from the stock pups to a single EMG in the bridge. Any foreseeable problems? Has this been tried?
  3. It looks like a Fender Performer (I believe that's the name your looking for) http://pointyguitars.com/gallery/images/co...nperformer1.jpg
  4. That has to be oen of the coolest guitars ive ever seen. I love the innovation. . .
  5. I love Franken-guitars, so this one's a winner in my book. I like it!
  6. I would imagine I wouldnt mind a zero fret. It might take some of the mellowness out of open tones, but how often to you have an entire passage (or w/e) with nothing but open strings?
  7. That Zachary guy is in a place where he has a large enough 'fanbase' to be able to select his customers though.... if you are new and currrently unknown is it likely that you will have enough customers to be so selective? I think sticking to your own guitars and having premade ones up for sale is a pretty good Idea. I don't know why, but I think I'd rather purchase a premade guitar rather than a custom Then Again i'd RATHER make my own!
  8. You may want to change all but one of the pics to links, and reduce the size of the pic you don't turn into a link. They're awefully large and theres more than one of them :| As for the bolt problem, you could try using a dab of glue but be quick about getting your pickups where you want them, unless your using something like elmers. You could also make a new pickguard.
  9. . . . I just realized that the text are pics. . . It doesn't really bother me personally, but yeah it might tick some people off. . .
  10. You must be talking about this. It seems like a really neat idea. Wonder if we'll see it entering the DIY world anytime soon...
  11. This phrase is actually still in use? Why then yes, the quilt is, in fact, OFF THE CHAIN!
  12. Very Nice I must say though, that I'm kinda disappointed that my favourite picture of the wenge guitar isn't in its gallery (the close-up of the neck/binding/fretboard that you used in the GOTM post)
  13. My first was an 81 Fender tele std Got it for $150 from a friend of a friend. So.. I guess I recommend Standard Fenders if you can get the mreal cheap
  14. That was during his Tele kick (last year?). Now it looks like hes onto V-shaped guitars
  15. Yeah I would be making the neck as close to upright specs as possible. Theres a few at my highschool that i can use for measurements and comparisons and whatnot. CF rods and such would be in the mix as well.
  16. I don't see why you couldn't use some type of metal for a nut. I was drawn in by the topic title, sorry :|
  17. The small/narrow body looks really great. One thing though: Are the holes for the controls/jack etc supposed to be lined up with the right egde of the guitar? If so they look a bit off to me...
  18. I realize that bass strings do not need to replaced nearly as often as guitar strings, however, I do not feel the strongest urge in the world to spend $100 on upright bass strings. I just don't :\ I was thinking, though, that If i could build this thing at the longest scale I can and still be able to use electric bass strings, I might could get a little bit closer to the 'feel' of an upright. It actually all depends on my friend, really. She'll be playing it more often than me :\
  19. Okay, so I'm tossing the idea of an EUB (electric upright bass) around in my head, as it seems like it would be great practice for neck building (seeing as its basically a neckthrough without wings), and I've run into a problem: Scale length. 34" is average scale for electric basses, yes? And 44" is what i've read that double basses are... I would love to build the thing with a full double bass scale, but that would require me to buy upright bass strings, which seem to cost $100 a pack So what I'm asking, is what do you think would be the longest scale length I could use and still be able to use regular electric bass strings? I cant seem to find anything
  20. You learn new things everyday I suppose. Glad I havnt started anythign yet.
  21. Holy crap that was neat. I'll have to look into a grinder :\ Anywho, the carve so far looks gret. Better than I could do, I think .
  22. Godin's guitar looks like a... *GASP* GODIN GUITAR! Dun dun dunnnn.... I didnt like the shape at first either but it grew on me alot. And come on, look at that neck binding!
